Why I am GOING to be playing ESO
Every time I read something from a person about not having dots that lead you right to the quest item, not having a dot on the mini map or not having a mini map at all for crafting nodes. I read about today a person who won’t play because the game doesnt have the ability to go underwater. Another person ranting about the fact that the first 10 levels arent fast enough. Another person complaining they don’t understand the crafting mechanic. All of this makes me want to play ESO even more.
When did we as gamers lose the ability or sense of discovery when something does happen that we didnt expect or didn’t fully understand only to then understand it after some looking or researching, do we all forget Allakhazam. I know I played the beta and only got to level 5 or 6 on three different characters and then a friend mentioned a treasure chest quest that he was doing in an area and I kicked myself for not finding that quest because i rushed to fast through an area. Have we really de-evolved to a state where we want our mmos to be on rails and we want just to hit a couple of buttons to max level so we can start grinding the same thing over and over and over again just so we can buy that new mount or vanity pet or something that means nothing in the scheme of playing the game?
I received a quest out of a random chest in the beta that I had to look around to discover the place where I had to dig up the loot. No dots on the maps only a vague scrap of virtual paper showing me around where I would find it. It was only a few gold and a sword or something but it was fun and interesting looking fro something that was not at a dot on a mini map
Crafting in an MMO is something I really enjoy and I absolutely hate systems that give you recipes every X levels automatically and is a one button push your way to MAX. I bet by the time I am high enough level to actually use cool new crafting items I will understand it ......I may just have to oh I dont know invest some time in it..... Oh the horrors
The Subscription model. Yep I don’t mind it what it means is we won’t have to put up with so many people who dont want to invest in the success of a game. I dont want to pay for the "vanity pet of the week" by buying packs of content that are just fluff so I can dance around in front of the bank to show it off. I would rather have the devs know they have a stream of revenue coming in that can actually pay for real content. If you can’t afford 15 or 20 dollars a month for the hours of enjoyment (yes you should be enjoying what you pay for) perhaps you should be out getting a Job instead of gaming.
I know their is a segment of our gaming society that wants to be first to everything first to post in a new dev forum post first to get to max level first to get that shiny new uber cool item. Well guess what you can move on every 30 days to a different game but their is a segment of us that don’t mind waiting a bit or exploring or seeing how things hash out. The Devs are working do you really think any dev wants to make a game that is horribly unfun or not finished you think they dont want to have every feature they can cram into a game? Not in the least they are gamers as well and they take great pride in what they do and it is an art.
Will ESO be a success or failure? Who cares I will enjoy it until I am not enjoying it anymore and not worry about what isnt there. I will enjoy the content and multiple classes you can play and the world they have created I know they will be tweaking and changing things for months after launch. I will enjoy playing with all the other members of our guild that are in it.
I understand there is a large part of the population who don’t feel this way and that’s fine the good thing we have these days is options WoW, EQ2, Wildstar, EQ Next, Neverwinter, GW2 and a ton of other ones. Just play them all with the goal of finding something in them that you enjoy and dont focus on what they dont have. Life is to short J

I made a thread expressing my observed limitations of the game and despite them I will also be playing because of the reasons you mentioned here. It has that old school vibe that I missed since EverQuest. I too had an EQ Bible with printouts from the trusty Allhakazam. Maps, Recipes, and handwritten notes from cover to cover!I It was awesome. I even had a magelo profile.
/le sigh.
I am leaning towards purchasing TESO. But I'm not sold just yet. My biggest hangup is the initial cost is higher than other MMOs with a sub.
By the nine.../cringe/laugh...
Though not all women fall into the stereotype you are mentioning I get it..I do...and you'll likely be right. XD
It is very awesome what Zenimax did with female representation thus far in the game.
Yeah...real "old school" vibe where you can use a soul gem and resurrect right where you stand. Death has no meaning to me in this game. Items are repaired very easily and even if I don't have a soul gem *gasp* I reappear at the entrance of a dungeon or nearest shrine with all my items still on my body. Very "old school" of them to put floating icons over the heads of people with quests and objects that you need to interact with. I'll sure need to break out the old thinking cap for that... Oh, and it's super "old school" to allow you instant teleportation all over the map...from anywhere on the map.
Oh, and the comment about the guy who wanted underwater swimming? That you think the game doesn't need? You mean...like in the original EQ that did have underwater swimming? Noooo... that would be too "old school."
"But...but, but, these are conveniences to make the game easier...these make the game better..."
So...not as "old school" as you thought, is it?
When I was in Rift, I was in a guild made up of people mostly my age (middle aged) The leadership was based around 8 primary officers. 6 of which were husbands and wives the other 2 didn't know each other outside the game. But still 4 men and 4 women lead the guild. Thing is, the women who played the game typically wore skimpy outfits on their toons. And that's not the only game. I've had similar experience with women gamers. In WoW, a particluar asst. GM loved to show off. Also in GW2, a particular GM. Now they didn't go crazy with it, but they didn't mind showing a little pixel skin. I used to think that whenever I saw a female character wearing metal bikinis and thigh high boots, that I was looking at a G.I.R.L. instead of a girl. However, I don't make that assumption anymore. Some women gamers really do enjoy a little sex appeal in their game. That said, there were many who were also offended at being represented as a sex object. So, it goes both ways.
You just sound angry. However I said "old school vibe"...It is far more hand holdy than EverQuest but less than World of Warcraft. That is all.
..Oooooobviously.
If I play a female I don't mind the skimpy...nor am I am offended by it. I just find the change refreshing. It's almost as good as the complete reversal that FFARR did where it was the men who could dress really skimpy.
meow.
However, I rarely play female toons.
I am not sure my original intent was to make it seem old school, even EQ realized it had to change its death penalty as people expected more of an easy game play. Is it also your belief that ESO will never ever have underwater content? So by your logic every new MMO that comes out should have every single feature of every other MMO ever created because you will find someone somewhere that will consider an MMO unplayable if it doesnt have that one feature that there other last favourite MMO had?
Also a game having a Vibe of old school to someone doesnt mean it has a feature set it means it has a "feel" and if one person likes it for that so be it. Look up the definition of Vibe if you need.
So I am guessing Davey your not going to be playing ESO at all at launch?
Nope. But, enjoy the hand-holding with kid gloves.
No worries mate Get it at G2A for a lot less, 60$ seemed way too much for me too !

I´ll be playing ESO from launch too.
I tried both ESO & WildStar on the last 2 beta Tests.... and definetly "WS" is not for me.
I just can´t get into that Disney Channel MMO. I just can´t......
In ESO i feel confortable, the game tickles my curiosity....i´m willing to learhn more...to advance more...
Probably i´ll hit the progression wall very soon.... and since i´m not a PvP player i will quit playing mostly because of the subscription...
But i´m decided to give it a try since i have a satisfying experience during my 2 betas.
Sorry bud, but if you had a chance to get into beta you'd be singing a different tune
Whip, it was very nice of you to write my review for me.
There are complaints about no mini-map for crafting materials / resource nodes? I like the fact that I need to look around to find crafting materials. People want mini maps with dots? Go play every other MMORPG.
So many people complain that the game doesn't feel enough like ESO, then complain that they want a map to the resources? Exploring for resources is part of the fun for me. I'm not saying it's hard to do, but you do need to go looking for them and I think that fits an Elder Scrolls game well. (I just hope that mods can't be made to find resource nodes so I don't feel I'm at a disadvantage without the mod.)
As for not understanding crafting, the simple stuff like extracting resources (such as ore to ingots) is straightforward but isn't immediately obvious how to do it. Once you know, everything falls into place (at least it did for me). But so many people ask in game how to extract resources that they do need to make a tutorial for it. Or people can press F1 and read the tutorial, but no one does that (or knows it exists in game). I'm not sure how helpful crafting is after the first 10 levels, but its a good way to keep yourself geared up early on.
I'm going to play at launch, but I'm not saying the game is perfect either. I'm seeing the same major quest bugs I saw two betas ago, so that's not promising. However, a few people in chat mentioned that we were playing an older build of the game to stress the servers. I hope that's true... I didn't go searching to see if that was correct.
Playing with a friend was also a bit of a mess if you're not on the same step of a quest. It's already been mentioned in articles and in other posts, but I agree that there should be some way to fix this -- even if its as extreme as preventing the player ahead a step or two from getting loot so that they can't farm certain steps. I'd rather help a friend to catch up and not get loot rather than to wait for them to catch up. (That may not be the best way to fix it, just a quick thought.)
I was trying to think of other things I don't like about the game, but getting some major bugs fixed, specifically with quests, are at the top of my list. Here's hoping they show some improvement in the next (?) beta.
Playing the beta got me to pre-order as soon as the beta ended.
MMORPG = Mostly Men Online Role Playing as Girls
Do you mind sharing your reason for pre-ordering? I was pretty let down but I'm noticing a lot of people who are pvp-centric seem to be more motivated in purchasing it. As a RPG focused player I found that my choices were far to limited. The classes were defined...I couldn't just mix and match spell schools. I was forced along a path as a "good" character in order to have access to new territories and cities. I can't interact with most of the scenery...I don't want to keep going on but there's just so much...
I go back to days of Anarchy Online where we had Trox in a Thong. as a pretty common occurance
They were the "tanky" looking dudes, running around in the game. But their lore is that they were genetically altered for physical work and combat so they were big and dumb......also considered genderless So while you had these big dudes, they could wear any gender locked outfit. So that's what they did.

I also pre-ordered after the last beta. Got me the CE to boot.. The classes, sure theres only 4, but you can customize to your taste. We did the 1st dungeon with 2 sorcs and 2 templars. One Tank Templar, one Healer Templar ( in cloth no less) the 2 sorcs also had different play styles. One was medium armor and axes, the other ( me) pet and ranged in cloth. So 2 classes, 4 different play styles.
I always play the hero in any game. Especially MMOs. Never felt the need to play a bad guy really.
Im a crafter, so the crafting REALLY got me hooked. I love the fact I can actually make alcohol. With beneficial buffs.
At lower levels, except for iron, gathering flowers and herbs was a little hard.
The combat didnt feel like a rotation was all you need. You need to keep an eye on your magika, stam, and hp.
What hooked me in was the dungeon. Doing Banished Cells was a heck of a lot of fun!
I do love Elder Scrolls games. From Daggefall. to Morrowind, to Skyrim. ( Oblivion was meh to me)This game brought back that feel. From the graphics, the armors, the lore, everything screamed Elder Scrolls.
Thats why I got the game. It may not be for everybody, but it is for me.
And it doesn't need to be for everybody, just for enough people to keep the amount of revenue rolling in that is necessary to keep the lights on. The more a game tries to be for everybody, the less well it seems to serve anybody.
Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me.
