I like quite a few things about ESO, some things not so much. The view distance to me is a big issue currently. Even maxed out it is very short and really takes away from the graphical beauty of the game in my opinion. It also seems silly to have it set so short considering how well the game runs. I have a mid range laptop and ran the game on max settings smooth as butter so I'm sure I could handle a boost in view distance, not to mention people with real gaming rigs I'm sure could handle a hefty spike in the view distance without much issue. I very much hope this is increased for launch.

View distance = the DISTANCE at which environmental graphics are rendered.
FOV = your first person view angle (nothing to do with distance)
My comment is about view distance, not FOV
Try setting this to max... the distance archievable is quite huge...

I did set it to max, as I said in my OP, and it is hardly huge even when maxed. On the contrary, it is quite short.
Also, typically the distance you can see plays a big roll in how large the world feels. A lot of thought is put into how far the maximum view should be for this very reason. Especially in an mmo, where the world size with this type of quality is finite.

You're not happy with both the View Distance slider and the FOV slider?
I think the engine handled the view distance perfectly... large objects where visible from very very far, smaller objects required you tp be a bit closer... but i dont remember any stuff popping up out of oblivion when i got close..
this is not one of the developers concerns, in my opinion its ballanced perfectly.

Agreed. This was one of the biggest draw backs and immersion killers in Vanguard. Truly was something I just couldn't get over, especially when im looking to roam an open world as an escape in an MMO.

I had no problems and the view distance seemed natural to me.
That's what you took from my post huh? Interesting. As I said in my op - I feel the max distance should be increased. My post has nothing to do with the FOV
I disagree - I feel the view distance limiting fog comes in far too early to seem realistic even when maxed out
I didn't find it short at all with the draw distance slider set to max. The draw distance at max is just barely hyper-realistic. Any more and it would look unnatural. I also though there was much less obvious "popping into hi rez" as you get closer to NPCs and objects compared to other MMOs... the transitions are gradual and natural. To me nailing those transitions is far more important than maximum draw distance - those rez "pops" when done badly are really jarring and distracting.
I also thought that the haze fog and dust effects they use to blur the more distant objects looks very realistic - and I say this as someone who does a lot of landscape photography. You don't always go for maximum sharpness and detail at all distances or try to remove all atmospheric haze in post processing. You can do it sometimes if you're going for a less natural look, but not as frequently as the detail-obsessed gear-heads like to do it The slightly less focused areas and transitions in detail give the images depth and makes them look more natural.

Just to quote my earlier response. There is a reason they limit how far you can view the world. The fact that fences, windmills and houses don't pop up right in front of you is what I was referring to regarding Vanguard.

Only thing I hope they do is put the camera right over my head on 3rd person...not 500 feet to the right

The fog and short view distance annoyed me as well.
You can however manually edit the ini and set to view distance to a value beyond the "100" that the ingame slider allows you to. You can find the ini in you games' folder somewhere in C:UserYourUserNameMyGamesenimax or similar (can't look it up atm)
After editing you have to rightclick->properties->write protect the file, otherwise the view distance will be set back to whatever the ingame slider is set to when you start the game.
The slider on "100" equals a value of "2.00000" (not sure about the number of 0s as i type this) in the ini. Setting it to "3.*" gives you "160" in game. I haven't tried what the maximum possible value would be as 160 looked ok to me already.
Hey I live in Florida, its so flat and forested here we never see far distances, and its almost always hazy, guess it seemed normal to me.

Things like this keep me wondering what they tried to archieve with this? But Zenimax is workinhg hard to remove features like this, or to give players the option to opt out of them and choose what they where used from other games..
the removal of this silly feature however hasnt made the patchnotes yet

This unintuitive feature was present in FO3 too.
Thank god for player mods and addons! An addon that reset the crosshair to the middle of the screen and moved it higher above the player character was one of the first and most downloaded mods ever for FO3.
Well this thread is confusing to someone who has not played the beta.
IS the draw distance in ESO far too short?
Or IS the draw distance in ESO on par with every other MMORPG?
Many conflicting statements in this thread
Better than a lot, on par with some and worse than a minority.
Thanks
I think what you are trying to say is ESO has much better (further) draw distance than the majority of mmorpgs on the market.
Excellent
