Hi there folks.
I have been trying to find a new game to try for a while now and I thought I'd see if the fine folks on this forum would help me out. I'm going to basically describe some features of a game that I would like to play. I know this game doesn't exist, so don't bother pointing it out. All the features I list are not requirements for me to enjoy a game, but they are all features I love in games even though I know they don't all exist in one game at the moment. The more of these a game has, the better the chance I'll enjoy it. I hope you can recommend a some games I should try out based on this.
So here goes:
- No Levels or relatively meaningless levels - Sure there can be a numerical representation of some sort, but what I hate is where basically any level 20 character can kill any level 5 character with one hit. That just doesn't make any sense. Stats should not keep going up and up on a sort of ladder. There should be other, more meaningful ways to progress your character.
- No Races/Classes or relatively meaningless races/classes - Now, races and classes are not bad in and of themselves, but the great majority of games implement them badly. If the game uses races and classes basically to reinforce certain character roles (like tank, DPS, Healer) that is bad. It is an unnecessary limiting factor. If races/classes are implemented just to give different game play experiences that go deeper than just sticking characters into predefined roles but actually affect the strategy of the game in meaningful and deep ways, that's good. (hint: there are precious few games that actually do this, so no races/classes is a good rule of thumb)
- Player Skill based - Success at the game should be based on the skill of the player. That goes for combat, too. man, am I tired of games where combat is basically just pressing two or three number buttons repeatedly. "Twitch" combat is a step in the right direction. Even better would be the opportunity to use actual strategy and tactics. Any player skill required outside of combat is a plus. Boy would it be awesome to find a game where you actually have to get better at the game to progress in it and progression wasn't just a factor of how much time you had put in. (Are there still games like that or did those die out in the 90's?)
- Frequent Player Interaction - When I choose to play a massively multiplayer online game, I do it for the multiplayer aspect because single player games are so much better in every other respect. I want a game where it is a matter of course for people to have to interact with other players.
- Goal-Based PVP - Just going around fighting other people is not fun PvP. It's meaningless and stupid. Good PvP sets goals for multiple teams of players that are mutually incompatible with the other team's goals such that if one group succeeds, the others fail. Yes, there will be some fighting in order to stop the other teams from achieving their goal, but fighting is not the end in itself.
- In-World Player Housing - I would like to be able to build a house, and live in it, and pretty much build it wherever I want. I do not want my house to be some instance that's outside of the game that no one will ever see and there is positively no good reason for me to ever go there. therefore also...
- Reasons to be at my House - Not only do I want to build my own house and be able to keep building on it and improving it over time, but there should also be reasons why I actually need to be at my house during the course of playing the game. There is no point in having a house in the game when the game is played completely away from it.
- Non-Combat Elements - I want things to do besides kill things. Crafting is one thing of course, but in so many games, you just craft things to help you kill more things and crafting sucks and is not fun in most games anyway. Some things that have absolutely nothing to do with combat would be really cool. Be able to go to the pub in town and play cards against other players? Now that would be sweet.
- In-depth Character Customization - I have been known to spend more time in a game designing the look of my character than I spend actually playing the game with that character. It's fun. Enough said.
- Not Fantasy - My God am I sick of dragons and elves and trolls and orcs and- aaarrgh
OK, that was quite long, but hey. If I find a game like that, I would never leave my house. I know won't so give it your best shot. Below I will lists some games I have played and enjoyed and why:
MUD1:
First multiplayer game I ever got into.
Criteria that it meets:
1. (sort of) There are levels but all stats max out at 100 at about 10% of the way to max level. It is definitely possible for a character at the lowest level to kill a character at the highest mortal level with a little cunning.
2. No races or classes of any sort.
3. There is no way you're getting anywhere in this game without becoming good at it.
4. (in the past) This was the case when I was playing it. Lots of social interaction, cooperation and competition. It's a graveyard these days.
8. Fighting things is not the main purpose of this game at all.
APB: Reloaded:
Surprising that I enjoy this game so much because I'm not really into shooters
1. There are ranks, but they don't affect the character any. Any skilled rank 1 character can beat any unskilled max rank character.
2. No races or classes of any sort.
3. Aside from the the aiming and shooting requiring player skill, there are all kinds of opportunity for thinking up and employing tactics against the enemy.
4. Almost everyone plays in groups in this game, and there are no NPC's so all missions are against other real people.
5. Most missions have goals to be accomplished rather than just randomly killing the other team
9. The customization is top notch and you also get access to more clothing and design options as you go along so even the customization is gamified.
10. Modern city setting
City of Heroes:
This is as far from the sandbox style of games I usually like as possible but it was very fun.
4. It was always easy to find a team in this game. There were even people who did role-playing which was awesome. sadly PvP never took off, though.
7. While the bases were instanced, they were frikkin amazing. They were completely customizable for role-playing purposes as well as being able to house a number of very useful things such as crafting tables, teleporters, vault, and more.
8. I'm going to throw this in there because 1) a lot of role-play was possible because of the community, 2) I spent a whole lot of my time there not fighting things but rather designing new characters, designing a base, and writing missions in the mission creator
9. One of the best character creators made. It was the best hands-down when it was released and was only surpassed by a couple games by the time it closed down.
10. Modern city, superhero setting
A Tale in the Desert:
I played this for the trial period but didn't continue. I had a lot of fun, though. Maybe I should actually get the game.
1. No levels in the conventional sense
2. No races or classes of any sort.
3. There are lots of aspects to this game that depend on player skill
6. You pretty much do whatever you want whenever you want.
7. Lots of reasons to go to you house
8. There's no combat at all
10. Set in ancient Egypt
Ok, this post was way longer than it should be, but anyway. let the suggestions for amazing games begin!
