Why not make a good one?

Baffling really.

It's subjective. Devs think they are making good ones. Many players think they are good ones.
Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.
  • Allow me to explain...

Dev #1: Yo dev #2, I have an idea for a mediocre MMO.
Dev #2: Why would I want to make a mediocre MMO? And by the way, my name starts with a capital D.
Dev #1: Because we'll sell a lot of boxes initially and get hates on a lot on forums, Dev #1!
Dev #2: Sweet! Let's do it.

The game then sells a lot of boxes initially, players hate on the devs on forums and within a year 90% of the servers are gone because everybody except a few players quit.

I think there are a lot of good MMO's out there depending on what you like. If you find them all mediocre than perhaps you're just tired of the genre and need a break.

Ever tried to create an MMO?

    Try, and you'll find out.

Or maybe the genre is the victim of a Damage Over Time wound and is hardly recognizable from what it started out as?

Funny thing is most Devs and Players NOW wouldn't play a MMORPG from years ago so who's lost and needs to find somewhere else to go?

As another Poster said above... it's a subjective thing.

Current MMO's are like the delta force or wolfstein era of games the MMO market needs thier BF 1942, MoHs and CoD to push the quality and fun up.

Because taking a chance is  very risky and if you have a house, a family and a well-paying job you are not going to gamble all that on a risky untried MMO format when sufficiently pleasing mediocre mush will do. Sure, if the risky venture pays off you'll be a legend in the minds of a few internet people whom you'll never meet (until they tire of even the cool, new thing and hate you again when they bombard their way to end game by overplaying it to death and have no more content to keep them tweaked).

Put simply, being part of making an anodyne game which ticks all the tried and tested boxes isn't going to win you any prizes. It also isn't going to make it hard for you to get another job whereas being part of an expensive cock-up built on dreamy ideas of what one 'thought' would make a nice game but in reality went tits up due to impracticality of implementation may make it impossible for anyone else to hire you again. I wish more Developers took risks for my pleasure but I can't blame them too much for not wanting to take that risk.

pretty much because it's a billion dollar industry that boomed a few years back, and like anything that people can make a quick buck from it gets flooded with trash. now us gamers are stuck wading knee deep in tons of crappy mmo's being pushed out, including the browser genre.

Hence why every few months we see companies shutting down 3-4 failed mmo's . the economy is busted and players/companies can't toss money around like they used to. I know myself I refuse to pre order anything since TSW / SWTOR days. As a business owner I know exactly what they are going through..

the game that got me into mmo's was EQ2 and I gladly subbed to that for about 6 years. which is why I am not doing anymore crowd funding/kickstarter BS ,but I will roll the dice once more when EQN comes out and am willing to pre purchase it right off the start line by putting faith in Sony and hoping EQN keeps me pulled in like EQ2 did for so long.

I passed up ESO after a few beta weekends.. I will not be buying wildstar either. money is too tight these days but I will drop a lot of cash on EQN when it launches.

So for now I've gone back to Rift.. i'm "entertained" by it I guess you can say ..plus ATM it is about the only f2p mmo that doesn't restrict the hell out of you..

few weeks back I fired up SWTOR and got a message that XP was restricted due to not being a paying customer.... what the hell is that?
