A question for D&D fans, which MMORPGs are you playing?

guitargamerguitargamer Member Posts: 3

I'm trying to find a game and am looking for something that people with similar tastes to mine like.  I know the obviouis choices are DDO and Neverwinter.  I'ved tried them both and they're OK.  I'm wondering if other D&D fans have found any MMORPG alternatives to those two games.  It doesn't literally have to be a D&D game, just a game that has something that reminds you of the D&D feel and that you're having fun with.

Basically, if you REALLY like D&D games (PC, console or tabletop), which MMORPGS do you also REALLY like?

    Defenetly try out :

Card Hunter. Its not MMO , but web based hybrid between card game and D&D Chainmail -

but hell its love letter to D&D if there ever was one.  Must play !

Second recommendation would be Dark Souls 2. When it comes out.

Again not MMO , but with very strong online element. Amazing RPG that truly brings all the excitement and suspense of dungeon crawling sessions.

As for MMO no MMOs except DDO are not very close.  In fact I have all but given up on MMOs. And am focusing more on alternative smaller stuff. Or just play F2P MMOs for grinding fix.

But if I would choose it would probably be everquest 2. Why ?

Plethora of classes, Many dungeon crawls. Class trinity. Quite old school , but not antique...

It has been about 2 years since I played any 3.5, but I do miss my cleric or pelor. Just sucked when I was forced to play alongside all evil aligned characters.
But I really enjoyed pre f2p lotro and loved my time in swg. Currently, only playing eve online. Looking forward to trying pathfinder online.

In this day and age, if you want anything with depth and intelligence, go back to MUDs. I did, and I haven't looked back except to see the constant reminders of mass fail clones on the horizon.

Pretty much EVE-Online, or non mmorpg games like Minecraft,Terraria,Starbound,Edge of Space, 7 days to die, Project Zomboid. But as for MMORPG EVE Online is the only game i've played in the last 10 years that i would consider worth it or going back to UO free player servers like www.uoforever.com

Should say that yes im a big pen and paper RPG player still and play a lot of Pathfinder or 3.5 D@D ruleset.

Not really playing anything at the moment. For me no mmo has ever touched D&D 2nd edition and I have truly despised the bastard versions that came out later except for 3rd which was at least tolerable with Tums. I played WoW for years on several servers where I would get max level with a couple toons then start over on different server. ESO is next on my list for as long as it lasts and I have played many of the other mmos out there. Whether through game play or the community no mmo has touched D&D for me. Even games I really enjoyed like DAoC were ruined eventually by lousy expansions and community.

There is no Demon Souls 2 or ever will be.

As a DnD player I've more or less been up in the air for a long time. I was hoping that Neverwinter would have been better, and that there was a better modding scene for Dragon Age: Origins (Really it's neverwinter nights 3) but that didn't seem to take off. At least not compared to the NWN and NWN2 modding market.

MMO wise DDO is the best bet. I don't play it anymore right now. But I enjoyed it when I did. I'm hoping that Pathfinder Online will be a good rebirth of MMO DnD, but we'll have to see.

I meant Dark Souls 2 , I always confuse those two.

    THIS!

I discovered a gem of a game 2 years ago. RP is a blast. GM events. Invasions. And playing a necromancer, the "hard mode" guild, where no place in town is safe, and you have to hide your identity or even non PVP players can sick the Hounds on you, has been one of the most unique gaming experiences I've ever had.

And that's just one of many.

ADD: Check out mudstats.com. It's a great tool to see what's available, and how many people are currently playing. But don't let a low population pull you away. One might have 20 or so people tops, but you'll get to know them very well, rather than being a handle on someone's friend list.

    I'm a MUDder. I play MUDs.

    Current: Dragonrealms

Neverwinter until ESO launch. Then still NW some, just less since ESO will get some of my time too.

Dragonrealms. Started in '96 on AOL. It's going through a glut of development thanks to some BEAST coders. New crafting systems, getting ready to push out a Magic system revamp, followed by more crafting options. The newbie experience is pretty bad, so try and find someone that will help field questions.

Other options: 3kingdoms/3scapes will always have a spot in my heart. I played them for around 12 years, since high school, and nothing beats a game designed around just killing things. RetroMUD offers some great party style big mob loot collecting, though currently it's a little unstable, but it's been getting a lot of development love. I hear good things about the IRE suite of games, but I found DR to be a superior product.

Alas, I've yet to find an mmo that truly reminds me of (or has the feel of) D&D. I'm still looking.

I played D&D in the 80's and 90's and my take on this is that the pen and paper games have very little in common with Mmo's other than they based on some sort of progression of stats and the acquisition of new gear.

Gone is the creative aspect for the GM's as well as the ingenuity of the players facing different situations.

    Matter of perspective I guess.

Pretty much this. No MMO can truly capture the feel of a D&D paper campaign.... particularly one run by a good DM. Like some one here said, pre F2P LOTRO cam close as any MMO I've played has been able to. I think Shadowbane was as close as I've ever come to D&D in an MMO.

I started D&D in 2006 or so (pen and paper), completely fell in love with it. But! After having this fourth edition crap come out, I lost faith in the product. I mean, there's no hope for it, in my eyes. - Luckily, there's the Pathfinder and eVen a Witcher RPG coming out.

As for MMOs, I play everything what is more of an RPG than an MMO. Examples: I love DDO and Guild Wars 1, but can't stand WoW and Age of Conan. - As for coming MMOs, I am very much looking forward to Elder Scrolls Online. And for RPGs? Well, Divinity: Original Sin.

PS. I currently run one Pathfinder P&P game using vigor and vitality rules, and play in one Shadowrun game.

PPS. Someone above spoke of Dark Souls. Couldn't stand that either. But, I do love me some Witcher-series and Severance - Blade of Darkness.

We?re all dead, just say it.

You may want to give Pathfinder Online a look.  It is an mmorpg in development.  I was a hard-core DnD'er over the last 8 years.  I currently bounce around quite a bit.  I play a little Eldevin for mmorpg, a lot of Hearthstone for strategy, and I'm on an adult server for Minecraft (creative).

I liked NeverWinter for a bit when it was in Beta, but it was just so damned easy.  I spent years in Darkfall and LOTRO, too.  I'm not sure if that helps too much.

DDO and am a heavy backer of Pathfinder Online which I will play as soon as it it enters early enrollment later in the year. MUDs are good too for the old RPG feel though it is hard to readjust myself to playing games without graphics after so long (although I did used to play MUDs in the mid 90s and give them a look every so often.)
