Flying in ww2ol you feel like you are part of "the biger picture". It is not just about flying and shooting down other planes or bombing targets. The damage model feals more real as well. Firing at an enemy plane you don't know that x numer off seconds at y range will do z. You can be suprised. Some times they go down faster then you expect and some times they just refuse to go down. I love that. Also I like that there are no AI planes. If you see a plane in the air you know that you are facing a real pilot with real crew.
I've been involved with this game on and off since well before its release.
Rael is correct in his statement that you feel part of the "bigger picture". You feel that way even more with the latest release.
The combat isn't centered on the air war. Although flying against other fighters is certainly entertaining, it can not beat the rush of interdiction against ground forces. Knowing that the Tanks, Trucks, Troops, and AA guns you're strafing and bombing...while they run for cover...are going to directly impact their ability to "win" that battle is awesome. In this game, Air Power means something.
I have flown my plane sideways down city streets at rooftop level while tanks and troops battle back and forth. Kicking it level and making a run for the clouds with tracers splashing around my cockpit. Looping back and making a steep dive with guns blazing. No other feeling like it.
On release of this latest...I took off in a Havoc to try it out, playing for UK now, and headed for the Zeelands as the map showed the Axis having gained a port in the area. On the chat...Axis freighter in the area. I paired up with another Havoc that seemed to be on the same journey. As we got close to the target area, there was the frieghter...offloading troops and tanks just like the screenshots. Having never flown this plane, I fell in behind the other with me. It turns out he was crewed up as I saw bombs falling to the freighter below. Far enough off his tail, I witnessed the 2 splashes to the Jerries starboard and impacts on the ground at the port. Tanks burning at least but the freighter was still mobile. I closed in on the Havoc to wing for him. We swept around and started strafing the ground targets. We seperated some...I started to close in on him again when I saw the tracer fire from the freighter started knocking parts off the other Havoc. Fire...and a quick burst of smoke. He started to go in with that death spiral so famous in movies. I dove and made my strafing run. He hit me good. I made for the water but ended up crashing out.
If nothing else, the game is only 10 bucks and you get 30 days. If you enjoy Flight Sims, you're missing a good one.
Like the others said, you are part of a 'bigger picture'.
Actually blacksix, I was in a 109 supporting our ground forces and our freighters about a week ago around the Zeelands.
I love flying in ww2ol, as well as ground and sea. As Blacksix said, the combat isn't centered on the air war, but the air war plays a big part of how the map 'goes'.
And every once in a while, if your tired of flying, you could always take out a tank, infantryman or even a boat.
