Everybody is making a big deal of how to choose your powers. They say if you choose wrong your character is weak. I'm going to make a blaster and so I'm wondering what powers to give it.
To a large extent that really depends what you want from your Blaster.
The Fire and Assault rifles primaries provide good Area of Effect damage, Energy Blast has Knockback as a secondary effect proving you some protection from melee but making your character poor at teaming with scrappers, tanks or anyone with kinetics powers. Ice allows you to feel a little like a controller, with it slowing effect.
On the individual power front there are very few must haves. If you intend to use your Blaster in PvP I would strongly recommend tactics. If you don't like downtime then the fitness power pool is very useful.
You will also want to ensure you get your travel power ASAP (ie. at level 14). This means that somewhere between 6 and 12 you need to buy a first or second tier power from one of the four travel power pools.
For a Blaster: Flight - Is nice since it lets you stay out of melee range, but it is the slowest travel power. Get Hover at level 6,8,10 or 12 and then get flight at 14. Air Superiority (the second tier power) isn't that useful for Blasters, although it can be used to get flying mobs into range of you scrapper and tank buddies.
Superspeed - provides no verticle component, so you will need to learn your way around at ground level. It is however the second fastest travel power. If you want flight take hasten at level 6,8,10 or 12 and then get flight at 14. Flurry is a melee attack, and not a particularly good one at that.
Teleport - As a Blaster you dont really need Teleport Foe to pull mobs, so Recall friend is a much better low level choice. Get Recall Friend at level 6,8,10 or 12 and then get Teleport at 14. Teleport is a real endurance hog, so you will need to slot Teleport with End Reduction enhancements when you can. Its also the hardest travel power to use, and unless you buy Hover as well you may find that any lag results in you dropping out of the sky. Teleport is a love it or hate it power. Personally I love it.
Also, the default keys are terrible for TP, so use this bind: /bind lshift+lbutton "powexec_name Teleport"
Superjump - I honestly wouldn't recommend SuperJump to a Blaster for a number of reasons. Its probably the most dangerous travel power since it doesn't keep you at height like TP or Flight and doesn't have a stealth component like Superspeed. It can actually do small ammounts of damage to you, which is a pain for Blasters (the frailest of the ATs), and neither of the lower Tier powes actually aid blasters much.
Powers you really want to strongly consider: Hasten (even if you don't want Superspeed), Stamina, Tactics.
Finally, as a Blaster you will eed to end fights fast - you just aren't tough enough to last a long time in fights. Pick you strongest attacks and 5 slot them (2 accuracy, 3 damage). Look for the powers that increase the damage of your other attacks - most Blaster Primaries have a Build-Up power or equivelent and finally plan the character out before you strat playing it - Sherk Silver's Character Builder is great for this and can be found here: http://home.comcast.net/~SherkSilver/index.html
