I'm looking for something to play -- I started with eq back in.. '98, I think, moved to Daoc when it hit.. bounced from game to game since, if it's come out, i've probably played it -- including one-off games that didn't last like earth and beyond, Shadowbane (God I miss shadowbane), SWG, Ryzom, etc. As well as some of the bigger asian titles, RO, MU, DFO, etc.
and at this point i'm kind of.. burned out, None of the upcoming games make me that excited (Wildstar is fun, but is a little sluggish on my laptop, and honestly just have a hard time getting into ti (I 've been in beta for about a year now, try every month for a weekend or so, fail.) ESO... from what I saw of the early beta events is very.. eh.; Likewise, all of the games I seriously got hooked to, i've played to death, so i'm hoping to find something that i've either overlooked, or maybe I would have just glanced at and dismissed because it was bad -- but has improved.
Games I spent the longest on/enjoyed the most (in no particular order)
1.LOTRO (Quite during Mines, but was one of my favorites, tanking the balrog with a dress actually equipped non-cosmetic is one of my crowning MMO achievements.)
2.) CoH (Played from release until it died, had 11 characters at cap, First, and probably last game I seriously got into RPing in.)
3.) DaoC (Quit during ToA, but.. God frair has to have been my favorite healing class ever.)
4.) Vanguard (it's release killed it, but thre was so much innovation in this game.)
5.) EQ II (This one I stayed with mostly because my guild was awesome, quit during TSO, mostly due to the fact that.. because engine limitations it.. never really changes, equipment feels like reskins, thousand and thousands of AA all seem towards the same meta.. the system never gets shaken)
6. Rift (Again, guild, leveled, got server first on several experts, was server second on alsbeth by an hour... quit when TSL came out, just.. I dunno the fact that my characters were just one giant ball of macros makes combat decidedly.. boring)
7.) TSW (Quit before f2p release, but.. got my chosen build to full 10.4/10.4, and sit at 91% of the skill wheel, tried going back but.. it just feels like i've done everything worth doing.)
---------
The caveat: I'm currently broke, for at least a month or two, I can afford a months subscription (or equivalent in cash shop goodies), but I can't afford 200$ worth of expansions (Ruling LOTRO out); I've splaying marvel heroes lately, and I'm enjoying it, but.. it's falling to the ARPG curse, i've leveled the characters I want to level, gotten a good portion of their best gear.. and i'm just losing interest due to grind.
-looking- at SWTOR, since it apparently isn't terrible if you subscribe, but i'm weary, I don't think I got past 38 at release (mostly due to it being so grindy, or because I hated hoth, one of the two.), and I don't want to throw my one subscription at something that I may ragequit in a week due to hating it, or.. because the community is balls (... I play mmo's to play with people, not to play solo. Also why I quit neverwinter, level a character to 50, get gear.. no one wants you for anything because you aren't 14k GS and know every fight by heart.)
Doesn't help that the f2p mode is so restrictive it's hard to get a feel for where the game stands (2 quickbars? 3 loot rolls in dungeons -per week-? really?)
So yes, anything that I may have overlooked or may have passed up but has improved!

I was 8 when I started playing EQ; Some kids grew up around hair metal, I grew up around MMO's. XD I've got a college degree, am employed full-time, and have a fiance -- my gaming time has been cut down to 1-2 hours a day, but I try to get as much in as possible, hanigng on to the vestiges of my childhood and whatnot.
I wakfu'd a bit when it first came out, community seemed a little.. dead at the time (understandably) It improved any?
Y-yes? Large amount of bills, and a few tickets this month, I'm normally not broke, but currently am (thus the "at the moment")
Moreover, rift was released may 3rd; I was in college and had started my summer break by that point. I powerleveled to 50 in two days with no sleep, server firsts came from me being the 3rd defiant to 50; there were so few of us in the beginning that we naturally just grouped up and faceslammed experts all day, wasn't much competition since we were about two-days ahead gear-wise from most of the other 50's, our only competition was the guardians who'd powerleveled.

I wouldn't rule out LotRO, with HD they changed / revamped / f*cked (different point of views ) the traits, the skills, and in some cases the class mechanics too, so if you left around Moria (and with it before the f2p switch) it would seem like a new game to you. If you start over with a new character - guards are pretty easy now, I'd suggest warden if you like tanking - you could have a great 1-2 months during your way to the eastern gate of Moria. Not to mention if you put that 2 months subscription in it (-> 2x500 TP stipend) you can get Mirkwood from the stipend for free, which is good for an another few weeks of play.
Vanguard is good now (still a few bugs here and there) if you plan to play only for a few months - SOE will shut it down in the summer.
CoH is gone sadly, many folks switched to CO after Ncsoft closed it. It's not a perfect substitute but still it's a good game. Also it's pretty much free until the endgame, and it's also free after the cap if you don't mind the grind for Zen.
I agree on TOR and Neverwinter ("I play mmo's to play with people, not to play solo.") nice games but I too play them solo (ok, in Neverwinter I used to join skirms and dungeon delves when I'm in the mood. But mostly just playing the Foundry.)
TSW, if you're at 10.4 and an almost unlocked wheel, then it's either replaying the stories, or grinding scenarios, beside that it's indeed "just feels like i've done everything worth doing". The new Issues are great though, and cost only ~10 bucks. I admit they won't last for 2 months of play...

If you already have a Funcom acc from TSW, you could check AoC. With the f2p revamp last year the whole game is free (inventory is limited), except the Godslayer expansion but that only kicks in after you reach 80, which will take 1-2 months if you don't play massively. The population is good enough after the merges, and you could keep the $15's in your wallet
Just cutting to those two, the f2p conversion -actually- the reason I quit lotro, iirc, I had let my sub lapse for a couple months because I was focusing on CoH, came back when it went f2p to find.. I couldn't actually play most of my characters because despite having an account for at that point I believe it was like 2 years of subscribed time.. I was locked out of all of the original areas, because turbine "couldn't confirm if you owned the game or bought it after the f2p conversion", which just miffed me, i'd spent over 300$ on the game, and they wanted another 90$ for me to play past level 10 (or a sub); was just kind a kick in the face.
My issue with LOTRO is the sheer amount of investment it'd take -- i'm what, 4 expansions behind now? (mirkwood, isengard, rohan, helms deep, right?) assuming I picked up my warden or guardian (who were in moria) -- i'd hit all of those within a month, and I don't have enough for what, 80$ (100$ if I don't buy the quad-pack) outright, kind of an annoying content wall there, double so if I get hyped up from nostalgia and think i'm going to enjoy it, but burn out again after 3 weeks when the nostalgia wears off.
As for AoC, I played it for a while, it was.. very desolate, but server merges may have fixed that, i'll give it a shot and see.
Try Vendetta Online; I've been playing it since June 2003, and haven't been disappointed. Subscriptions have been relatively inexpensive: $10 per month, or if you have an Android phone/tablet or iOS tablet, $1 per month lite. There is a free 8 hour trial and the download is roughly 300 megs, so you really don't have much to venture initially.
What makes it great? I have some thoughts on that
If you end up wanting to get into it on a deeper level, here's a guide.
