I have tried this game two times, to be honest I get totally lost in it. definitely not a newbee friendly game, however I got the idea on the training thing, time = skills, which really was and has been boring for me. Done mining and pirate hunting, but alas it all seems the same after 2 weeks of play, so then I would wait a bit, come back train some more then log off for a week and do that again, needless to say I wasn't paying for fun, I was paying for levels...So to my question/s

1. is it me or are there other ways to gain skills faster then time played = skills? I did some mission in the start, then my mission guy ran out of missions i guess.

2. Corps, needless to say , finding a viable corp that isn't a single guy saying "yeah, we got tons of people" finding out it is only 4 guys starting new from a sold account, hasn't been to fun finding a viable guild/outfit/company to join, any suggestions?

3. pvp, I hear the stories, I read them on the forums, the galaxy is so big, were do you find this action? when are you even viable to participate and live 10 secs without dying? inquiring minds want to know :)

4. stating out your character, one guy tells me , "oh you want a and b if you want c" another guy tells me "oh you want e and f if you want c" is there any site out there with skill listing? say I want to end up flying escorts (mid size capital ship types) would this site help me figure that out?

5. Star systems, were is the overall map? is it color coded? can we tell were we should go? most of the time in "missions" only it say go to this place and that place happens to be 10 jumps away, which of course = almost 30 min of game play, I find this ridiculous for the pay out you get. Am I wrong to think this is a way to yet add more time sink into the game?

Summary

From what I gather (not to insult anyone or the game for that matter, I think it would rock if I could actually figure the thing out) so far from what all I know of the game , total time played 2 months. Travel is time sink, skills are time sinks, so how does one ever get anywhere in this game without actually getting bored in two weeks like I have 2 times now? again this is not a "this game sucks" post, this is a serious question, I want to like this game, I was a huge fan of many space titles in the past such as Wing Commander series etc, but I am totally lost in this title and feel its purely a time sink for the first year it seems. Is it just that way? or am I missing some major part of this game?

Thnx for the responses ahead of time.

train learning skills to improve skill training time

    check forums for coporations recriuting

corporation forums on eve-online have a map showing where most of the fighting happens

    1. Don't do courier missions. Find an agent who hands out combat missions (Navy and the military arms of corporations tend to have these.) Also, agents with higher quality will make you travel less. If you don't have access to higher quality combat agents, do missions for lower quality agents to gain enough rank to do the higher quality agents in a corporation. A feature that is never quite explained is that if you open the info tab on a star base you can then click on the info tab of the corp that owns the starbase. Once you do that you can go to the agens section and it will list all agents available from the corporation grouped by quality, level, and section. So if you open, say, the Wyrkomi corporations information, you can then find a high quality personal agent to do missions for.

    2. Open the Map tab on the left side of the screen to see the entire Eve galaxy. There are many filters you can apply to the map, as well. Like pod deads in the last 24 hours to see which systems are dangerious.

    3. Try posting your resume on the recruitment forum at www.Eve-online.com.

    4. Skills can be trained faster by having higher stats. Stats can be improved through implants and "learning" skills. However, keep in mind that you are learning the skills passively. Would you rather farm mobs for all of your skill points?

    5. Do what you want with your character. Electronics/Engineering/Mechanic/Navigation skills tend to improve your ship. Spaceship Command skills improve your ability to pilot vessels and increases the number of vessels you can pilot. Missile and Gunnery skills improve your combat capabilities with weapons. Etc. Pick what you want to do and stick with it.

I have been playing for two months now and run level 3 agent missions. I am trying to apply to Evotech which is an industrial/research based guild that is moving to O.O space which will supply me with plenty of PvP action. The main thing to remember is that EvE isn't supposed to be the one thing you do in life. It's not supposed to be a game you have to devout all of your time to to be good. It's meant to be a game for people with otherwise full lives who have an hour or two a day to fill in. If you want a game that's a giant grind, there are games like that available to you, but honestly, you don't need to power game to acheive success in EvE.

    Thnx for the info guys...

Don't want to pwr level, just like to keep busy and feel like I am accomplishing something, I think you said what I needed to hear in that part. Not that I want or am looking for a power level, but this game relys on time = skills earnings. Just not my cup of tea, thought I might have missed something, but I guess not.

Thnx again for the replies, it helped make my mind up on the whole thing, GL with EVE and hope it stays for years to come, it obviously has a healthy following.

EVE is not for those people who want to rush to the End Game (There is No Endgame that I am aware of).

EVE is NOT for those persons who want to be Pampered, Not Gonna happen. You loose your uninsured ship (You can insure your current ship, for a fee), you get a small monetary compensation that will not cover your ship (Weapons, Cargo and Modules cannot be insured)

All that said, I admit, in the beginning, I felt as you did. I had that "Little Fish in a BIG Pond" feeling. It took me a while to understand, that the game is what I made of it. Now, after 2 years plus, I have 2 pretty decent Characters, mostly Industrial Aligned, but neither are push overs.

As for it being a Time Sink, I find this helps me, as I travel a LOT with my work and playing several hours per day is not an option. When I leave out on a Trip, I just set a Long Period Skill. When I get home, I swap to short period ones while I play. (Yes you can Swap skill training and Not loose any points!)

At present, there are over 18,000 players in the same Virtual World, and there are many Chat Channels that can offer new players help.

Didn't see anyone mention this, but if you are interested in corporations to join, do a check on them.  Open the people and places tab commonly on the left.  there is a search bar at the top, change it to search for "corporation"  or "ticker" of you only know the abbreviated name of the corp.  Type in the corporation name, when the correct one appears, right click and hit "show info."  Here you can view corporation statistics, like if they are in an alliance, how many members they have, if they have a tax rate, or what their general standings are to other corporations.

So you know, you can do this on NPC corps to search for agents in your area as well.  Hope that helps.

Well no. Your mindset is that fun=levels.

    Eve doesn't have levels.

You train basic skills in minutes, and can use those skills right away, actually mastering those skills can take days weeks or even months.

So if you are waiting for Mining 5, Astrogeo5, Industry5, MiningBarge5, and all the support skills to level 5 before you mine, it will take you 4 or 5 months before you start mining.

    It's the same with combat.

If you are expecting to start fighting in BS with cruise5, its gonna take you like 9 months to be a top notch battleship captain.

But if you start small, you can be participating in battles against other players inside of 2 weeks.

People from other MMO's come to Eve all the time, they only know time=level so they play for 2 hours and are disappointed that they didn't get level 2 or 3 or 4, thats not how it works here, there's no levels, there is only constant learning to specialize in whatever your character specializes in. Having fun starts from day 1, but you will start with very rudimentary abilities, and can quickly expand them in hours, but once you learn the basics, mastery takes an insanely long time.

For example level 4 of any skill takes %15 of level 5 of the same skill, for %80 of the benefit.

So you get %80 of the skill's benefit in %15 of the time if you just train stuff to level 4 instead of level 5, this will allow you to get into the game and be competative very quickly, while the long time players are spending 60 days to specialize in 1 type of gun, you'll be getting gunnery to level 4 in about 1.5 days.

Eve is basically a game of percentages, if you simply consider the time/benefit of what you are investing training time in, you can quickly compete with the big boys in very short order, and have your fun without worrying about grinding.

If you feel like sitting in base and chit chatting you can do that, and it still trains. Or if you're doing work and can't play, its still training.

I don't believe it, You defined Eve's training and logic system in one post, less then 750 words even. ::::08::

GREAT, great work. And hope to see you ingame. Man you did good. real good. masterly good. Damnit, Inhumanly good ::::31::
