Elder Scrolls Online's Golden Feature

NomadMorlockNomadMorlock Member UncommonPosts: 815

Is it just the Theory Crafter in me that sees all the possibilities behind their use of Skill Lines?

Player's have access to skill lines for Race, Class, Armor, Weapons, NPC Guilds, PvP, and other World lines you may encounter such as Vampire, Warewolf, etc.

For game development over time it is so easy to introduce a new weapon, a new class, a new NPC guild which could bring new skill lines into the game which will cause you to want to re-design your character and how you play.  In addition, when you consider that each skill in a skill line branches (can be morphed) in two different ways (if you choose) the possibilities are far greater than what most MMO's offer in the ability to "play your class as you choose".

I do see there danger here of balance, but have to applaud this as my #1 feature in the game and what set's it apart from most every MMO I've played in the last 10 years.

Yeah I can see it being interesting in the future if they added a new weapon line such as Spears with their own crafting styles. I think that is for sure how they will handle armours after seeing the daedric, reach and ancient elven styles.

Its pretty much confirmed we'd get the Dark Brotherhood skill tree and who knows what they might come up with in the future. You dont have to worry so much about "oh man my class never gets any improvements" since the new stuff will be usable by everyone.

Yes the skill system is for sure the 'golden feature" and IMO to a lesser point so is the 50+ and 50++ content.  There are well over 250 skills in the game,  thats where the limited skill bar comes into play so masterfully.

Yes, with both the Dark Brotherhood (Assassin's Guild) and Thieves Guild going in after launch I'm going to have to think carefully how many skill points I want to spend on my Night Blade and If I want to hold any in reserve.

You wont need to, eventually you will be able to have 200+ skill points to use.

Actually (as I understand it), there are not enough skill points in game to have all skills (even more so if you invest in several crafting professions) to unlock everything at launch.  More skill points will be added with future content, but also more skills.  I doubt you will ever be able to unlock everything.

This is a good thing if you ask me. If we were able to unlock EVERYTHING, choices wouldn't matter as you'd eventually be able to do everything. I prefer to have limited skill points so I can choose to focus on tank skills/healing skills/etc. even invest heavily into every crafting skill to be a master crafter, but be a little more limited in combat.

I agree.  In fact this may be the first game in a long time where I roll an alt to try a different playstyle.  I think making those choices with your character should matter.

You understand it very wrong then, also the devs have said otherwise them self as well. Its has already been estimated( low ball estimate) at about 250 skill points which should be  enough to get all skills and max  about 2 play style/builds.

50 levels of skill points also the 50+ content then thhe 50++ content, also all the quests that give skill, all the pvp/pve things that give skills, that  huge number of skyshards  and much much more.

the stratagy isnt going to be limited skill points,  its going to be about what skill you put to use and how you synergize the mwith you group/raid

i would really like to see a game that lets me use a shield and spear combo.

F2P may be the way of the future, but ya know they dont make them like they used toimage

I would love to see a few other random skill lines like the ones from NPC guilds, but faction based.  Where if you have one, the other faction isn't available to you..

Could be possible that the morphed skills could be morphed further in the future. The morphed skills are levlin up anyways.

It might not be a bad idea to hold on to some skill points. They are adding new skills and if they don't add skill points to go with it, you might not be able to get those skills.

Makes you kind of wonder why they have 4 classes and 8 character slots doesn't it ? I'm going to go out on a limb and say there are more skills to buy than any one player can collect

Downside is that only class abilities is what sets you apart. And if class abilities only represent 10% or 20% (which I'm only guessing) of potential abilities that's not so much of a good thing. At least that's how I think of it now.

So TESOs #1 golden feature, is a design used in almost every MMORPG over the last 10 years.

No. They would have had a golden feature if they actually used the TES design of no skill lines of anyone can use any skill in the game as long as they work on raising the base skills. Instead, its just another MMO with classes and skill trees. More choices doesn remove the fact its still a limited class system.

Na they have said the opposite, so far  there looks to be around 300 skills in game, and its has already been estimated, in a low ball estimate  to boot, that we will have about 250ish or more skill points,  and we know NO one will use every skill in the game, so you will be able to max your character pretty well, not just in one build or play style but 2-3  maybe .

No. When 1 class can use any weapon type and any armor type (basically any weapon or armor in the game/no restrictions) this has not been done in every MMO. It has been done in some, but now even the majority. On top of that your character scales based on how much of said armor type etc you're using. All of these are good ideas/good twists to the cookie cutter skill set strategy seen in most mmos over the past 8 years.

You get the benefits of all the passives in each skill like right, if you are using what they need like the armors. Say for instance if I dont have any fighters guild skills in my hotbar, i know I wont get exp for that skill line, but will I still get the passives??

I also think they should have branched out more with the weapons like 2-h weapon > 2-h sword > 2-h axe etc.

ignore him as he continues to spread misinformation.  OP, I agree that this is up there with one of the distinctive features and that is why you see so many threads on some many forums about how people are excited with the almost endless possibilities of what they are looking to create. This and being able to explore to find things to do unlike most themeparks is the top two PVE reason in my eyes....at least when you get beyond the starter areas.

The only thing severely lacking in my eyes is the little side things to do besides crafting for the RPG crowd, like playing instruments in LOTRO. Hopefully they will get added down the line along with those who want Player Housing (which they said will happen I believe).

I recently watched a great video of why someone lost interest in a MMORPG because of the lack of enforced roles.  Everyone just Zergged during big raids and PvP.

I think that ESO should allow for different skills--- HOWEVER  skill combinations, weapon choice etc. should lock in 'Roles' during encounters/combat events etc.  For example:

A healing staff should mean I can't do big time damage.... but I can heal!

Heavy Armor should mean I can NOT move fast or possibly...hide....

Ranged weapons should mean I have difficulty in up close PvP....

    etc... etc....

I think perhaps you have played the forum wars a bit to much ....if there are 300 skills and  you can only get 250 skill points no one character will be able to have every skill available for his class , I think we said the very same thing but for some reason you felt the need to tell me I was wrong

You are fighting with yourself ,,,,,if you use a healing staff you are healing ....heavy armor is slower than medium and uses more stamina ....daggers are faster than swords , etc etc

No. It still has classes with their own separate skills and access to some trees specific to those classes and thus is exactly what I said it was. Giving more trees (from different weapons) is just more of the same as offered in other MMOs.

If one MMO offers you a carrot, and another MMO offers you a carrot and a chopped carrot, its only offering you MORE of the same. It would have been special if it was without classes all together allowing everyone to use every skill if they worked on it.

    Deal with that reality.
