Multiple Roles per Character?

syntax42syntax42 Member UncommonPosts: 1,385

I like MMOs which let me build my character the way I want.  I also like MMOs which let me respec to fit a new role without having to spend a lot of in-game money or any real money to do so.  I am not as much of a fan of games where if you start as one class, you are stuck with a certain style of play unless you level up another character.

Could anyone suggest a few more games with flexible class systems?

The Secret World  --  The class system was great, but combat was poorly designed and animations felt a little off.

World of Warcraft  --  They eventually gave everyone the ability to switch between two specs.  I am not a fan of the game though.

Champions Online  --  Great class system, but Perfect World stopped developing for it and is milking the game until it dies.

I forgot about that one.  I do like their class system, but it doesn't achieve what it should.  Instead of having a lot of viable specs, only a few specs are viable and half the souls are considered useless.  This leads to the next reason I stopped playing that game.  I like to play melee characters in heavier armor.  I tried the Warrior, but their tanking specs are all based on flashy magic effects.  I tried the Cleric but their melee DPS specs are either based on a pet system or have more magic in it than hitting stuff.

I'm not usually this picky, but I've tried most of the MMOs out there and I'm running out of options on finding a game to stick with for the long-term.  I know what I don't want in my MMOs, and most of them have at least something I can't stand.

Achaea - Can change your race / class at any time for a gold fee (high pop, RP based)

King's Road - Can switch between Warrior / Mage / Archer classes and level up each class individually on the same char. (high pop, grind/loot based)

Eldevin - Can respec into an entirely new class by resetting your talent tree points. (low pop, Runescape clone)

I also love freely building my characters, and I must say you missed a game from the list of the best candidates, which are indeed TSW, CO and Rift (though I don't really agree on PWE left CO in the dark).

The missed one is STO. On ground there's not much freedom (you can only tip the balance within the limits of your Away team), but in space you can be whatever you want. Just simply board on an another ship, assign the right bridge crew and you're on a different role already. You can do that any time for free of charge or respeccing.

Not to mention with the BOff training system you can cherry-pick the skills you want to use from the BOff skill list, similar to TSW's Wheel. Not as free as TSW, you need to promote your Officers ("level them up") and then find the right tutor, but it's still a nice system.
