For the one of a kind gameplay. I eventually got to a point when playing the uber graphic games that I realized that most of them just didn't have much depth. This is where UO exceeds most (if not all) games; there's always something to do.
They're easily SNES, if not N64 quality. You're just a superficial idiot.
----------------------------- Listen Asmodeeus, seven years ago, Ultima Online didn't even have those pathetic "quests" that you refer to or those "professions" of ninja, samurai, necromancer, and paladin. Nor did it have any of the neon crap, or bug mounts. It didn't even have any "combat moves." You turned on attack and jousted with simplistic swings. It was a better game then. if you can't guess why then just uninstall the thing and move along. - Crabby
UO is a very good funfactor game it never gets old ever sure you may leave for a while or take a month long break from it but you always come back look at ebay you see the accounts still selling like crazy and they are pricey also but people buy them
UO Pwns, All ther is to it, i went from Diablo2 to UO, to EQoA, to FFXI, TO EQoA (for a month or so each) THen back to UO for a year and 1/2. I finaly quit just cause i wanted to play a different game and i sold my account on Ebay fo 325$ and i sold money from the game for 350$ in june. Now i'm playing Lineage2 which is a really cool game
As the people above have stated... people play UO for the gameplay. Most new MMOS comming out are pretty similar in the way that you grind levels, do quests, go on raids, maybe pvp. In UO you can do whatever you want: learn any skill at any time, build a house, run a shop, run a dungeon, explore, sail a ship, etc. Currently, you won't find gameplay as wide-open as UO is.
The graphics are dated because the game is over 10 years old now (if you count development stage). It was released in 1997 for god's sake.
For game play there isn't a game on the market of the quality that UO is. For graphics it leaves a lot to be desired. If graphics are the only reason you play an MMORPG then don't bother with UO. It's old, and it's engine can't handle newer graphics.
I still wish someone would take the entire UO skill/play system and port it over to a modern graphics engine with high quality graphics.

Actually, I just want upgraded 2D graphics. Maybe like Diablo2 + the UO System. These high end graphics games cause lag, keep people with slower connections from being effective and if there is a huge battle, forget about it. These guys have it wrong. Less graphics and more gameplay. Man i wish i could make a game UO2. And I'd blow all these idiots out of the water.

I to would play that game, especially the Pre AOS version of it. Imagine 1997-99 UO gameplay with lineage 2 or equivalant graphics
Yeah game graphics for UO are a little outdated but for me still hold an "old school" feel that is cool. UO is still a great game because of its depth and community. Hell if paying players based the game off of the generic SNES type graphics, then the game would folded after Everquest and SWG entered the market.i look at games like SWG and City of Villans and they were great visually but lacked depth and without depth there is just no point in playing them. Basically it just comes down to what a player wants out of a game. i would never recommend UO to someone who wants instant gratification (SWG-NGE-jedi) and graphics. UO has proven to all MMORPGS that graphics do not mean sh*t unless you have a great game to back it up.
Arnott Nostromo - SWG/MBH dead because of SOE's NGE
Kreeping Death - City of Villians and is canceled due to a horrid lack of depth
Padan Fain - UO/TH still going strong (old habits are hard to break)
UO has a great setup I feel but while graphics aren't the most important thing for me but something seriously needs to be done with the graphics. My sistem is the following 2ghz, 1gig of ram, 256 mb graphics card and a broadband connection. The amount of lag, poor frame rates, etc is insane. This is with the 3D client and things are only a slightly better with the 2D client.
For all the great things UO has and it does do a lot of things good, it's graphics and engine do seriously hold it back and I feel is the main reason why many people can not simply get into the game. Clearly a lot of others do but there would and could be so many more players, people that want to play the game, if it was given a face lift. Not even full 3D like other mmorpgs. The isometric point of view UO has is part of it's charm and should be kept but seriously a new engine is greatly needed and is extremely long overdue.
Graphics aren't everything but there are times when certain upgrades are needed. With my systerm setup, hell lower specs systems should not have the problems that people get with running this game. It makes no sense with is visual look that it should run so poorly.
If it wasn't for the performance issues I wouldn't really have a problem at all with the game. Hell I still have memories of when I tried it again this past summer. Finally had gotten my own house, found a place near my then guild mansion, had my horse and was taking my Paladin to different areas and wanted to work on taming skills. These memories would have been a LOT more pleasant if I didn't have to deal with all of the performance problems.

Uhm, this was like the first MMORPG.
The graphics may be dull, but graphics aren't everything ya know?
If that was the case, MUD games wouldn't exist.
Consider this game, (UO) to be your, everything is possible game. You can be just about everything.
Neptus - FFXI - Pandemonium

Try it before you ask about old graphics, and you will understand why people play it.
