Irth Online's New Years Resolutions

Irth Online's New Years Resolutions

1.  Release a finished game.

2.  Charge a monthly fee only when the game is complete.

3.  Apologize to all players for charging money to begin with.

4.  Tell the truth in all future press releases.

5.  Promise again to never release a "half-arsed" game.  Then actually keep that promise.

6.  Stop using that phoney PR line: "we listen to the fans".  Start using: "we listen to those suckers' credit cards".

7.  Admit that the name "Irth Online" is pretty dog-gone stupid.

    LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I see that they haven't done much with their resolutions yet aside from breaking #2 already. Hard to imagine them charging $30 for an unfinished game and on top of that another $14 a month. Then again considering their own hype as well as their development history, and what they had been spoon feeding their own beta fan base ...it is not much of a shock at all.

It really amazes me how naive and gullible gamers can be.  You can go down the list and find numerous unsuccessful MMO's yet for some odd reason, they manage to win a certain fan bases loyalty with just the writing of their games description.

I was involved with Irth Alpha 1.  I logged in, viewed the graphics and engine and stopped testing it right there.  Ive tested enough alphas and betas to have learned that once they start inviting anybody who basically submits an application, the game will end up looking and feeling about the same as it has from that point on.

sure Ive tested games like WoW that made drastic changes, but I also didnt stop testing the game because it already had something in it that I liked and knew would evolve into something.  However, I tested games like Horizons, Irth and Wish and knew the game would not offer to their clients what it had said it would.

I think a lot of folks who hold on to games like Dark and Light and Irth Online and actually believe the game will make vast improvements are typically people who have only been involved in a couple of MMO's with very rare experience with any sort of testing phase.

and if you people dont think developers take advantage of hyping a game with ideas they know wont be completed by release to draw subscribers, look at Dark and Light and Mourning..and Irth.

Its good to have faith, but not when it comes to your money.  TV evangalists should teach you that...

I think you said what you had to say there Dark. It doesn't change the fact that the game is a steaming pile of crap.

Don't suppose you've played it since beta? No? Then try it, you may be surprised.

    Edited for: completeness.

    Why would I try it?

I like how the devs edit things when they don't like what players say. If anyone is still playing this they are a fool. This was the best game in the world on paper, the worst on implementation. At least Horizons isn't the bottom of the heap any more.

Ultimately it was the devs..well..a particular developer that pushed me away from the game.  She was extremely controlling over the boards and the topics people discussed.  I had words with her on more than one occassion.

then there were these ideas of theres for having a hardcore roleplaying server which seemed to draw every extreme roleplay nazi out of the woodwork.  before the server ever existed there was arguement after arguement on what people expected from other people on this roleplay server.  A bunch of hall monitors and taddle tails all grouped up onto one lovely server.. how grand!

i dont know if the hardcore server ever made it through release, but i bet thats a real fun place to be (not)

Yes, I played Irth about a month after release...well play is a strong word. It was more swearing and head shaking than anything else.

    Referring to Wish?

Well, i fear that Wish was going to end the same way Irth is.

A lot of people hold Wish up a pedestal, but in reality they made some bad turns during the development. More specifically, the god knows anybody months delay between the 1.4 & 1.5 beta ( if i remember correctly ). They stopped listening to people during that period, and made to many basic mmorpg mistakes. I mean come on? When you have a topic with a few hundreds of posts regarding Player Death System, and you have the developers ( well, one in specific ) trying to defend it. A dead system where you have a lot of people against it ( with well written & long arguments ( a lot several pages long ), and way better suggestions ). You know when they are trying to push there way true then, its going to happen on other topics. And so it did :(

I've seen it to many times. Every MMORPG has a stubborn developer who don't like to change the system because it means more work ( well deuu, if you ask people in the first place, then there was no reason to redo some systems ). And they end up arguing how they are right, and all the other people aren't. In the end most fall back to the most easy answer. Copy the market.

Wish might have turned out to something nice, i don't know what happened to them during the silent development period that lasted 6 months, but something did change on the development team. Well, we will never know. Just like the reason Wish was canned ( and even more strangely how Irth ended up buying models etc from Wish after the stop. In other words, there was a connection between both development teams ). Maybe some left during that period, and entered the Irth program, who knows ... those things are kept secret very well ..

Wish was canned because of the overhead.  I was involved with testing Wish for a very long time, being among the first phase of testers invited into the game.

One of the factors of the games release depended on a solid X number of subscribers, and I cannot remember what that number was but it was a fairly large number.  Basically, they knew the game couldnt draw that sort of interest so the game was canned.

Irth isnt the only game using parts of Wish.  They had sold a lot of the licensing to some developers in China I believe it was, who are using a lot of the technology they used.
