SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

ArenaNet and the Guild Wars 2 team have announced that the next Guild Wars 2 update, set to launch on April 15th, will be focused on enhancing and overhauling game features. The team has a plan in the works to incrementally reveal information over the coming weeks, but did start the ball rolling with the news that the trait system is set for a complete overhaul.

ArenaNet, developer of the acclaimed Guild Wars franchise, today announced the first-ever Guild Wars 2® release that is focused exclusively on bringing exciting new updates to in-game features. The Guild Wars 2 “April 2014 Feature Pack,” slated to release on April 15, will introduce a sweeping range of new systems and feature enhancements to the game. The focus on features sets the stage for new content designed to upgrade the experience in a wide variety of areas, from quality of life to the way players enjoy various aspects of the game.

ArenaNet has organized a rollout campaign to reveal everything players can expect in the “April 2014 Feature Pack”. Between now and when the release launches on April 15, ArenaNet developers will deliver a series of videos, live streams, blog posts and articles that unveil and detail every feature and what it means to the game. The rollout will give the entire Guild Wars 2 player community the opportunity to fully understand and even engage in dialogue around each new upcoming enhancement.

    Very good change actually.

I would like to see them remove the tie in to certain weapons on certain trees though.  Makes you feel too pigeon-holed.

Think they'll add a Trinity trait line? People would maybe return then.

No trials. No tricks. No traps. No EU-RP server. NO THANKS!

I don´t know why people dislike and don´t play Gw2. I played one time Gw1 and idk it was not funny so i cancel and after Gw2 released my friend don´t stop talking about Gw2 he comes everyday with "Cmon buy Gw2"... I was playing WoW and after my Gametime i test Gw2 and omg i never played so a nice mmorpg it the best mmorpg for me, with every 2 Weeks Updates where can u find this ? I know the Updates are short but its better to wait 2 Months for an update and rush in a half day...

And this Update is the highlight for me !

This is really good news, and it is only part of the update. I'm very excited to see what else they are going to do.

The changes sound pretty good. But proof is in the pudding upon its release.

The new unlocking system seems like a rehash of old content that you've done a thousand times before.

The change in trait points how ever. That's going to suck for those leveling up. Good thing I've acquired a lot of tomes of knowledge for when ever they decide to introduce a new class.

This is something that will make the game that much better having to go the books was not a bad feature but having to ether buy or go out and get the trait unlocks sounds really awesome and fun. As for the level change on when you unlock them by lvl 30 a player will have enough gear to make up the difference and might make it a little harder to level up but only by a marginal points difference. So this looks really good but will have to see when its launched.

All of this sounds well, but you can't help but wonder what it's building up to in the end, especially some changes like items unlocking traits and alike. I hope they're not getting ready to expand microtransactions in some unsavory fashion. I'm watching you, ANet.

That's always =possible=, but it's not very likely, since that's definitely heading uncomfortably into the P2W zone.

Also, while you use items to unlock traits, there's also the option of spending gold to unlock it for people who don't want to do the challenges.

It's basically just a way to allow you to earn horizontal improvement of your character that's more interesting than merely plunking down gold (Although they're keeping that an option for people who don't want to bother, like say people who specialize in PvP, or who are on their 50th alt or whatever. :P ).  Something they've been talking about for a while, actually.

More interesting horizontal improvement methods is good, not a bad thing.

Lot to take in with this update according to the official notes on the GW2 page. I suppose we need to see how it will be implemented.  The part about searching the world for major trait guides will appeal to those players who wanted something like that from GW1.  For me that was never a big deal but I'm sure I can live with it.  Not passing judgement atm but will wait and see. Will it bring players back who have abandoned the game?  Not sure.  There are other games launching soon and with the attention span of the average gamer ,it seems once you lose them you need to smack them across the face to get them to pay attention again.

    Dear Anet dev team,

Thank you for this update. I am very excited about this change.

    Please also add:

    1. Ability to save a build template for ease of use just like in GW1.

    2. Change the overall look and feel of the trait panel/window (current theme does not look attractive at first glance!).

I haven't played in months.  This update got me interested enough to log back in (and let's face it, playing a game for nearly a year straight might make you want to take a break).  Wow, I can't believe I ever stopped playing.  Maybe it's something to do with all the F2P garbage I've been giving a try since around Christmas.  Probably makes you appreciate a well designed game lol

Mmm liking this change, think I will be going back in too - especially since it won't cost me a penny!

    rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D

I hope they NEVER do that - period.  If they put that in I know many current players would leave.

Haven't played for a while since I've been studying a lot and working on a side project close to my heart... but damn, these changes look juicy.

The way I read it from Dev blog, new master traits will allow your Elementalist to heal a lot more, your Guardian to have more health etc. Maybe it's not trinity that we know from other MMO games like WoW, but it's pretty damn close.

Also, I'm not sure why would these changes bring people back? It's not like people left because they had to buy books to respec traits, while everything else was just perfect.

Give us Xpac with new zones/continents and classes and I will come back for sure.

Because they are changing the way you also get your traits. Like in GW1, you will have to hunt for them.

Not close at all - remember - unlike some games, in GW2 and GW1, there is NO uber build - each build has a weakness that can be used against them. In WoW, Rift, ETC. TANKS either absorbed or mitigated damage, not so in GW2. There will still be no full up just TANK spec for any boss.

More would probably leave than return, honestly.  Guardians having more health, etc. are nothing like being able to taunt or completely ignore damage for seconds at a time (ie: you cannot "tank" in GW2 because the game isn't designed that way), so it isn't going to happen regardless.. but GW2's differences are its strongest feature, I don't think they'd see a surge in users if they started trying to mimic everyone else.  Let Trinity games use the Trinity.

Wow, seems like all classes are getitng some cool traits here........except my main the engi.............seriously a defensive bubble around my supply crate and healing turret? My healing turret stays on the ground long enough for water field and then is exploded so doesnt mean anything to me.

Ugh I hope the dont totally screw my engi.

Now, now, don't be a Mr. Baity Pants.  I would hope most people, even those who were disappointed in the "hype" about GW2, have moved on or realized it's actually very well done for what it is.  Of course, that's as much an opinion as a negative one, but I'd rather say good things about the game and the people who AREN'T currently bashing it (you know, them being awesome people and all).

I do like getting a little reward for each level in the form of a trait point and skill point, however I can certainly deal with the new system since most of my chars are at or close to level cap.

What bothers is me is fact that ANet is taking away build options in favor of making idiots more effective:

With this system, spending traits will be much easier for new players to understand. Right now, there is the possibility for someone who doesn’t really know the system to spend 11 trait points in one line and 14 in another and wind up with a less effective build. As an added benefit, the trait panel will be much easier to understand and navigate.

And if I want to run 11 points in one line and 14 in another, I should be able to regardless of what's thought to be most effective.
