Poll - how would you rate ESO's marketing / PR campaign?

Wildstar didn't really resonate with me, but I've got to hand it to them when it comes to their marketing campaign.  Awesome videos, tons of information released frequently, dev play sessions all over the place - it seems like a world of difference compared with the ESO tactic from what I've seen.  From my experience, I honestly don't know if I've seen such a big name mmo with such a quiet and inactive marketing campaign.  It seems there is an official video maybe every month or so, some occasional info that comes out through Facebook, random interviews here and there, etc.  It seems for ESO a big deal is when an Ask Us Anything is released which is pretty sad.  Truthfully,  the vast majority of hype for this game could be attributed to the fans and all the media coverage for it during beta weekends - definitely not to Zenimax.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I do plan on playing ESO at launch even though I don't think it's perfect by any means.  Having said that, I think it's easily one of the most inactive, disengaged, random, information lacking, and poor marketing pushes for a AAA mmo I've ever seen.  What are your thoughts?

I'd say pretty good. Could be better, but they have done much better than the others I have seen launch recently.

    Currently Playing: ESO and FFXIV
    Have played: You name it

Googling ESO a lot, i get a lot of advertisements for eso..

but then, i allready bought the game

and they are not reaching people this way that never showed any interest in eso, but are potential customers..

i donth think google advertisement is the smart way to go for games..  You need to reach new people, not the same old ..

I love the game itself, but the marketing has been lazy and terribad.

I think they've done a pretty good job, judging from where things started to where they are now.

I don't think we've seen anything yet, wait till the console launch ads start rolling across the TV.

It looks the game may actually sell quite well, despite the terrible marketing and horrendous PR !

ZOS team members have made contradicting statements in interviews (cashshop or not ?), have flip-flopped over content (faction race locks ?), have mumbled and fumbled over game features (GUI API for add-on's ?), have made unexpected changes at the last minute (starter islands and tutorial ?) and generally looked like well-meaning amateurs.

Luckily, their talents as game developers far outstripped their marketing savvy.

ESO will be living proof that a great game does not need massive hype to succeed. It proves itself by delivering superior gameplay, not by just promising it.

Are you speaking generally (Abysmal like 99% of all other MMO advertising)

Or among MMO advertisement (Average. I've seen as much in the MMO players circles about it as I have any other game coming out.)

'Sandbox MMO' is a PTSD trigger word for anyone who has the experience to know that anonymous players invariably use a 'sandbox' in the same manner a housecat does.

I said mediocre. It's not really an intrusive marketing campaign, and I haven't seen ESO ads all over my search bars, but I don't know that it's really reaching out to the people who don't constantly check for MMO news. For the most part the only time I've seen anything about the game is when I've actively sought it out, or an article showed up on the front page here.

Horrendous marketing campaign but then again it doesn't matter and i doubt they care very much since anything with "Elder Scroll" slapped on it will sells millions and millions of boxes even if it sucks.

    It sells itself.

I haven't come across any marketing/pr/adverstising. I don't even know what this game is all about ;D I recently pre-ordered it because it is a TES game and now I can't wait to try it. The idea of a new TES game makes me giddy!

I would say pretty weak but I am wondering if they are going to save 'marketing money' for the console release.MMOers tend to know everything (sometimes too much) before it goes public and in general.

Consolers sad creatures that they are, need more of a push.

TV and gaming centers is a good wait to shake them up a bit.

I can't vote because I honestly haven't seen ANY marketing at all apart from ads on the official site.

Considering Marketing is basically nothing more than getting the word out on your product, in that department they've done great, everyone knows about ESO. Now PR on the other hand, that's a different story.

Honestly its excellent in the sense that they really are not trying to over hype it like a lot of earlyer (last 2ish years) mmos have like WAR, SWTOR, to name a few. not over the top but just right imo

I give it a solid mediocre. I plan on playing and despite some flaws, I've grown quite fond of the game. But, I don't think they've done a very good job of getting their message out. I think they've done a much better job communicating with the beta community and reacting to that feed back than they have communicating their message to the rest of the gaming community-at-large.

It's a "Back end loaded" PR campaign with only nuggets of information doled out prior to the late NDA lift. It's unusual in this genre that usually does it the other way.

Maybe they didn't need to promote so much going by the number of hits it gets here compared to everything else...shrug.

I don't know.  It seems like they took a game that a lot of us weren't playing and turned it into a game that a lot of us can't wait to play.  Figuring that they had their single player guys at hello, that's not a bad feat really.
