Or just change it in chat settings so it does not show your account name.DUHYou went through all that trouble for nothing. Sad.I'm still fairly certain that changes your chatlog so you see other people's char names and not their account names. Granted I'm not 100% positive and cannot check until this weekend
I might just be old school, but I don't really like it. Even though, this day and age you are almost expected to make a clean email address when starting a new mmorpg.
just because you can change it so YOUR chatlog doesn't show account names doesn't necessarily mean that because you changed a setting in your chatlog that changes what other users will see in theirs

Great stuff! Any company who recognizes as well as aids in sorting out such issues earns a plus in my book. Might reward them with paying full price for the game. I think positive things should be rewarded. There are companies (not just talking about game publishers / developers) out there who give little care about their customers privacy or helping to protect it.
To those saying you can turn it off. Maybe the person used their real name and thought you know maybe I should not have done that and simply wanted it changed. I've done that in the past. I think "why did I do that." Cleaning up all my old and forgotten accounts from 10 years ago wasn't fun either. Very similar to what the op needed done. Accounts I made before I really understood how to take measures in protecting myself online.

Yeah dude, you should get it. My first MMORPG was DAoC and this feels as much as a DAoC 2 to me than it does an Elder Scrolls MMORPG. Also, some of the same people are developing it because a lot of the EA Mythic layoffs went to Bethesda/Zenimax. Gonna be a quality game all around.
How anyone can disregard or not see the obvious flaws in the current system is beyond me.
Agree with all those saying global handle (separate to login ID) would be ideal compromise.
forex.
Login: EXPantsman88 (Only seen by you)
Handle: Pantsman (Seen by anyone with 'enable show ID' ticked - this should also be off by default imo)
IF it is the case that the 'enable show ID' does actually prohibit others from seeing your ID as well (which is very very highly unlikely that it functions like that) then the default setting should be off, or a massive, clear, forewarning given.
It's not a problem to me that my account is identified as such, but my login detalis identified is a big nono, in neverwinter it specificly stated that under no circumstances should your login details be the same as the account identifier ingame.
I have already received my first phishing email trying to get me to log into a bogus eso official site, and the game isn't out yet. They are already starting to attempt to collect usernames and passwords ahead of launch.
RIFT was a fairly recent new game, and I remember the mega-issues they had at launch with hacked accounts. We will just have to wait and see how it plays out with ESO.
SOE changes name to Daybreak games, cause dey break games.
Once you gather a bunch of user id's... here are the 10 most common passwords:
123456
password
12345678
qwerty
abc123
123456789
111111
1234567
iloveyou
adobe123
How many accounts out of every 100 do you think you'd compromise?
These brain dead people deserve to have their account hacked.
They are as bad as my mother, who randomly gives her passwords to sales people at the computer store/cell phone stores, and friends and relatives. Don't ask me how many times she has been hacked...

I don't mind it at all, and agree with Elikal. But I had to vote for bacon ice cream. Seriously, OP, you just had to throw that in there, didn't you? You rotten bastard.
I like it also. Its easier to see who is online, no matter what char there on.
I know account security is a major issue. I read somewhere they will be adding a token or a one time password feature like most games. No, i do not have a link to it. Sorry.
No doubt like others I didn't read the small print when creating my UserID during my first beta session. Not liking the fact that my real name showed up in game I contacted support and after jumping through several hoops I got my UserID changed. However during the next beta event I found that whilst my UserID to login the game was changed, in game I was still showing up as my old one.
I don't know whether this will follow into release or whether it will change. If it continues it suggests that the login (authentication) server uses a different UserID to what is used by the in-game systems. If this is the case and it continues in release it means that you should be able to get your login UserID change and remove the risk that in game you're showing half of your log in information.
Forum Post count does not = Game Intelligence or Knowledge it just shows how often people like to talk.
Wait, frack, so few people have brought up the chat channels showing ONLY your global ID unless you change it in options? And that's your ACCOUNT name? At least on the guild chat? Can someone confirm this? Oh gods this is so fucking annoying, what the hell is even the point on naming your characters when each and every one of them gets called the same un-immersive stupid ass "handle name" anyway, which also is your account name?
Just when I thought it's going to be an okay above average themepark this unneccesary shit begins to pile up. What is with these mmo game companies and death wishes. Why are the persons who make these decisions more retarted than your below average citizen? It's mind boggling, depressive, and fucking annoying.
Originally posted by Elikal Actually I like it, so no matter what alt I play, my guildmates and friends know it is me.
You only addressed one of the two issues here. I get that you are okay with people knowing all the characters you make belong to you, and so am I personally.
The question is, are you okay at the system giving everyone on your friends list, guild list, people you might send a private message to (/tell, /whisper) to know your account login?
Just went over to their site and decided to change my email contact to some other one, but apparently changing email addresses isn't even an option yet?
On one hand I like the idea and on the other I hate it.
During the beta there were a few (perhaps 5-6 over the last 2 weekends) people who were really acting like jackasses. When I put them on ignore I was quite happy to see that they were blocked by account (presumably since the account was the value showing, all characters were blocked?).
That said, while I always end up meeting a few people in every game and generally enjoy hanging out some of the time, I like to have my 'alt' time where I hang by myself and solo craft/quest.
If a friends list shows the account level I assume anyone who has you as a friend can see you on any alt?
I hope not.
I like to have the option to solo and relax without feeling like a bad person because I don't rush off to do what my friends want to do.
Essentially when i sit down to play I am either in a social mood or not.
I like to have an alt that is not tethered to a guild.
Definitely glad I started this thread to heighten some people's awareness about creating their User ID. Hopefully this topic will at least benefit those who are on the fence about this game because of this exact mechanic. I encourage those who are in this position to further consider buying this game, and use this thread as a source of knowledge prior to creating your account so that you make sure to use a name that doesn't tie into anything personal on any social media.
This shouldn't, by any means, be game-breaking for anybody; however, precaution should certainly be taken. So, just be careful in what User ID you create. Make it something that you don't mind being identified as (ex. the name of your main), keep it separate from any other name or ID you use elsewhere, and just have fun. If you do that, then the worst that can happen is Zenimax doesn't make an option to show/hide it, but you can have peace knowing that you made a good safe User ID.
Like someone else said earlier, just upgrade your security info (questions) on your account on the Zenimax website.

I looked and yes it is there.
YOU CAN TURN OFF "SHOW ACCOUNT NAMES"
just because you can change it so YOUR chatlog doesn't show account names doesn't necessarily mean that because you changed a setting in your chatlog that changes what other users will see in theirs

I would think the solution is to not use dumb passwords.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

No Cryptic, going all the way back to CoH, was smart enough to establish a global id that was SEPARATE from your user login id.
Global id == fine.
Exposing username used for login = bad security.
