I'm a pet fiend. Some summoners have a good deal for them as well. Not just any 'pet' system. I'm sick and tired of the static cardboard pets. Where every Ralph pet is exactly like every other Ralph pet.
There's been one game that I know of that has created this hunger. Rappelz, but they've gone down a dark path I don't like. Grindy I can handle. Sacrificing other pets to make 1 pet stronger... just no.
I've been looking for years to no avail. Regently joined a multi game guild and they chatted about games I never even knew existed. Since this is gaming central maybe one of you out there know of a little known, but much beloved, game that would alow me to actually train and nuture my pets or a summoner that has traits and form that changes according to what I choose.

You could try Achaea. It has 2 classes that revolve around summoning a bunch of pets.
The Sentinel class can transform into animals that give you different attacks depending on your current morph, and they also summon a bunch of forest animals. The Occultist class summons a bunch of chaos entities, and they can transform into a weird tentacle monster thing.

I was in Dragon Prophet from beta. The system was.. decent but relied completely on RNG. Plus the second time it made my computer BSD I removed it. Can't afford to replace anything if it ends up causing hardware failure.
Edit: I've tried text based, not my cup of tea.
Could you go into a bit more detail about the kind of game you want? You mention pets, but most MMO's have at least a few "pet" classes. I just don't think that's quite what you mean.
Are you talking about some kind of Pokemon MMO, where you go collect a billion pets and... I don't know, have them fight other pets?
You make me like charity
Ni No Kuni has a robust Familiar system. Each captured familiar can be evolved twice and the final form has two separate variations.
However if you don't like JRPGs this may not be up your alley. It's also a PS3 exclusive so there's that. It really is a gorgeous game and easily one of the best I've played on my PS3.
