This is the only game for me that has managed to capture my imagination, and make me want to continue playing, and exploring it's world/universe, in the history of all games.

I cannot say the same for many other MMORPG's that i have tried and all have fallen after only a few short months.

I began playing Eve Online 2 days after release, and i have never looked back. Extra content is delivered every few months, and large expansions delivered frequently enough to not be overwhelmed. Oh and all the expansions are free.

It is totally free form, you can do whatever you want to do, with no exceptions.

The only thing i can say against it, is that it does not really matter what starting race/character you create, as all races can fly each others ships and use each others modules, by training the appropriate skills.

For example if you created a character with attributes more suited to learning Science and Technology skills, you can still learn combat and PvP skills, it will just be at a slower pace than a character created with attributes more suited to combat. But then you have the option of plugging in implants that boost your attributes anyway.

It's not perfect, but then the 8.3 review rating it got, reflects that.

No, I don't think Eve Online deserves the hype it has recieved.

Like many other MMOG's, Eve lacks the content and interactivity that only a few have been able to touch apon. What they did get right was the lack of holding the players hand and saying " This is what you have to do, nothing else." You have freedom to do what you will (with in the games bounds of course) which is a huge plus in my book. The open skill system is great and is done well in allowing the player to focus on other things, not the skill grind.

Over time it starts to feel bland and boring, mining is only so fun to watch, and bouncing from one system to another can be very time consuming. In my experience, I spent just as much time waiting as I did playing. I could walk away and make dinner, come back 40 minutes later and still have jumps to make into the next systems.

Anyways, I'm not going to turn this into an anti-eve rant, cause I do like the game, just not to the extent of giving it a bloated hype.

It's fun at first, but quickly became the most boring MMOG I've ever played.....by a long shot.

EVE does have it's issues, and the way the game is designed, it is not geared toward solo players. However, once you get in a corporation (like a guild), and start doing cooperative play, the game is a BLAST!

EVE isn't perfect, but I think the score earned in the review was appropriate and well deserved.

EvE has an incredible complexity to it and really a unique approach to many things within the game.

That being said, it suffers from several problems which I feel rate it less than an 8 out of 10.

    • Skills. It's fantastic to have so many but it's a bit over the top. "Shield Upgrades", "Shield Operation", "Shield Management", "Tactical Shield .....". That's too many skills to do essentially the same thing. Each skill requires an extreme amount of time to get to a reasonable level. Rather than require such a large time sink for each skill just to make your ship work, lower the time requirements for the higher skill levels and instead introduce a maximum amount of skills per character. A new character should be able to catch up to one of the original characters within 8 - 12 months time but as it stands that's simply not possible.
    • Security status. It's far too restrictive. Personally I think 0.3 - 0.0 space should be considered free-for-all territory, no penalties whatsoever for combat. Chalk it up to "natural phenomena" or something, signals simply do not make it to Concord. This would encourage more combat and group formations for mining etc.
    • Communications jammer. There'd need to be restrictions, but this would block Concord communications within 30km or so for maybe five minutes. Lets you go free-for-all without security penalties in 0.4 - 0.6 zones. Obviously there'd be large restrictions. like one use every 30 minutes or so.
    • Travel time. Waaaaaaay too friggin long. Introduce wormholes or something else to let you hop between major planets (like the prime planet of each race). Nothing should be more than 20 jumps away if you've clicked the "shortest route regardless of security" option. The game should be fun enough and quick enough that you don't get up from the keyboard unless you want to.
    • Combat. It's not quite interactive enough with the guns. I'd love to be able to aim some time or to take manual control of my ship (more than click-click).

That's it from the top of my head.

Exactly what I thought. Gave it 18 months of my life & boy do I wish I could ask for them back!

one of the only MMORPG's tjat jas kept me for over 3months. I have been playing this for over 1 year now, and will continue to do so for a very long time.

I have had the opportunity to play MANY of the MMORPGs that are out there. I found most boring because it was the same basic design using the same basic theme. City of Heroes was a refreshing twist but the game grew stale and felt limited after about 6 months. Eve on the other hand seems to get better as it goes.

Others talk about the game getting boring, the game just opens more after about every 3 months.  Eve deserves to be considered in the ranks of Total Annihilation, Civilization and Doom for change the way we look at gaming.

Mabey not the top rating but still high. The only bad part about it was the downtime.

I've been playing Eve for 18 months and while there are some areas that need attention desperately (research and the market) I can still log on and discover some new aspect or use of items each time I do go online. Moreover Eve is what you make it - you are not forced down any path just to be able to compete. So an 8.3 is about right though with some of the public remarks made by the devs as to what they are expecting to do with CCP now being to hire more people this should, in a few months, be on the low side of its actual rating as new content comes into the game.

I played 6 months, then I gave up... Its nice, but galaxy is very big and ships fly very slow. In the end when you through all the perks when you have to mine, since mining is the best money giving action - and especially if you play solo - then you can die from boredom. Its more fun in guild, but even if you go to do some mission together, and you all have battleships and 1-2 of you get owned, you have to spend another few weeks after then to get another battleship. Its incredible how long you have to "WORK" to be able to have 20 minutes of fun... image

It has a small market, amazing game but only appeals to a few.

Most like fantasy and with an actual character to control rather than a ship and a avatar

I've been playing eve now, on and off, since it went gold.... It's the only MMORPG that I keep going back to. Yes it has it's down sides.... for example: The utter reliance on Corps and Allainces to get anything of the rarer minerals, I'm willing to take risks in 0.0 but not at the cost of joining an Alliance.

Mining is boring but nessaccary and combat has improves 100 fold since release. The lag in large fleet combat or in the heavily populated areas is actually less than it was but it's a major pain.

Content is growing all the time and it's this and the overall community that keeps bringing me back from other MMORPGs.

I actually payed to play EVE once but never got hooked.

The initial tutorial is simply too long boring and a bit complex.

The Music is great, the graphics are good, the UI is too complex (I know it has to be this way, but for a new player its simply too complicated)

It deserves a good rating anyways.

i love it because of its realism and the ability to do whatever you want. you aren't tied to the storyline. on the other hand it IS geared toward a certain audience, so its not going to appeal to the masses. Also with eve you cant really compare it to other MMO's because it breaks the mold in many aspects. for example: the Eve universe is COMPLETELY player driven. whatever you do will have some effect on the world around you.

    Wich game to vote ...

difficult choice here. well I will do some criter to choose what to vote.

    1st Accessibility of the pvp
2nd Varriety of the pvp (possibility of the pvp, and hability to change easely).
    3rd impact of the pvp.
4th Pvp goodies (hey what did I won ?)

1st, well in this category I will say that I will put 1st GW, 2nd Eve, 3rd Daoc.
Why DAoC in 3rd ? You have just to wait too long to have a lvl 50 char for the real pvp, the one where you have an impact. Acessibility is also the impact of a young guys on a team... lvl 30 in a team of 50s ? useless, no way that someone with lower level is helpfull in a team.
2nd Eve, because you need 2 week to be pvp efficient, even if it means in a cruiser, you can have an impact in the pvp since that moment, in a team, even if you won't be the guy who led the win, with a good setup even a support one or ew one you help... A good vessel whatever the ancienty you are is still a good vessel with 5 month or 1 mont behind you. 1 and half month to go with the big boys.
1st GW, well you can start lvl 20, a good build is not too hard to unlock. No way to compare, pvp is really easy to do. 2nd day and I got a good healer setup. I helped usefull in my outfit... What more to say ?

    2nd varriety same as before.
Why Daoc in third ? Well because yes you got multiple way to play in Daoc... but switching = create a new pseudo, so no way to change radicaly your gameplay in pvp. pvp style in daoc is led by the skill you choosed and the class you got. Switching class and you have to wait some month before being efficient, switching skillpoint is nearly impossible (there is a way, but it's hardway).
2nd Eve, 1st because of the skill tree (wich is enormous), and the hability to switch ship with different race with no problems. And because you can choose to change your gear for example switching from a hard eating raven to an electronic warfare scorp, in exactly 10 sec. possibility are infinite ... But the problems still is that you need the skill to switch. Wich take some times
1st Guild wars, switching ? You just need to create a new char... Or even better, just switch the comp you got in the pannel 8 comp, what you choose is what you play, fire ele-> air ele, 5 sec to switch the skillpoint, 1 min to choose your 8 skills ... easy as hell. You can play even by switching skills lot of gamestyle.

    3rd impact of the pvp.

Well I'll explain from third to top.
3rd Guildwars : Yeah you won the kings tomb. we are king of the world !!! Now what do we get ? You get the sovereignty for your continent. Soverignty is really not significative, well not as significative as taking territory in daoc or eve. Even worse, if you win a "guild battle", you win only ladder place. wich worth NOTHING. You are 1st and what ? You changed the face of Tyrie ? Your mates from your region are uber gratefull for you ? No you are nothing from them, just one of the thousands of player who got hall and cape... Not really that satisfacting eh ?
2nd DAoC, well sorry for you but winning territory in DAoC, is not as important as striking the world economy. Make the tech II price raise the top of the edge. blockade the tarde way = problems in the near future in the market ... While taking the relic from DAoC, is just some bonus in futur pvp. Just that, is it so important ? The sovereignty of abyss, is hell important I know, but well, do that have an impact on your day to day shopping ? No sorry.
1st Eve, pvp = you win or you don't fight. Winning soverignty on a station, it's 100 billion of isk instantly won, it's a new base. You harrass enmy ? Well when you strike hauler or miner in the empire people got fear, people are angry, and people will try whatever they can to leave this war, bleeding the alliance.

    4th Well same as before.
3rd gw, you don't win anything personnaly, except a few point to unlock comp. And if you are really lucky lot of cash that means nothing at all in this game where you can buy anything.
2nd DAoC, because you win personnaly only some realm comp that are yes usefull. But you need to bash lot of people to be able to be able to get one.
1st Eve, you shot this Tech II inty... congratulation, now take your time and see all those tech II modules you just won. You killed the indy, what he hauled, even if it was 100 mil worth of stuff or even this 30 mil cargo expanders is yours also. You win, you get CASH, wich worth lot. Or even better gear for yourself.

Well. I voted Eve. now you know why

You have no money to buy it and guildies have their own problems, so tell me please how you gonna get another battleship if yours was destroyed and you preliminary didn't have enough money to buy the best insurance, imagine you have insurance that will cover 30%.

So, lets here how you gonna get the rest 70% of the money needed to purchase new battleship?

Ok, i played EVE, and will be playing when i get the money,... i liked it becouse it isnt like many other mmropgs, orcs, knigths, mages ect.  Skilling is good, and this game isnt all about lvls, you need to work hard to be something and someone, you cant earn lvl 100, and have respect, (hourles killing monsters),....

The greaphics are very good, and i like the jukebox, listening music while doing something,.. And while i playing so many thing goes threw my head, that other mmropgs dont encurage it...

I think it deserv the rating, but it would be even cooler to be able to land on a planet, explore it, be able to walk on the station, and have like BARs, ppl could drink and talk and so on,...something are missing, but its still the only mmropg that makes not sleep  image

No way do I believe that EVE deserves to be at the top.

It's nothing but battle of the spreadsheets with floating balls.

And when I last played the simple graphics they had didn't even work. The fire blast coming out of my ships rocket kept going through my ship. With what little graphics they have in the game I kept thinking they could at least fix that.

Eve-Online is what every SF fan has ever wanted, something to put their imagination into without ejecting their brains or aesthetics. CCP have got it right........amen

    EVE rocks!

Sure there are some problems with the game, but what game doesn't have them?

There's no grind in EVE. There's no hand-holding guiding your every move. There's no other game I can think of that gives you the freedom of choice that EVE does.

Training skills that allow you to use better items continues even after you log off.

Travel is the biggest drawback as it is slow... but, for the realism aspect, space is vast and travel should be slow to a degree.

This game has more depth than can be imagined, but it has to be looked for because it's not obvious at first. The markets are player driven, regional conquest is player driven, in fact just about everything you do in the game can have an effect on another player, be it building, trade, mining, PvP, etc.

The key is to find a corp and get involved.
