Guild Wars isnt a true Massive Multiplayer Online 'Role Playing' Game, its more of a Massive Multiplayer Online 'People vs People' + 'Guild vs Guild' Game.
The role playing part of Guild Wars (in my view) is only there to unlock more advanced Skills/Gears/Items (the PvP char you make doesnt have access to all skills/gears untill they are unlocked), and allow players to make their own guild/cape or just have fun doing the story.
However people do enjoy the role playing part and hence the game can me called a partial-MMORPG though not a true one.
I do have 1 warning to all would be GW players though (this is my own opinion so please do not get easily influenced by the following statement) I recommend that you DO NOT play this game like 14+ hours a day for 7 days in a row, it can get pretty tiresome and frustrating fast. So savour the moment and play the game in a manner that doesnt quickly bore you.

It's not a true mmorpg imo because everything is instanced and everyone looks the same.
Can you please explain what you mean by instanced. I am not familiar with the term.
Man im starting to think mmos are too addicting to be fun because time to time i get a reality check i recently quit wow.
Instancing is when a copy of zone is created. ArenaNet claim that they reduce 70% server load by using efficient instancing algorithms. You create your own unique instance as you travel or do missions. Even the districts themselves are instanced. European district 1, district 2, etc. There is no part of Guild Wars which is persistent.
That's why I like it... no annoying grinding or neverendin travel thrugh the world.
Big deal. In most games people look pretty much the same anyway. WoW does it too. I've never felt unique playing that either. But I don't see nearly as many people complaining there about it.
Well. If you used the search bar, or actually just bothered casting your eyes on the other posts, you would see that about EVERY GODDAMN THREAD is about GW not being an mmo, because this and because that. Css is not an RTS either? Guild Wars is an CORPG AS EVERYBODY KNOWS!
Further more, MMO(PvP+GvG) Most people agree on that it's not mmo, but an RPG. And how can thing be partial? Then pretty much EVERY SINGLE mmo out there wouldn't be a RPG. Think about it. You think that WoW players slay all the creatures in WoW because they really want to help that NPC, or because they are interested in the story? Heck no, they want xp, they want gold, and they want loot. The end. That goes for about every single MMO out there. Guild Wars is actually one of the only games where you take an active part of the story, so if Guild Wars is anything, it's a RPG.

This has been discussed and hashed out for like 2 years or more, since the game first was played by everyone at e34e. The game designers themselves don't claim it an mmorpg so thats all you need. i can't believe people still want to discuss this. Say it with me now CORPG. Don't get off on wether its a role play game either, a role play game can be any thing, whether you role play is up to you. A fps can be role played if you want to.
lol did you *just* find out GW isn't a MMORPG?
it's even on the freakin GW official site! go under Game FAQ and you'll see the FAQ on whether or not GW is a MMORPG, they claim that instead of calling it a MMORPG, they call it CORPG (Competitive Online Role-Playing Game)
http://www.guildwars.com/faq/default.html
You talk as if not being an MMORPG automaticly makes the game not worth playing or something, but there are many gamers in this world that wants a PvP BASED game, GW is the first.
This is also why those WoW vs GW threads are so useless, becuase both games focus on different elements of an RPG, GW focus on PvP, WoW focus on PvE.
I agree that there is alot about Guild Wars that is untraditional. But that is what makes it so unique and refreshing. I mainly like hte fact that when you want to find a mob to kill, you can. It would be nice to be in a bigger guild seeing as how very few people are on in my guild at any given time, but that is my only complaint about GW, adn that is my own fault.. Just my 2 cents worth.
Does your guild have a website yet? Find out how easy it is to get one.
dude have a sook..
guild wars has mmorpg concepts in it so shush
Who cares if GW doesn't focus on PvE,the story in my opinion is the main point of any RPG game and most MMORPGs don't have a storyline to back up the game making it virtually pointless.
At least in the PvE of GW it's hard to gain cash and when you create a guild and get a guild hall you've actually done something in the game. Not to mention just seeing some of the cities/outposts in the game can be entertaining. PvP may be the main point of the game, but PvE will be the most entertaining part of the game for RPGers.
"The one who begins with nothing, gains everything slowly."
I've played the game since release with over 1000 hours logged on 6 different characters and 99% of that has been in PvE content and the other 1% in PvP. What makes GW so great is not only is PvE fun and repeatable, without having to endlessly grind levels and just killing things over and over for meaningless quests, is that you can enojoy both PvE and PvP and you don't have to grind to compete in PvP and also can do one or both as much as you want and don't have to touch the other if you don't want to. Initially though if you were to just PvP only you may want to play a PvE character to get the ball rolling on unlocking stuff for PvP and then unlock the rest with the points you earn from PvP play. However I don't know anyone that didn't enjoy the PvE unlocking process for most of the stuff. I do think there were a few frustrated when you couldn't unlock stuff through PvP play but now that you can I think even those that play PvP most of the time are statisfied. PvE is definately much more than just unlocking for PvP.
i agree, guild wars is a great game, and is loads of fun, but it doesnt satisfy my need for a good mmorpg. its just not exactly very social.
i'm also gettting way to tired of reading threads as this one
always the same bla bla bleh bleh
someone trying to convince the others (which already knew from the beginning its not) that guild wars is not a real & true mmorpg
i'm sorry dude but in my oppinion you took very long to even realize what we already knew by just listening to what arenanet tells us aabout the game they made
if they create a game telling people its a corpg then what the hell are you doing here assuming it even would be an mmorpg. maybe you just heard from a friend, which is exacly like you: thinking he got it right & flaming away on every forum because he is sure of it that he alone has that oppininon & no one else would have posted something lilke that before
think again 1000's of this threads are out here & other forums, & those are ALL RIGHT, of course its not an mmorpg, because it never was meant to be one!
I wouldnt call Guild Wars a success. Sure its done moderately well... but consider most people play for a few weeks "hardcore" then quit. Myself I had maxed characters and had enough of their pvp by day ten.
Bottom line? It plays like a single player game /yawn.....once you finish the content..well then its "game over". (unless your into farming for items that wont matter) The main problem is it "walks" the middle ground sporting boring meaningless PVE and PVP that wont keep you interested long.
If Guild Wars had a monthly fee it would have been a flop in the US. Sooo success isnt the word id use to describe.
its not because you don't like it that everyone doesn't!
i personaly find pvE & pvp both very good, i never had feeling that the game runs like single player cus i always search good parties ... & i'm lot of the time in cities selling things, buyig things, chatting...
but then again, you say pvp is booring i'm sorry but i believe i hear many others tell its the best pvp in an mmo so far, so basicly i cant get you any proof of how many players are on my side & you cant bring any of how many players find the game booring (people who actually bought & played it to make up their mind, not just ur mother that thinks any game is booring!)
so this would be a discussion without an end,
but the fact that there are so many copies sold, & that they keep bringing a big expantion
+ a release in new asian countries + ....
all this shows us that the game did not do just a moderate job but was in fact a big succes
eventhough you cant measure up to wow it still is a big succes
