i always like underwater stuff in TES games it added to the exploration, dont need to hav elots of underwater combat but areas where you can explore underwater wuold be cool.
and as a long time argonian fan its kind of a let down one of our better racials is just being tossed out the window due to the design change.
F2P may be the way of the future, but ya know they dont make them like they used to Proper Grammer & spelling are extra, corrections will be LOL at.
Every time I see an argument like this, I have to laugh. It's like how the WoW community was asking for more underwater content for years, and then once they finally got an entire zone in Cata, they realized just how crappy underwater content really is.
Or look at GW2, and how many people avoid the underwater stuff there.

And this just shows you don't understand the premise of my argument? Do we need underwater zones? No. Should we be able to explore underwater indefinitely? No. But removing the option to dive underwater at all cripples the potential of the game. I didn't spend much time underwater in Elder Scrolls games, but those few instances where i'd find the entrance to a cave underwater, dive for pearls, risk drowning to explore sunken portions of a wrecked ship, actually be able to fight back against slaughterfish when they attack, find an entrance/exit to a dungeon in the water at the bottom of a lake etc.... All these little touches made the game feel more alive and I see no reason to take those little touches out of an elder scrolls game (there's no part of making it an MMO that restricts it). In fact I see the ability to dive underwater as even more important in a game with such a heavy emphasis on PvP.... No I don't think we need underwater zones (in fact I think they are silly) but taking diving out completely is crippling to the potential of the game.
It is not nostalgia but I was no magician or druid or shaman and I was not able to afford the earring so I died a lot if I was not careful. If we went to kedge keep people would be casting spells on you to keep up the underwater breathing but when you are alone you had to watch your breathing. You are talking like you always could afford the items or had people casting spells on you. Seems you have forgotten how it was to be a low level and penniless.
Underwater combat and such has always just annoyed me. I couldnt wait to end any required quests or venturing into the deeps. Sounds like a plus to me.
Curious, if this game has no "Jump" (like GW1), and OP or any other person makes a thread about it, would these very same people get on here and defend the game?
Point is, you guys missed the OPs point.
And for the record, I'm not playing TESO because of the business model, not because of any other reason.
Now that you mention it in DAoC you could jump off a horse running full gallop. In ESO why can't I jump off a horse running full gallop? I mean I didn't always do it but it was a action that brought me comfort that I could do it if I wanted....freakin ESO. But I'm still gonna buy it since: (rest of the game) > (jumping off horses)
But hopefully one day devs will get it right and make a game where I can ride a horse underwater and still jump off!

While not game breaking it's pretty sad when EQ1 has better water back in 1999. We should want more from these games and be going in the direction of ArcheAge with oceans and islands and player made boats to sail and giant sea monsters not ankle deep or surface tension water.

All of it. Fighting underwater is impractical as shit, take that shit somewhere else. I dont want it, im glad all i can do is wade in the water, i am glad that if you spend to much time in the water slaughterfish arrive to remind you that your ass doesnt belong in the water.

I already said I don't care about underwater combat. But inability to swim underwater completely is just silly to me. It's like not allowing me to jump. I don't care for GW2 either for other reasons. I actually find much bigger flaws in that game than this one.
If you don't care about it then why does your title say that you won't be buying the game just because of the lack of it?
I played LOTRO and ff11 for a combined 8 years and this never bothered me.
(though the jumping thing in ff bothered me)

Underwater content never crosses my mind, and I actually find it more of an annoyance than anything when I am pushed into it. This being the main reason for not buying it does not compute for me.
I gave the beta a try this weekend and let me tell you: I actually found that they did a lot of things right in this game. Props to the devs for all the work they put in. I'm especially impressed how successful they've been in their implementation of mass pvp. I would go into more detail of all the little things I found that were well designed in this game except I found that they took out one often ignored feature that made me decide that this is NOT a world that I want to settle in: the inability to dive underwater.
I'm sorry but this is gamebreaking for me. Do I spend a lot of time underwater in games? No. Do I care much for underwater combat? No. Do I think you should be able to hold your breath alot and swim underwater forever? No (I actually like how it works in Skyrim and Oblivion). But it's just something you "do" in virtual worlds. It's a little interaction with the world that has existed for a long time now and I see no reason to take it out (especially when your gameworld has so much water). It's just as important to me as jumping or emotes; I don't spend much time doing either of those things but take it out and the gameworld just doesn't feel "right". There's so many kinds of adventures and exploration that a player can never have now because they chose to not allow underwater swimming in any form; very disappointing.
Now before this devolves into an argument about whether or not they intend to keep diving out of the game, I just want to point out that there have been numerous forums posts about this and there has been no indication that they intend to change this. On the contrary they actually use your inability to dive and fight underwater as a wall mechanic to zones i.e. you get eaten by slaughterfish that you can't fight back against if you try to swim too far out to sea. I'm assuming for all intents and purposes that this design decision is here to stay, and I cannot abide it.
First, let me start by saying.. I agree, it was a major disappointment. Even in ES games can you swim in any lake of water.
But-
I'm fairly certain that the most ignored feature of an MMORPG has never been the ability to dive under water.
Personally, I think you should be grateful you can swim in water to begin with. It could be a lot worse, and then I could agree that it becomes more or less game breaking. They even implemented a cool feature that gives a little more character to an otherwise dead water world. If you swim out too far, you get mauled to death by slaughterfish. Hey, it could be worse, right? They could've not even done that. Also, the physics of all the varying splash effect, depending on whether you jump in at water level or higher up is pretty satisfying.. The way you fall deep into the water and swim back up if it was higher up. I'd even go so far as to say they've done a great job with the shore line.. How many games have made their shores look so basic/generic that it doesn't really resemble what we know and have witnessed at the beach? Pockets of water, patches of dry land, not just one straight line. It's really neat.
I do agree, however, that they limited their exploration by taking out the water. I don't remember morrowind much, but I think it had underwater ruins, and a fun thing was to swim out and see if you could ever find something cool. I'm not sure if I ever did, but maybe others have. It's very possible though that under water stuff just wasn't as viable or rife with interesting mystery as 'on land' would be in the ES sense.
Anyway, I get what you're saying.. and it does really suck (I think about it every time I jump into the water), but... it could be a whole lot worse, and I'm glad I can get in and splash around in the first place. So, not very immersion breaking for me. Definitely not a reason to keep me from playing, either.

Completely disagree. This is a 'realistic' type MMO and not being able to dunk your head is silly. Let alone the fact you cant use the Sprint key to swim faster above water. Truly takes away from the realism which was the goal here.

First of all OP.... nice use of paragraphs. A little light shines a little brighter in my soul when I see someone on MMORPG.com using good grammar.
Secondly, not playing this game because you can't swim underwater is sort of like not playing this game because you can't sit in chairs. It's a little bit silly to get so worked up over, isn't it? Yeah? Just a little?
