Sharing one's user ID with others should always be optional. It makes no sense to be identified in guild chat via user ID. Aside from killing immersion, it's also a matter of protecting people's privacy.
If I want to befriend you on my all my alts, awesome. If I don't, let me game in peace without broadcasting through user ID and friend's list that I am on my alt.
Yep, can't change it. After extensive communication with Bethesda they have made it clear, in no uncertain terms, regardless of what I said, that I cannot change my user name to something that will protect my privacy.
Had I known this upon creation of my account name, I'd have made it something different than my real name.
Great.
Oh snap, really? When did you try to change it? Someone earlier said that they got their's changed. Maybe Zenimax changed their policy on it after a certain point?
I don't care, except I want to see people's CHARACTER NAME which I'm used to instead of their account name which is sometimes as random as "jubedube". I don't want to get used to identifying someone as something like that...
Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.
The internet has too much anonymity as it is. Not being able to switch to your troll character is a good thing for the game and community.
The people I want on my friends list I'd like to have all their characters on it....because we're actually friends and have nothing to hide. The people I put on my ignore list I'd want all their characters on it.
There is a great reason for anonymity in online activity. One, you are dealing with millions of people, which are not all sane and if you watch the news at all, you see, there is a lot of murderers out there, predators, con artists, and indivisuals who you would not want to share your personal information with. This should for most people be enough not to have a facebook in their real name, a youtube channel showing their private lives, or other social activities online in which your personal information or self is shared with others.
Because of the risk you place yourself by having your true identity out in the public, you open yourself up for death threats in real llife, unwanted media attention that could make you famous over night, or someone looking to take out a personal revenge on a troller or con artist who has stolen their in game items. Or perhaps was unhappy about being kicked from a guild or other such things.
We must keep in mind that people we deal with on the internet are complete strangers and they should always stay that way unless you can absolutely trust them and meet them in real life and have a relationship with them in real life to know they can be trusted with your personal information.
I am always reminded of the early days in gaming, when someone scamed another person for a Scorpian Breastplate in FFXIV which took the person almost a year to achieve in its early game life. When the person found out the personal details of that con artist in game, he went to his house and murdered that person.
Its stories like this, and the level of seriousness people take their games and the level of hours people put into these games which can lead to some really really bad situations in real life if personal details would be released.
Also on another hand, I think a lot of us have also been the victims of trolls or other unsavory things online, which have lead us to have to change our names in game, or change servers. I personally have had to change my name 19 times in over 10 years of gaming because of online bullying, trolling, having fights with other guild members. These things will sometimes happen over the course of your game life, and the name change and anonymity of these games and the ability to change your name and continue playing the game and enjoying the game your playing is a very important factor in gaming.
I hope someday we never have a World of Warcraft nightmare ever again where REAL ID was pushed in game to try to force people to be nice to each other. If a game every wants to release personal data on people it should require that at the launch of game, never afterwards. The reason for this is to make sure Revenge events never happen in real life and will always stay in the vitural world forever.
Just like Las Vegas, what happens online, should stay online.

Just saw this.. I'd keep trying. Just don't spam the crap out of them. Like once a day maybe? Someone there has got to see some reason and understand why this would be a concern. Maybe even try calling them daily even though you probably aren't suppose to? Maybe if you are persistent enough someone will go the extra mile to help you.

They got back to me just an hour after I sent my request, asking for account verification (the typical name, email, DOB info) and what not. They told me they'll get back to me with further information after I'm verified, so we'll see. I'm kind of glad they asked for verification for a number of a reasons, but mainly because they will see why I want to change my User ID right off the bat lol.

Well I've noticed it is certainly becoming more and more common, but I don't see a reason not to have an option to hide it if desired.
Maybe in chat options.
In neverwinter and STO you just go to settings and un check show account names.

As far as my cryptic account (ala Star Trek Online being the one I remember specifically) my account name is different than my login name. I don't know if thats because it is something they required from waaaaaaaaaaaay back and are no longer requiring or what. I personally don't like things like this where people can see my account name, makes it one step easier to hack in my opinion. I remember some similar things game companies got flak for, when they required/changed your email account to your login id. I believe WoW at least gave you the option to choose an id that didn't resemble your login. Correct me if I am wrong but didn't GW2 use your login id for chat as well?
Nope same thing.
You do know you can turn off account names in the chat options for ESO in game.
As a matter of fact I believe this is the first time this topic has come up for any game.
STO had this problem too when it launched, I think the voices were loud, but considering the customer service of that game, it fell on deaf ears... and slowly it went away as all the people went away shortly after release.
Wow had it even worse, they were going to release peoples addresses on the forums with their REAL ID.
Only two I know that had this issue, since every other game never showed your username or personal details.
I think wow model is just fine. Choose if you want to invite someone to be your friend only with the specific char, or with real id which means you will be able to see and be friends with every of his char. The choice must be yours anyway.

Good stuff. Hope it works out and I imagine it will.
Is there any official reason why things are being done this way that anyone knows of? (Not that it isn't obviously part of everything that is going on these days)
I also think that giving someone half of your username/password combination right off the bat just for joining your group is a bad idea. Especially since a lot of people use those same usernames to play other games.
I know that the guys making today's games think they can rely on the whole "registered browser" system to protect their game from being hacked, but it doesn't seem like there is a lot of education out there to inform the players that the other games they might be playing could be in danger because this game is giving that information away.
Plus it looks a little stupid and for all of the work that has been done in the other direction completely breaks immersion.
Jesad@Agamotto says, "Don't ask me to do this, I CANNOT!!
I don't know. I guess I prefer to be watched like my father and grandfather before me were watched, IN SECRET!!!"

NOBODY looked at the chat options besides me?
It is counter intuitive to force a player to have to search through options in order to shut off an undesirable option.

Now, it seems to me that would turn them off so the immersion is not broken for someone RPing, which is good and all, but doesn't solve my problem with other people seeing my account name.
I don't particularly like it and before I buy the game I'll be making my password so ridiculously hard that I'll have to copy/paste it to use it.
I'm also thinking about buying game cards instead of entering a CC in there in case they might decide to dump my real name somewhere because when they setup the account my email had my real name in it and they used it in that forum name until I changed it.
What are the odds that I have like 6 regular emails and the one time I use the one with my real name, they decide to use the damn thing. I changed that quick when I saw it. It might be easy if your name is Jamie Smith to blend in, my name is the only one like it in the country - I have to protect it online more than others. Ask me why I don't have a Facebook and why I ignore LinkedIn invitations.
It just goes to show that buisnesses really don't take your private info serious enough. whats next? Actually publishing our full CC numbers? Fraud is everywhere on the net and its only going to get worse, we shouldn't be using any personal info anymore online to tell you the truth. Pretty soon I'll have to go to the courthouse and get a name change in REAL LIFE.
I don't like it. It's just extra baggage tied to your char.
I am assuming however, that this will come in handy when it comes to people trying to troll and cause issues in game. The multiple guild system invites the trolling/spying/alts. The linked account name helps put an end to it, unless people want to buy multiple copies and set up multiple accounts of the game to hide their alts.
SOE changes name to Daybreak games, cause dey break games.
What I don't understand is... They use the username thing, yet don't go further and tie it completely in so you can name your character the same as someone else. Like Cryptic does with Champions Online. I like that system, but it needs to be very clear when you are making your account that this is whats happening.
It makes naming so much easier as time goes on and names fill up. I understand you can use spaces and such. It just boggled me that they went with the username system, yet didn't make it anymore useful other than having a global friends list.
I like that I don't have to go through the hassle of having alts invited to guilds, put on other people's friends' lists etc. It promotes community a little better and, as has been said, no hiding on an alt to talk smack.
Why people choose their real names for online accounts, or stupid/offensive account names I'll never understand.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

This space reserved for pithy comment.
it looks tacky in game and serves no real point being in game.
This game goes to show how difficult properly developing an MMO is. It is hard to predict how people will react to certain things.
If I were the developers I would not have even considered the idea that people would be freaking out about this sort of thing.

nah they don't typically do that these days, they just wait to get all your information via key logger.
hackers don't need to know your account name by seeing it in game.
if you have a strong password and protect yourself against key loggers i don't think you have anything to worry about.
unless you are the type to want to troll in game or play an alt in peace, then i can see the concern about wanting to remain anonymous.
