A fantasy mmorpg with high character specialization?

Hi, I've tried to search for similar posts but didn't find any, my apologies if it has already been covered elsewhere.

I used to play MUD's a fair bit (I'm 30!!) , and loved the extent to which you could specialize a characters abilities in some of these. Now that online fantasy games have reached to the current graphical peaks, of which I am mostly unfamiliar with, can someone tell me which fantasy mmo's are worth buying, paying server fees, which also have extensive character creation possibilities? (Lots of races and classes to choose from) The only mmo's I have played so far are Eve Online and Guild Wars. I read a review for Saga of Ryzom and it seemed promising.

Thanks for your help.

Everquest 2 has a crapload of races/classes/character customization. you can even change their bone structure on their faces. (nose chin, eye shape, eye color, cheak bones, forehead). etc)

You said you were interested in Ryzom, and it may be worth trying. There is a lot of customisation to be had and over 11,000 skill levels ingame. Theres a 7 day free trial, it may be worth having a go :)

Most have free trials. I'd recommend Dark Age of Camelot. Plenty of customization and tons of classes, races and sub-classes to chose from as well as skill trees within any given class so even if you chose to be a wizard you could wind up very different from another player who chose to be a wizard.

There's a 14 day free trial for it as well as a graphics patch specifically for updating the trial to DAOC's newest graphics so you can see what they're like.

As far as a Fantasy game with good Character creation I would have to go with EQ2 so long as you have a good comp I found it to be the best but DAOC is also very good if you dont have a great comp and its also alot of fun

DAoC does have a ton of races and classes to choose from but the customization for the physical appearance of your character is horrible. You can make him tall or short and pick from 4 different hair styles. Sweet!

Try about 10 different hair styles. 6 or 7 different faces. Control of eye size/shape and nose size/shape. Control of jaw depth/width and 16-17 eye colors and hair colors. I honestly never had any complaints about the level of customization in DAOC. It's certainly not as powerful as EQ2's character customization but then... we're talking about a 4 year old MMORPG verses a 1 year old MMORPG. However, once you start playing the skill sets, armor sets, ability to dye your clothing, etc. are a lot more customizeable than EQ2.

I'll be the first to agree that the engine is older and the level of customization at character creation isn't as good as some MMORPG's that are newer than it but it's better than a lot of them out there. And amazingly few MMORPG's give you as much control over your character's look within the game.

Like I said, it's a free trial.... certainly worth giving it a shot.

Cool, gonna try out these both, maybe the trials can convince me :).

Ok, maybe it was just because I was playing the trial version. It may be different if you buy all the expansions I guess.

Definatly DAoC there's 44 different classes and 18 different races devided by 3 different realms. Extensive c/c in the beginning while you're making your character, loads of different armor at higher levels and a huge amount of weapons which you can also dye(most of the time). Also the graphics are sweet if you have 1 gig in your computer. Nobody looks the same in DAoC, not even at level 5-10.
