Latency is relative to distance anyway, unless your isp restricts connectivity for some reason. The only real 'issues' would be ones involving the hardware, in terms of rendering/framerate, which isn't related to latency anyway, although if your in Japan playing on a server in the USA, then latency of over 200 ms could affect gameplay, but that depends on the type of game, for a FPS certainly, but for most MMO's that are usually based on an expected latency of 100-200 ms anyway, not so much.
Furthermore, I think that this is the next big trend in MMORPGs. The industry as a whole has become rather stale. The MMO space needs a shot in the arm. It needs something new and interesting that works. I think (well done) VR could be just the thing needed to get people back into games like this again. Imagine playing in a sandbox world that looks and sounds real. Forget combat for a moment, and imagine only the element of exploration? Imagine how much more social these games will become.
The only question is, will EQN be designed with VR in mind? If achieved, seeminly meaningless tasks such as, walking from point A to B would become interesting and exciting. Imagine just walking through the woods and looking at the detail around you. Think about sailing across an ocean or exploring a cave. If anyone here has used the Oculus Rift, you'll know what I'm talking about.
Really good VR takes average and boring tasks and makes them amazing. It honestly tricks your brain into thinking you are somewhere you are not. It places you inside these games and at 60fps and in HD, it makes it seem very real.

Why would it?

No, I don't think it will be an issue.
