I cant believe the shit storm over ESO's newb islands when Wildstar has by FAR the worst starting introduction quests I have ever played in a MMO. I mean cmon devs, I think the MMO crowd is past this hand holding click the container 12 times bullshit, and it goes on for HOURS & HOURS in wildstar.... Terrible design

I really think this game is going to be good and cant wait tyo jump into ESO at the end of this month and than play Wildstar in June, Good times for MMO players.

You are saying it is bad because you have done a similar tutorial before?
  • laseritlaserit Member LegendaryPosts: 7,591

    I have to agree:

I found the tutorial very very difficult to play through. The game does improve but the tutorial left a bad taste in my mouth that was difficult to wash away.

It's one thing to have the design philosophy that endgame is what really matters; it is another thing to focus so heavily on making the endgame good that you forget to make what comes before it good enough that people are willing to make the journey to the endgame.  Wildstar really seems to be a game that gets better the higher your level is, but it starts of so atrociously bad that a lot of people aren't going to have the fortitude to reach the point where they start liking it.

I agree -- I was in ONE weekend beta only because I was able to get an alienware key (thanks to those who posted it) and when I found I didn't really like the character class I chose, I was like OH NO I have to do the tutorial again to try a different class.  The tutorial was actually a significant impediment to me trying to find out the right class for myself.

Regarding the tutorial, they really need to bring the dominion one up to par with the exile one.  I could tolerate  the Dominion one, exile one gave me a MUCH better feeling starting out.  Also, is it just me or did the bloom in the Dominion starting area seem way to much?

I couldn't take the dominion one at all.  If I were a dominion guy I would have ended up an exile.  The little scanner at the beginning would have found that cluster of rebellion and I would have ended up in a ziploc bag.

Same thing for me.  I wanted to try out some of the other classes, but didn't have enough enthusiasm to get through the tutorial a second time.  I guess this will at least keep the altitis at bay.

The question is: "For whom are these tutorials aimed for?"

Blizzard themselves have stated that more people have played WoW than is playing right now. That means, if there are about 8 mil. WoW players right now, at least 16 mil. have played it at some point.

Surely there are some poeple who have never even touched MMOs ( i envy them), but almost as surely every one of them knows someone, who has played MMOs at some point and is capable to give tips and maybe teach them.

So, why make tutorials that bores you to death if only fraction of your player base really needs them? Don't they actually turn against you and drive players away?

    The exile tutorial at least  can be done pretty quickly after the first time.  That said an option to skip it after the first time would be nice. It is not one of the game's high points.;

I am a fan of Wildstar, and I am pre-ordering the deluxe edition, and I to will agree that both introduction zones are bad. It's not just the intro zones though it's the whole game up to level 15ish. Everything up to that point is pretty generic from the story to the mundane questing. What is really sad is that this is turning off a lot of people, and these people will never know how great the game gets after 15. After this point the game offers you so much; not to mention the elder game content is amazing.

I recommend plenty of battlegrounds to dull the pain of the first 15 levels, or get in a full group of friends and zip through it, I did this on my most recent character and it was alright.

    @ Psychei:

Strange.. while the tutorial zones are pretty bland I found the first zones after that quite good. I enjoyed Galeras, Algoroc by far more then Whitevale (lvl 20-29 or so) and Wilderrun ("Torine Lifewater" .. worst quest ever btw). Malgrave was kinda good, Farside also. Grimvault (45-50) was mediocre in my opinion.

Going to get a char to level 15 to give it a fair shot then. My expectations for WildStar was very high and, quite frankly, I feel dissapointed at the moment. I was almost sure that I was packing my bags and leave Azeroth for Nexus...

I didn't find the tutorial as horrible as landing on the planet and those HUGE white globes.  That killed my fps and really i stopped playing some because it was too annoying!

I respect your opinion. I disagree with you on the zones following the introductory areas being good. I also really enjoyed the grimvault area. Aside from that I agree with you on the rest.

I really recommend at least trying the game past 15. Find yourself a good group and breeze through the early content.

I'm not interested in WS in the slightest, but I'll say the same thing I said when people complained about ESO's starting areas.

I have only experience 2 MMO's that did not have terrible starter areas/low level content. That's AoC Tortage and GW2. I honestly can't name another MMO that is good at low level. In fact, I struggle to name a RPG that's good at low level. Even some of the greatest RPG's of all time absolutely sucked when you're starting out.

I always thought of it as a given as you have next to nothing when you start out in a RPG, so you just put up with the low levels in order to grow your character.

So while I am not taken by WS, I don't see it as any worse than any other MMO's starting area.

I really enjoyed FF14 ARR after you got out of the town which took 15 mins. WAR was pretty good too at launch when servers were full. Also rift had me immediately feeling like I was part of something big.  I could probably name more if I thought about it but you just said to name a few.

Also Wildstar has an intro that is more than just bad it is horrible. Once again I love the game and I am pre-ordering it, but the intro is one of the worst in history.

Remember back when you took your first Griffin ride in WoW?

Wildstar needs something like that. Maybe give you a little sightseeing tour when you leave the Mothership, whip around planet Nexus and show you some of the places you can see and go.

There comes a point when games designers need to realise most game players.. Know how to play thing and his to work things out. All a player needs is a general poke towards content/quests. And have guards widely distributed that you can ask questions (where do I go to learn crafting etc.

    rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D
