MMORPG.COM News: Warhammer Online = WAR

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

Based on information gathered both from the game’s newsletter and the advertising banner that is currently featured on the Camelot Herald - as well as a board posts made by Mythic President Mark Jacobs on Warhammer Alliance - it seems as though Mythic Entertainment’s most recent project, an MMORPG based on the extremely popular Games Workshop property, Warhammer, will be titled simply WAR or W.A.R. Up until now, the media has been referring to the game as Warhammer Online.

At no time has Mythic actually called their game “Warhammer Online”, a title that was first used by Climax Online, the company which originally intended to produce an MMORPG for this franchise. Climax’s version of the game was cancelled on June 6th, 2004.

From this point on, MMORPG.com will be referring to the game simply as WAR.

Aye, WAR. And yeah, it stands for something. :) There are a lot of smart people out there who have claimed to have figured it out. We haven't officially stated what it stands for quite yet though. :)

Theres a marketing jig for you!

At closer to title-release hold competition and first one to figure it out wins the very first seat to the beta?

What is the logic though ?

Surely if you have the rights to use a title such as "Warhammer" you would use the name in your game. I think anyone who hasnt spent the last 20 years living under a rock would recognise the Warhammer franchise as having a huge, devoted, long term fanbase. Why not capitalise on that ?

I guess people interested in this type of stuff might want to read the rest of this two month old news story here. (Mind you Warhammer Age of Reckoning, isn't the whole truth, the actual title is likely a slight variation of the news story's revealation.

    This news disappoint me.

But it prove Mythic is a bunch of proffesionnal and that they actually care a LOT.

By naming a game Warhammer Online, you would have to stick to the rules VERY closely.  By naming it WAR, it grants you more freedom.

I am still looking forward to try it, but it is not an auto-buy anymore, althought I am quite confident Mythic will actually produce a high quality game and that I will end up buying it.  (I did buy DAoC even if they didn't get to claims any monthly fee from me ever, nor any expension selling, gameplay was not appealing to a PvE grouper or a PvE soloer(I am both, in that order))

For those who think that mythic isn't going to use Warhammer, read what the mythic guy said, its W.A.R.  meaning that the letters stand for something.  W would logically stand for Warhammer, so they ARE using the name.  Sounds like they are using W.A.R. as a way to not confuse people into thinking its being made by somone else.

I just hope they get the chaos wastes done right graphically. The Warhammer world is large, a rather large undertaking. If the PvP or RvR is as good as DaoC's is, im stoked.

As a dedicated Warhammer player, I will have to try this game no matter the reviews. I've been playing warhammer for years, (i's 20 now I started when I was 15). Even being a grunt could prove to be intresting, but earning myself to a "hero" in the armies I repusent would be fun...

If the pull this off, the game could be legendary... but if the mess up, it'll be a dud.

I just hope they dont do PvP zones like they did in DAOC

The warhammer world is all one piece not split into continents, well some of it is but the major areas!!

I also belive Mythic really has thier work cut out for them since most true warhammer players are extreemly demanding. When you learn to paint miniatures and grow your own style it reflects how you percieve gaming as well.

It's good they gave it the acronym W.A.R.

Games Workshop fans will already know about the game so that's plenty of customers in the bag, regardless of what it's called.

For everyone else, think about what the words Warhammer actually means? - lots of peope haven't ever heard the term, other than menaing some kind of medieval weapon.

There's also sometimes a geek stigma attached to Warhammer - so using the acronym evoids that too, and hopes to be appealing to a wide range of people.

I think the acronym is good, and should please both GW fans and non-fans.

I agree with what someone else sais about having it as W.A.R might give them more freedom in how they do things verse it being simply Warhammer Online. I think Mythic will be fine. DAoC is really solid as a game, so I don't doubt W.A.R will turn out alright.
