Starter island skipping needs some serious work

LisaFlexy22LisaFlexy22 Member UncommonPosts: 450

If I was a brand new player and didn't already know about the starting islands, I would have no idea they even existed, let alone how to start the quests there or even get there as it currently stands. Once I arrived on the Ebonheart Pact main zone after Coldharbour there is a nearby questgiver to start the quests there in Stonefalls, but literally ZERO information on how to get to the starter island of Bleakrock or even that I'm supposed to talk to Rana to start that quest chain once I got there. The boat to get back to Bleakrock isn't even close to where you get dropped off after leaving Coldharbour. Not only that, but a lot of the stories seem borked and odd with you auto-skipping the islands and starting on the main island. They really need to add more guidance and fluidity to this.

Personally I think you should go to the starter islands by default and then be given an option to skip them, that would eliminate most of the problems currently.

I agree I didn't mind the starter islands and will probably goto them first anyways for a little more directed experience till I get my feet wet.

I'll be starting there but I guess it's good to give people other options as well

Maybe it's different with other factions but I got off the boat and ran into the guy giving the quest to go back to the islands.  How much easier does it need to be?

I never thought there was anything wrong with the starter islands before and they do need to clean up the quest and add some voice overs to fill everything in but at least for dominion it's pretty hard to miss.

Just started a dark elf, played through the tutorial and then when I arrived I couldn't find the quest giver to get me back there. The quest text indicated I should run to the docks but no one I spoke to could get me back.

I don't require a quest marker but I wonder if it's a bug and one of them was actually the quest giver? I spoke to "everyone".

Then, I made another dark elf and when I declined the tutorial the game put me in THE ALDMERI DOMINION!!

There I was, a dark elf in the aldmeri dominion.

Sounds like AD is better in EP the person to send you back is nowhere near where they drop you off in Stonefalls, nor is there even a word said after leaving Coldharbour about an option to go back or who to find in order to go back.

  • ElikalElikal Member UncommonPosts: 7,912

    I agree.

Would it not be better to sent players to the starter island and then allow them to skip it, instead of auto-skipping it and you need to find your way back? Why did they even do it that way? Makes no sense to me.

I'm actually a little surprised they didn't go with a "you end up in the starter zones after cold harbour, and then there is an option to skip ahead to the next zone" instead of the current "oh, just skip the starter zones and you can go back to them if you wish"

This space reserved for pithy comment.

I agree this would have been the best compromise

Yes I agree with this - some dev decisions really are baffling as it seems like the much easier way to deal with it from a design and time commitment perspective as well.

    Absolutely agree.

Coldharbour > Starter island > Choice to stay or go on.

Agree.  It is very poorly done IMO.  Seems like a step in the wrong direction.

This seems to be one of those times when getting what people ask for bites them in arse... now I hate the starting parts of the game and it was tollarable before the changes.. to much crying about things is making the game suck... just my opinion..

    Yup.

Says right in the Beta invite Imperial AND Explorer packs are active for participants, so you can be any race in any alliance.

Sounds like you just clicked on the race and AD was already selected, so you ended up in AD.

100% agree with you.  The starter island island needs to be default with an option to skip if like.  Make sure to /feedback it.   Maybe just maybe Zenimax will listen.  Your not the first person I've seen say this.

Past: EQ, EQ2, DAoC, SWG, WoW, LotR, VG, WAR, GW, GW2, Rift
    Present: The Elder Scrolls Online
    Future: Everquest Next

This change was a very bad move !

You spawn in the main city, fluent story gameplay is destroyed and you are confused where to go next.

A single quest leads back to the beginning Island but it doesnt fit really into the story and it is just one quest out of other ones after you spawn in the town.

Bad decision and it shows not everything what player demand is a good decision.

The same counts for the missing weapon choise after the prison !!!! wtf is this, you can only choose a 1h weapon.

So everyone was running around with swords and later riding on white horses....lame.

PLEASE do a /feedback ingame so they notice people are not satisfied with this change.

    Definitely.

I hope during the next two weeks they realize this and hopefully correct this.

I understand what you're saying but it isn't really the option to skip that is the problem in my mind it's the WAY they have implemented it that is the issue.  Most of the people I have seen talking about this, like myself, aren't telling them to remove the option in general, but to change it so that it makes more sense by starting on the starter islands and then having the option to skip on to the mainland from there.

I think they deleted the weapon rack because there was a very very serious bug attached to it. They might bring it back once it gets fixed.

    http://www.reddit.com/r/elderscrollsonline/comments/1z4j4s/youre_stuck_how_to_beta_around_the_clock_quickfix/

WARNING! Do not put your first quest weapon, the one you get off the weapon rack, into your bank. Your bank is shared among all characters in your account. So if you create an alt, the game will think it has the quest weapon available to it and you won't be able to proceed out of the prison. If you delete all of your characters, the game still thinks the starter weapon is in your shared bank and you'll never get out of Coldharbour.

Seriously people, If you did any kind of reading or even listening to the MAIN quest guy " The Prophet " ( also known as expensive ass voice actor they shelled out dough for so maybe give him a listen.) the second you get dropped in your main city he is standing right there and tells you where to go for the starter island.... (cough cough perhaps the docks even if you didn't listen to him.)

also the weapon thing lasts maybe 20 minutes TOPS before you upgrade, buy another, or find something better...

Why do you care that when YOU ARE ESCAPING FROM A  PRISON, that you don't get to choose your weapon. If I told you to break out of prison where you are wearing rags eating a wedge of old cheese and gave you a sword would you be like " WTF BRO.. can I get a staff maybe, I'm trying to get that staff skill level grind and missing that extra 5 minutes is really going to turn me off from playing the game.... you know, the whole thing, forever."     -_-

I don't want to sound like an asshole all the time, but 90% of the gripes I see in these forums are about the kind of stuff that doesn't even bother you if you take the time to actually immerse yourself in the game you might end up buying or already have bought.

    That is all.

Yes I agree, it is the way they implemented it that sucks.. I mean really sucks... They may as well throw it out and just start you at the main cities at this point.. It just blows me away that a dev team can go so south on something... SMH...
