So anyone stocking up supplies for when the bird flu hits?

I see the US has put out a guideline for getting prepared for the deadly virus.  Anyone stocking up on canned food, water....peanut butter?

Seeing as how only 12% of the nations in the world can afford Tamiful and even then there is only about enough of it for less than 400 mil worldwide and the production of it comes from 1 company in the world that can only produce 300 mil tablets a year and even THEN it only works 50% of the time and the death toll is over 50% for those that catch the virus.

Are you stocking up on anything or do you all have your head in the sand? image

Isn't Bird Flu just a bug that will be sorted with an upcomming patch?

Sticking ones head in the sand seems like a huge risk to run into an Ostrich, BOOM! bird-flu..

I think the threat is widely exagerated, and even if it actually hits I fell confident in our ( Sweden ), ability to deal with that.

The only ones who are truelly safe are the people on Malta, the only "macho" sport that exists there is bird hunting, meaning any that comes within 2 miles of that island will be disintegrated by several thousand shotgun pellets.

Who would have thought hunting animals to extinction could be a GOOD thing.

*goes to find a copy of Birds by Alfred Hitchcock for a laugh*

Anyone find it weird how the particalur strain is H5N1 and HIV is H15 in roman. Maybe someone with HIV %^$%^$ a pigeon with flu and bam H5N1!::::12::

No seriously you would have to find a live infected bird and drink its blood before there is even a chance of getting it.

    Here's what Im doing:

    1. Im not buying or eating a single piece of poultry for another 6 months. That's not hard for me since I utterly detest poultry meat

    2. Not worrying about it too much

I dont think tamiflu will help and I really dont think the flu shot will work. From my understanding, this unique flu strand is so different that tamiflu and your flu vaccines may not have any effect. One thing is for certain. If you do get bird flu, make out a living will fast. The mortality rate is over 95%.

Does anyone esle see the irony of The-Raven posting a thread about the Bird Flu?

Anyways, unless you plan on juggling chickens or handling birds in some other manner, you will not be at risk. If you cook your food, always the best practice I have found, then you do not have to worry about this. I believe the media is doing its best to pump this issue up so that they have something to report on. Is this a serious problem if you get it, of course....is this going to be a worldwide pandemic, no I do not believe so. So everyone but En1gma cook your poultry, do not go playing with dead birds in the street and you should have nothing to worry about.

...lol, in reards to #1 En1gma, you do realize that cooking your chicken at roughly 170 degrees F kills off bacteria and viruses right?  Seriously, it is statements like this that perpetuate hysteria...  Same bullshit after 9/11 "Don't fly on a plane, or a terrorist will take it over!!!"...  The American economy is extremely sensitive to this kind of thing, while certain businesses are selling like mad due to this hysteria, this whole 'avoiding eating poultry' will damage the industry and drive chicken costs up for us who aren't needlessly scared over processed poultry...  Also, poultry goes through many QC phases, so anything you have in your grocery store will not contain the H5N1 strain...  Guaranteed...

    /shakes_head

BFD, 5 people died in Turkey...  I am sure that yesterday worldwide, 5 people died by eating their own feces, or od'ing on crack, or choked to death on a breakfast sandwich...  Hardly anything to 'prepare' for if you ask me...  Remember the pandemic that was SARS?  I thought so...

Please dont waste another minute of your life worring about this.
So far every single expert has been calling it a theoretical threat.

Or as we mmorpg trolls might say: It's overhyped, very much like EvE ::::20::

Incorrect, it kills bacteria, there is an array of viruses that arent bothered by thoose temperatures at all.

There is a reason hospitals pressure cook their re-usable tools at 120 degrees celcius and many atmospheres of pressure. ( 120 celcius is something like 250 degrees farhenhiet, i think )

If the bird-flu is one of thoose I do not know.

Haha. You gotta love how scared the media manages to get you people across the Atlantic. Come on, there is nothing to worry about. 69 people have died since 2003, you should be more scared about aids, cancer and basicly all other "normal" sicknesses.

And btw. The virus has mutated now, and is resistant to Tamilu. So start panicking, buy out the stores and hide under you bed! You are going to die a painful death! Hahaha

    Pull yourself together ::::12::

I doubt there is any chance of it becoming a epidemic.

I don't need to stockpile anything.  I still have all my stockpiles left over from the 99-00 change.  I have lots of duct tape and plastic left over post 9/11.  I'm set.

Ooopps I don't have any of that stuff since I don't follow media hype.

Even if that flu gets around it's probably the best thing for this Planet. True a lot of people will die but it'll also clear out some of the numb skulls ruinning arounf.  LOL

I just wont eat poultry. And no...simply cooking chicken does not kill ALL viruses. Its no harm to you if I dont eat chicken. I have no desire to
