I hate, and I mean HATE butter on sandwiches.

Point being, in all things, not everyone has the same preferences or expectations. Your metaphor served to prove the other person's point rather than your own because of this.

I like the game, but after forking out close to AUD$90 for the game, and then another AUD$15 a month for the sub, and not having the time to actually play the game constantly - I just can't justify to myself to get TESO. Some of us have work, other interest, families, etc and whilst people like myself love our gaming, watching a game tick away at your wallet when you can't play it has the head over-ruling the heart.

Which is a shame as I really enjoyed my time in the game.

Just a pity about the expensive monthly sub. :(

Normally I refrain from making posts on forums, more so because trolls smell bad and trolls are attracted to public forums. This review is spot on, nothing, and I do mean NOTHING in TESO can be over looked. Ill use an old carpenter's saying "measure it twice, cut it once" to sum up TESO. No MMO I have ever played (EQ 1 & 2, DAoC, AC 1 & 2, AO, SWG, LOTRO, VG, SWTOR and RoM) had so much stuff to do, explore and just had a flat out interactive environment. I have spent a great deal of time testing and playing MMOs since 99, and before that MUD's, not really an MMO fore say, but thats sorta where it all started. You never know what you going to find behind that rock face, or in the barrel or at the bottom of river/lake (just watch for those pesky piranha)

So many things that cannot be said because of the NDA. But same thing I always say to people that complain about playing any game, DO FKN PLAY IT. Complaining solves two things, jack and shit. Cant afford it, dont buy it. Most of the people who complain about P2P is because mama paid for them to play WoW for 6+ years so they're gaming has always been F2P to them.

Investing money into something you truly enjoy is a sound investment. I enjoy taking my truck out mudding and trail riding, and often break stuff. I cuss like a drunk sailor when it happens yeah, but i dont complain about what it cost me to fix it cause its something i enjoy doing. If it only costed me $15 a month to endlessly go beat the hell out of my truck i doubt i would find the time for gaming.

And for the guy that expects butter in his sandwich...eew, i would kill a mofo for putting butter on anything that wasnt toast with my breakfast. just sayin man, i like butter (real butter, not that yellow colored plastic) and i like sandwiches but aint no reason to mix em lol.

There are pros and cons for games to charge a sub or not, and no game worth spit started out F2P. If you want content added, bugs fixed, servers to stay online or CSR's that actually care then it costs money and tons of it. Sure they could just add in a cash shop and be like any other "F2P" platforms. Essentially free to play isnt the correct terminology as on average players spend $25-$60 a month just buying vanity BS from cash shops. When EQ launched it started at $9.99, then $12.99 then landed at $14.99 a month, plus $50 an expansion which they promptly pushed out every six months for over 7 years then went to 1 every year, and yes they are still pushing out content after 15 years lol. my point in that is a solid game will keep a solid base of players and a solid income to keep producing more content.

    Hey Mr Bitton,

Great piece of writing and a spot on review.  You pretty much summed up the game for me which I couldn't do myself due to the NDA monster.

I've taken a week off work to enjoy pre-order head start into release.  Gonna stock up the fridge with food n beer and live in my jims jams n slippers for 7 delicious days !!!

About 6 weeks to go, yipeeeeeee

P.s. Roll on next beta - Gonna try a couple of other class/weap/armour combo's and explore/craft more.

The problem is you can't go into this game thinking it's a true ES game or go into it thinking it's a themepark MMO.  It's a combination of both.  I think it leans a little more to the ES side, but that isn't enough for some ES fans.  If you go in with an open mind you may just be surprised.

A game going in as F2P right off the bat tells me they don't have enough confidence in their product to think anyone would actually pay money to play it or for anything length of time.  If this was anything but, P2P I wouldn't be playing it.  Even if it were B2P I wouldn't do it.  I want the devs of the game i play to concentrate on content, bug fixes, and improvements for my money, not on more items to put in the cash shop or ways to tweak the game so your roped into paying more.

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

i have noticed a lot more positive comments about this game after this last beta test. before this past weekend there was more hate and pointless negativity about this game. This article was spot on. if you actually take the time to smell the roses instead of trying to beat everyone to to the next quest, i feel you will enjoy this game a hell of a lot more. this is an MMO that is going to be around for years...it isnt a race to the finish and only going to be around for a month.. most of the negative rants about this game have come from people getting only to level 5 saying "this game sucks, its boring, the content is lacking, there is nothing to explore"..blah blah blah blah. Playing 1/1000 of a games content does not even begin to describe what the entire game will be like. I love this game, its a refreshing change from the standard..from the Lore, to the quest mechanics, to the story, to the graphics, the crafting, the combat, the customization. its top notch imo and cant wait till this game is released.

Breaking it down by cost/day is the wrong way to look at it. That's what people do to make an amount look as small as possible so it's easier to justify it to themselves. Tally that up over the course of the year and now you're looking at $180.

If someone was willing to give you $180 and said you could either pay for 1 year of ESO or spend it on something else, I'm willing to bet that many would have to think about it.

If I had near $200 given to me all of a sudden I'd go out and buy food and booze largely.  Some of it would go to the purchase of ESO if it were given to me on the day I was going to purchase the game anyway.  But I'm an adult, some of you are not, and how we spend our money is relative to our responsibility load.  Giving a 15 y/o $200 is an entirely different story.

In any case, 15/month is nothing.  Even at $5/hr, that's only 3 hours of work in an entire month!   If a gamer cannot afford that, they should probably either get a job or get better with their personal finances.

That's just, like, my opinion, man.

I LOLed. Unless you were being serious...

Here's some examples of things you might pay a monthly membership for, but can't/don't use all the time because of other distractions/obligations:

    • Gym membership - $15 - $40
    • Netflix - $8-$16
    • Television (cable/satellite) - $75 - $150+, depending on channels (Plus initial investment and/or monthly cost for hardware)
    • Internet - $10 - $100+ depending on speed (Plus initial investment and/or monthly cost for hardware)
    • Phone Service - $30 - $100+ (Plus an initial investment on the hardware itself)
These are typical things that you pay for access to 24/7, even though you may not have the time to use them. Many of which you had to provide an additional upfront cost in order to use. I think you that you must be joking if you think $15/mo for an entertainment service is 'expensive'.

i have a life outside of gaming, therefore i cant play this game 12 months straight. so what do i  do? I will pay as i go...Zenimax isnt holding a gun to players heads and forcing them to pay for a year. i have seen $15 a month sub fee..no where have i seen "you must pay $180 for a years subscription or you cant play the game". i can only play this game 4 months out of a year, that comes to $60, the same price for a single player game., only quadruple the content. if you can afford a single player game a year, you can afford to play this game. whining and crying about a pay model thats been around since the 90's is really pathetic. there are ways to afford anything in life  and nothing in life is free.

ya... I have to echo exactly that.  I'm actually pleasantly surprised at how much I am enjoying TESO.

I agree with the article in that it appears that a lot of ppl who are complaining about being too driven by questing need, themselves, to just STOP feeling compelled to drive themselves from one quest giver to another.  In so doing, they will find what I found.  That hours could be spent just running around, exploring, and do whatever YOU want to do.  Just because there IS content there for ppl who enjoy questing hardly means that there is any necessity to do so in this game.  I found I leveled far more from reading books, exploration, crafting and combat than I did from any questing I did.  Before I had even completed the main quest line for the first city off the starter Island in Aldmeri D, voila, I was level 13.  Finally, I got around to "finding the harborage", lol.  By that time, I had found and sold 15k worth of gear looted from chests, public dungeon mobs, etc.

So, while I will never say that any game is THE game for everyone, I find myself wishing that the beta I'm hopping into for Wildstar again tomorrow was, instead, another TESO beta phase.  I enjoy Wildstar, but I found myself far more enthusiastically playing TESO... and that was a nice thing to discover.

Too often now it's a rush to level cap then the cry of there's nothing to do is heard.

I've watched a couple of reviews where the reviewer has got to lvl 5 and based his whole game experience on rushing round killing mobs to get there. These aren't proper reviews, I probably played more than they did Friday - Monday.

This review made a lot of sense, and a lesson to some of those other reviewers. People don't take the time to go off and explore, then moan the game is on rails - go figure.

Man you completely took the words out of my mouth. I see it over and over and over again nowadays with this genre. Back in the day of EQ, AC and DAoC for example it was completely nonexistent, now all everyone does is buy the game, BLAST through the leveling portion to cap faster than you thought was even humanly possible, then whine that there's nothing to do at cap, it drives me insane. THIS IS NOT THAT GAME. From now on when I read about another person's "boring" experience to level 8 or so, I'm going to link them this article and tell them that they are flat-out playing it wrong. Every single negative review I've read I was sitting there scratching my head wondering if they were truly playing the same game as me, not only was I not even remotely close to bored, but I was plain blown away by it, and I was not expecting that to happen. The majority are expecting this game to be another built similar to WoW, so they are playing it that way, and this is so not that game it isn't even funny. But when someone has reasonable constructive criticism I'm all ears, because there is some that would really help make this game even better. I cannot wait for April.

    Yup, just another agreement...

Unfortunately, the gaming industry... heck just "reviews" in general these days are suffering from the over abundance of untrained youtubers who are unaware of how to adequately invest in, investigate, and understand something they are reviewing.  Far too many random jacks who have bought a camera to stream/youtube are given a bit too much regard as the be all end all in many products and games.

So, interestingly, we see the difference with some of the trained journalists giving a whack at reviews of TESO now with the main press gag lifted.

No game is "everyone's" game... and ofc I wouldn't tell those amateur "reviewers" on youtube or twitch they ought not to have their voice.  But ppl would do well to understand that in many cases, you're better off trying something and deciding about it for yourself than trusting the word of some person who you know nothing of other than that you like their youtube station.

    @Ninjamasteryoda

you apparently think you're making points, but you aren't.  You state, "even games on mobile and tablets offer this" remarking about ONE or TWO things the writer talks about that are clearly NOT the entire pile of things.  he was giving a couple examples, you retard.  Its not a matter of whether ESO is doing things no one has ever done before (that wasn't their goal... clearly theyre trying to at least do some things other ES games have done before... and they ARE doing it, pretty well so far) its a matter of how the big picture plays together.

Like the writer states, its all the little things.  Put together.  You, for some illogical reason, want to take them all apart and look at each specifically.  That's just poor subjectivism.

how much time have you actually spent playing the game so far yourself?

If you truly are a die hard ESO fan, I find it hard to understand what you have personally found to dislike in playing the game.

Or maybe you haven't played the game yet... you're just one of those crackpots listening to other ppl whine and have decided you WON'T like the game no matter what.

If that's the case, stfu and move on.  You made no point with your post.  Things ESO is doing every other MMO is dong?  I'm sorry, you clearly haven't played the game yet, then, lol.

I'm not arguing that $15 is expensive, I just hate seeing people trivialize the amount and dismiss it. When you start adding up everything else that we  pay a monthly fee for (as in your example), it adds up! It's not as trivial as just $0.50 a day. When you add that up over the course of a year it's a chunk of money that could go towards a lot of other things.

I agree that the game has some nice touches to it that can be easily missed in the mad rush to burn through the content and reach level cap.

Edit for NDA violation.  I'll say that in my opinion the game looks good on paper but will need some work along the way.  That said, there isn't an MMO on the planet that doesn't need and receive work/changes so we'll see what happens. :P

    And that's exactly it.

I can't imagine we spend 5 hours per day at the gym and yet we pay upwards to $70+ and more for some gyms. On a good week I go 3 times for about 1.5 hours. I think some would argue that if I'm not going every day for many hours per day then I'm wasting money. I pay about $57 per month for my phone and I might use it a few times per week if that.

The idea of "I pay x per month and therefore must go as often as possible doesn't seem the way to think about it". What seems more appropriate is that I pay x per month so I can have the convenience of going whenever I want and for as long as I want.

And as was mentioned, if someone makes $5 per hour that's 3+ hours work (however the taxes figure into that).

I can understand someone having very limited time and perhaps game companies should have alternate subscriptions that are like $5 per month for less access time because they don't need it.

I just don't see how companies are going to fund these games with "new hats" and xp boosts for the small group of people willing to pay for such things.

I'm still waiting to see more. As it stands I don't really feel the game has much to offer aside from pretty scenic landscapes. If a game could succeed on just looks alone TESO would be an instance success. We'll see if they make the gameplay and exploration elements up to par with the beautiful world they're giving us.

have you tried the beta?? the crafting, the lore, the quest mechanics, the customization, I like the combat, the exploration, and total game play were all top notch. I wouldnt go off  video's or screen shots, they dont do this game justice. you have to to play the game yourself to get the scope of this game. Dont listen to anyone either, not even me, play the game (more than to just lvl 5) and form your own opinion. I was one of the most cynical about this game, i gave it zero chance to succeed. Until i played the last 2 beta's. i have done a complete 180. love the game and cant wait till launch day.

This game really caters to the immersive player. I think the grinders are going to move on but the role players and immersive gamers will find a really enjoyable experience. Even the leveling curve felt slow enough to not feel pointless but fast enough to not be a grind.
