Obsidian Entertainment has announced that it has entered into a publishing partnership with Paradox Interactive to bring Pillars of Eternity to RPG fans later in 2014. Paradox will take of distribution and marketing aspects of the game while leaving complete creative control with Obsidian.

SAN FRANCISCO — March 18, 2014 — Obsidian Entertainment, the developer of Fallout: New Vegas and South Park: The Stick of Truth, today announced that they are entering into a partnership with Paradox Interactive to launch their upcoming role-playing game (RPG), Pillars of Eternity.

Pillars of Eternity, an RPG inspired by classic titles such as Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment, was funded via Kickstarter in late 2012, raising $4.5 million through both backer pledges on Kickstarter and Obsidian’s own website. Feargus Urquhart, CEO of Obsidian Entertainment, stated that every dollar raised through the crowdfunding campaign will be spent solely on the game’s development.

“This game would not have happened if not for the passion and generosity of our backers, and their faith in us to create the game they wanted,” said Urquhart. “How we are developing Pillars of Eternity has not, and will not be, changed; we will deliver the game we promised to our backers, and we will deliver it this year. Having Paradox as a partner, with their expertise in independent games like Pillars of Eternity, lets us put all of our focus on making an incredible game.”

Paradox will assume key marketing and distribution responsibilities for the title, which will support Obsidian by allowing them to concentrate entirely on development.

“When we signed this partnership we called it two independent players in the games industry supporting each other to stay independent by doing what we do best,” said Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive. “The fans backing this game—many of us included—are looking forward to a classic RPG as envisioned by the designers at Obsidian, and that’s exactly what they’re going to get.”

Obsidian and Paradox have published a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page for Pillars of Eternity backers, including further details on the new partnership, and on backer rewards, which will remain unchanged.

I personally cannot wait until this and Torment comes out. CRPGs of old (BG, BG2, IWD, Planescape, ect.) haven't had anything to compare to since maybe...Neverwinter Nights, and that's a BIG maybe. It's kinda sad that it's taking Kickstarter to fund games like this, but regardless, I'm happy they are. The 2 most funded games on Kickstarter are CRPGs and that just goes to show publishers, there is a huge market out there for games like these.

Obsidian are a great company that deserve all the success in the world, the game looks great for the type of rpg it is. Unfortunately for me, those aerial view rpg's don't interest me, but I wish em all the best!

RPG with the tech and talent of 2014, but the style of the golden age of CRPGs.  What's not to like?

    I agree. I really want a multi-player co-op fantasy game in 1st or 3rd person view like a fantasy Borderlands 2 type.

I love Paradox Interactive so this is a case where I don't have any warning flags flying with the stated partnership. I can't say I feel that way about other publishers.

Had to add another digital download of the game as the wife saw me looking at it as said one word, "gimme". She loves her party based RPGs!

And people say you shouldn't put your money into Kickstarter projects, pssh!! Sorry, but I don't think I can go wrong with the $25 I spent here.

So, does that mean it'll be released buggy, unoptimized, and unfinished like the majority of games published by Paradox? I hope not, but I've sworn off Paradox for that very reason. Their quality control is some of the worst in the business, hands down. I'd even go so far as to call them the indie equivalent of EA; as they push through a ton of complete crap.

I love Obsidian though, so we'll see.
