IDK has this site experienced some kind of drop in uniques?
Well if that is the case just have a sister website for RPGs or change the name of your current web site to RPG Online. Just remember that just because some marketing guru in an ivory tower decided to change the MMORPG acronym to a new splashy new name doesn't change really anything. I can guarantee that those brainiacs never played video games.
it is a shame, i loved this site as being all about mmo games and a place to come for nothing but mmo info - and i see plenty of new games coming out that look like mmo and call themselves mmo, the change was clearly going to happen watching how the site has slowly morphed in recent times
i know you have to do what is best for your business and if covering more genres is better for you then i can understand that - as a mmo gamer i cant say i am not disappointed though
I was wondering when this change would happen. I for one am happy for this added direction you are taking. RPGs are my favorite genre to play and I almost play them exclusively. I feel that over that last few years people have lost sight of the RPG in the MMORPG space, I hope this added direction will bring back the knowledge and love of RPGs to the MMORPG space.
Looking forward to reading the reviews, previews and watching the videos.
So this is just like any other game site now? Ok.. Not sure what the point is then.
I am not for adding non-MMOs to MMORPG.com, that's kind of silly, as is the attempted justification for why the site is heading this way.
It has nothing to do with the genre out growing itself or the lines becoming blurry. We all know what games are MMORPGs and what games are just RPGs, this is not a difficult thing to tell. Skyrim is an RPG and not an MMORPG, that wasn't hard now was it?
The real reason is because it allows this site to grow, get more members, more staff, and make more money. That is it, plain and simple.
I don't care much that you guys want to make more money and appeal to a bigger audience, that's fine. I do mind that you feel the need to justify this with lies that we are now having a hard time telling what is an MMORPG and what isn't.
I see from comments above that mmorpg will lose a lot of members unhappy with new changes. Well... by by then.
Personally I am very, very happy. I'm here mostly for information, raw knowledge about gaming. A passive member, if you prefer. And for me, from my point of view, adding more information in this topic is highly beneficial.
And you know what? I'm convince that I'm not alone in this opinion, that soon we will have a lot of new members with new views / ideas. Sure, some of them will be more interested in discussion about semantics and metaphysics (like why site called mmorpg take interest in non-mmo's and what to do with it) but a lot of people will also post interesting reviews, ask intelligent questions and give informative answers.
Thanks to all mmorpg stuff for your work, I hope that you will be even more busy now.
I doubt many big budget MMORPG's are starting development with a PC focus these days after all the failures lately. This site would not have many games to write about in a few years if they didn't broaden their focus like this.
Personally I'm glad the genre is doing poorly and developers are shifting focus towards MOBA's and console. The way I see it, PC MMORPG's need to die off first so we can start over and get something new and refreshing going in the genre again.
Meh. I'd much rather go to one site and see more information on the stuff I'm interested in than several sites that each have just a little of the information I am interested in. At the same time, I can see how the people who started with the site or started in the genre can feel a bit put out. No, I don't think those people are special snowflakes. In fact, I will happily mock those people who think they are special snowflakes for the simple act of buying games that they like.
I've never been part of a small-ish community that had a sudden, large influx of new people and had the community I was part of survive. A community resulted from the old and new people, but it wasn't the community I was part of and familiar with. There was just no way to maintain the former cohesion. So I can see where a lot of people are coming from when they get upset about stuff like this.
Hopefully this will allow more focus on indie titles and indie developers. Sure, we need information on those AAA titles, but that information will be pretty easy to come by. Even if there were very few articles on ESO here, there would be a flood of information in the forums as soon as it was possible. So hopefully there will be more articles on indie developers and games.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
I personally have no objection to you covering RPGs and other onlime game types.I just don't like when you an others broaden the definition of MMO to include things you want to cover/play.
Well this is disappointing news. Anyone have any recommendations of websites that have info on MMORPG's exclusively? I'm just want a site that has news for MMORPG's.
Hogwash. You guys were doing fine before. This is some lame excuse for some higher up who wants another BMW. What this is, is selling out, plain and simple. Though, it's not like none of us knew you were doing it already. I'd be embarrassed to work for this site, I honestly don't know how you do it. I started noticing it when Diablo was considered a MMO by this site. I knew it for a fact when this site features sex ads from asian video games for months on end. It's clear that the people in charge here don't care about the readers. Now you've become the corporate shill. Congratulations sir, I hope it's worth working for a company like that.
Have you seen the fake comcast commercial? It reminds me of this site. Look it up. It's about how comcast 'doesn't give a F#$%'.

I don't come here for non-MMO news. I can get that elsewhere and in a better presentation. If you're going to change focus, I recommend you re-name and re-brand. That way, instead of visiting daily, I'll know that visiting weekly is fine.

OK this guy has it right!
I always wonder by some twist of fate why MMORPG made the mistake of not calling it CEWLGAMES.org Then you could print what you like and people couldn't nitpick about the content. Most gamers don't just play mmos and are happy to read about other games we might like to know about (we know you play THEM as well) If people have to get butthurt about you printing a story about a game that isnt an MMO then they probably aren't the community contributors you were hoping for anyway.

Psssh. I write for this site because they provide lamborghini's as a signing bonus. We're in JET TERRITORY now baby! :-)
In other words will you be reviewing whatever new version of the Fiend Folio, Bunnies & Burrows, or GURPS is out? ( sorry haven't played since the early 90s >.>)

I think Bill made it pretty clear that we're not changing focus. We're expanding what we offer. If you came here for MMO news, you're still going to get it, same as ever.

Again, the site isn't named MMO.com. Covering RPGs that aren't MMOs is just as much within their scope as covering MMOs that aren't RPGs.

It's hard enough to take this site seriously when you guys constantly display softcore porn ads. Throwing MOBA coverage into the mix can't be that much worse I guess. People will probably continue to use the main feature of this site -- the forums -- and ignore the majority of everything else. Kind of like they currently do.

Excellent question.
A lot more work than you'd imagine, when we have a brand new site for MMORPG coming (soon, I swear) and plenty of cross-over readership.
Try to be excellent to everyone you meet. You never know what someone else has seen or endured.
