Whats the worst part about MMORPGs?

KnowledgeKnowledge Member UncommonPosts: 140

I've been playing MMORPGs for about 10 years now.  I can honestly say that I have tried most of them that have been released since then.  There have been many improvements as far as graphics, the size of the worlds etc etc.  But I cannot truthfully claim that the gameplay experience has improved greatly.  They have definately done a good job of creating an illusion for me alot of the time, playing for longer periods without having much fun, waiting for something great to happen.  It just seems like I've seen alot more revolutionary graphical improvements than gameplay.

This is, in my opinion, the worst part.  I love playing with other people, I enjoy the graphics, I like the fighting sometimes and the exploration.  PvP is nice.  But I just can't stand "working/grinding" for what seems like nothing.

How about you all.  Whats your beef with today's MMORPGs???

The simple fact that alot of the MMOG's just seem like all work and no play. The lack of involvment and the lack of things to do, other than kill things, is a big issue. Game Dev's are being to narrow minded and not designing their games to meet the needs of more than one or two groups of players, thus leaving the others out, or with a bad taste in their mouth. Many are copy-cating, some are just plain nieve, and the ones that try to perform miracles are either aiming to high, or getting shot down before they can deliver.

I know exactly how you feel, and have put much thought into why it is we are this way, us old schoolers that is. I'll let you know when I get all figured out hehe. :)

The worst part about mmorpg's IMHO is most are geared to a linear game play. You start out as a Noob living in noobville and from there onward, everything is like... "get X amount of this to get X amount for crafting, "do X amount of this to get X amount of XP", "hack and slash X numbers of this mob to get X amount of, blah blah blah and so on. It's like no one is thinking of doing the business in a new way. Most companies are walking the oh so common circle of stupidity. They are not in it for the long term duration...only the 2-5 yrs mindset.  Where are the visionaries out there? We need ppl who are making a mmorpg to outlast the competition. What percentage of the games out there do you think will still be around in 10 years?  I ask again, where are the visionaries out there?  If there are none, then you will be playing the exact same type of games 5-10 years from today guaranteed. It does not matter if the game has the best eye-candy in the industry if it's has putrid game content, bugs, and the same quest and story line. One thing is for certain, you will get bored.

The problem with mmorpg currently is that the majority of them are cookie-cutter games. They are all taken from a single pattern and design and placed in a different wrapper then shrink-wrapped in plastic and sold to the gaming public. It doesn't take a long period of time for one to sift through the pile of mmorpg games out there currently to find that a lot of them came from the same dung pile. What has caused this is that many developers want to find a quick way to cash in on the demand for such games. It's like when the first invention of the automobile was made by Henry Ford, it didn't take long for others to obtain the ingenious idea that they also wanted to make cars as well. We need a paradigm shift in mmorpg development, else we will have a very stale and outdated gaming experience in 2010 collectively.

We as Gamers should desire and even demand more from gaming companies. If something isn't done about the current state then it's our fault. We need a mmorpg revolution to begin in 2006.  image

-how they are restricted by technology.
-how focused they are around time retention of subscribers instead of the game.

I Hate super gfx games, give me a game with ok gfx good game play over a crap game play super gfx game.

Heres a idea lets start a game where you run for office and its like a real kinda world. You can fight and lvl yeah but you also have to be nice and make friends for votes to rune the town or run the game world. i think thats a great idea and cant find a game that had the balls to try big time not as a little part of game but what makes the game go round.

They have all the bad aspects of McDonalized big business (lack of CS, lack of innovation, expensive, cold, bourgeois tastes, lawsuit and copywright zealotry), combined with all the shoddiness and shady practices of a two-bit garage operation (lack of stable builds, the D&L scandals, the NGE from SWG, all the money and rip off scandals making headlines, all that crap about "growth and evolution" as an excuse not to put out a stable game, etc.)

This genre wants to grow up, and become legit.  In the last five years, they have come a long way.  They did not get there by doing NGE's, and "pulling Farlans."  They did it by proving they will not fold up their tents at the prospect of a bad quarter here or there.  2005 is a year that has been bad for the genre.  To be honest, these games are starting to look about as legit as pyramid schemes.

We need consumer protections.  We need reassurances by developers and publishers that the games are a good value.  We need some guarantee of quality, and stability in a genre that absolutely refuses to give up their prerogatives.

The worst part is when they enforced a gameplay while promoting others.  If you rewards PvPers better than anyone else, don't promote solo or grouping PvE content.

I like to know my game has a progression I approve and care, if a game promote solo, it should means that the best soloers in the game earns their stuff solo...if it is not the case, don't promote solo.

Having 5 "End Game" is a minimum IMO for the MMO who is to beat WoW with it 2 "End Game".  Argue and trash me all you want, we all know this is the only way to motivate differents folks with different tastes without shafting the other...giving everything to raiders is a mistake a serious company should not afford to do anymore.

Worst part is the addiction. Well... maybe I'm using the term addiction too liberally, but a good mmorpg is a love/hate thing for me. Love the gameing experience, but I hate how easily I can slip into the routine of gaming until 4am.. /pityme

Devs seem more focused on figuring out what the mass market likes to spend it's time doing, rather then finding out how to make the game more fun. Time sinks no matter how cleverly disgused are not a good feature of a game. Though when research tells the devs players like to do something, they don't try and make that feature more fun, they just seem to try and make it take longer.

The nerf it with a sledge hammer rather then a scalple is also a huge failing on some game devs part. If somethings too powerful they don't have to make it usless so people abandon it and flock to the next FotM.

It seems almost stupid to have to point this out to them but.....make your game fun and people will want to play it. It might be cheaper to come up with a time sink rather then real content, but we're not stupid. Once the newness of a game wears off that time sink is boring and people quit and move on to new games in the hopes that one day a dev team will learn.

The worse part about MMO's is that developers keep making the same f*$*ing (dang man I got to censor myself?) mistakes over and over again.

The worst part of MMOs are the technical issues. At least that is my experience playing WoW. Laggy areas, inability to log on, getting dropped from the server right in the middle of an instance, stuff like that. WoW had a maintenance day every Tuesday and still the servers would break down more and more as the week progressed. The servers would be pretty good on Tuesday after they came back up, but by Friday night they were back to their crappy performance all over again.
