Group Questing and Leveling Question

So I am looking at getting ESO for my wife and I, but our intention was to play together throughout the entire experience.  With the phasing mechanics I hear about now and the instanced quests, how feasible is this play style? Are we going to spend a majority of our time not able to see each other due to differing phases or will this issue only be an occasional minor nuisance?  Thanks in advance for any constructive responses!

You can group up and join the same phase as the other one. I did that with a friend. We didn't group extensively, so I can't tell you how well grouping works. Perhaps this weekend.

Me and my friend grouped constantly, only had to right click and travel to each others phase at start of sessions.

The phaseing only limit what you see, you may chose to save a town and your girlfriend will burn it ( no clue if this choice is in the game, its just an example) when ever you two go there together she will see a burned town you will see the town.

During the 3 day weekend we only had trubble once and that was trying to get all party members into the same instanced dungeon, looking back on it i think it had to do with people starting the quest before everyone was inside.

According to the 50+ testers there is more grouping the higher you get.  Also skulls icons on the map between the last 2 betas, they went from "oh, this is a neat place and had a cute little objective" and in the last one was more like "OH GOD WHY WON'T YOU DIE, YOU'RE JUST A MOB!"

I think you both will just have a great experience teaming up together, as long as you join the same alliance...

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

It will be Altmeri Dominion or Daggerfall.  Not completely sure yet, but I thank you guys for the info so far!

I seem to recall elements of the story quest that you couldn't enter together, even if you where at the same stage. Is this still the case?

well unless they preorder, then any race can be any faction, so in that sense it doesnt matter if they wanna play different factioned races... they can just be turncoats.

I normally group with my wife a lot during MMOs. We had some issues trying to do some of the content together during the last beta. They key really became picking up the quests and doing them together from start to finish. If one person progresses through a step without the other it can cause issues. Likewise if you are given choices mid quest and you choose different options phasing may kick in and make it impossible for you to interact with each other. This was particularly annoying down in a cave area of a quest towards the bottom when I decided to kill an NPC and she decided to let him live. Instantly the phasing kicked in and we were invisible to each other. Fortunately we were each able to finish the quest solo. There are some quest lines/steps that are solo only; the Fighter's and Mage's guild quests come to mind. There is nothing you can do to get around the solo parts other than to share tactics.

Bottom line is yes it is very viable to play content with someone else but requires some coordination between you to avoid phasing.

The skull and cross bones mobs are no joke and some will have unique mechanics. Expect that on average you will need three or more people of the same level as the mob to kill them. I highly recommend you have a plan for where you will run away to as you figure out how to kill them.  Good luck :)

It's not a problem at all.

The way the server tech works is it attempts to group you with similar players automatically. However, by adding people as friends, joining guilds, etc. you will start to correct the server into placing you w/ more of your friends.

Furthermore, once grouped you can select to join each other's instance with the 'travel to player' option when you right click. This will place you at the nearest wayshrine within the same instance as your friend / guild mate. I've also found that while grouped, changing zones will automatically keep you guys in the same instances (though it has bugged a couple times), so you shouldn't have to consinstantly rejoin each other's instances.

As for the phasing, it's mostly minor stuff. Like picking up books & stuff that get's phased. You won't see the books you're friends pickup, and visa versa. It's primarily there to try and have a more immersive environment, where you can interact with objects, without it getting screwed up by others.

    Yes.

Main story line you have to do all by yourself.

    Thanks for the reply.

So, if a player gets stuck at a certain part of their story line does that mean they've just got to keep at it until they finally succeed or ragequit?

This was not my experience with the last beta. A friend of mine and myself played the beta, same race, different classes and played at the same rate together pretty much the entire weekend. I would claim about 30% of the time I could not see him.

I could see the little arrow where he is standing, but we could not see each other. We tried travelling to each other several times at several different points of the game and sometimes it worked, and sometimes it did not.  Unless the did some major tweaking on the phasing issues then it doesn't work worth crap.

Awesome game, very true to the ESO spirit in my opinion, art work is insanely beautiful. Leveling, weapon skills, crafting, I can all find an appeal to.

Group dynamics? Complete crap. I am a casual player, and typically well behind everyone else on levels because I don't have a ton of time to play, and when I do play I like to explore.  This alienates me in this game. In other MMOs there is an option to mentor people, or a level limit that you can group with people with in 5 levels of yourself. In some cases even choose to power level them through a quest.

This game unless you are exactly at the same place in the time frame of the phase, and made the same exact responses to all of the NPCs you will not be with each other. You will be in the same location, standing right beside eachother looking at a big white ^ symbol where your partner should be.

They will not be able to heal you, or help you fight, they will not be able to use a soul gem on you if you fail. They just can't see you, or what you are fighting.

    Broken....

    Not so nice guy!

Reading through the thread i remember having to do main story myself and the mage guild mission (forgot about that in my first post to the op, guess i was having to much fun ^_^ ) but other then that me and my friend on purpose chose diffrent to see both versions and we could still see and play with eachother. not sure what problem you and your friend had.

Oh yea and cold harbour the first areas of the game wont let you group up no matter what, wouldent take to long to get out of there tho.

  • lordtwistedlordtwisted Member UncommonPosts: 570

My main concern, is other than the OP how many people have a perfect static group that can play at the exact same time, at the exact same pace as everyone else they play with?

In my specific case, it seems that my friends tend to out level me by a few levels, then when I am on they will help me catch up to them, well that is the case in most MMO's we have played.

In the case of this mmo that will not be possible. You will not be able to go back and help a friend through a quest. Once you pass them you will not see them again until they catch up to you.
