[Column] Landmark: New Name, Slightly Different Game

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

It felt easier to call Everquest Next: Landmark just Landmark so as to significantly differentiate it from Everquest Next (EQN). Apparently, Sony Online Entertainment agrees, and has changed the name of it's craft-heavy version of EQN to, quite simply, Landmark.

    About time...

    /me calls dad.

    Dad: Hello?

    Me: Hi dad.

    Dad. Hi son!

Me: Are you going to play EverQuest Next Landmark?

    Dad: What is EverQuest Next?

Me: It's pretty much EverQuest 3.

Dad: Why do they call it EverQuest Next? That sounds pretty dumb.

Me: I agree. I have no idea.

Dad. So we're able to dl and play EverQuest 3?

Me: Not exactly. That game won't come out for a long time.

Dad: Then what game are you rambling about?

Me: It's called EverQuest Next Landmark.

Dad: Huh? I don't get it.

Me: It's a pre-launch builder for EverQuest Next.

Dad: I don't get it. So it's not EverQuest 3?

    Me: It is... sort of.

Dad: You aren't making any sense.

Me: It's a completely different game.

Dad: Then why is it called EverQuest Next (3)?

    Me: I don't know.

Dad: I knew your mother and I shouldn't have sent you to a community college. I kept telling her, "UNIVERSITY! UNIVERSITY!"

University probably wouldn't have helped... sometimes it skips a generation.

"What's in a name? A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet." - WS

Some people may not care about names, but Bart Simpson's response to the above quote was: "Not if you call it a fart."

And I agree with him (somewhat). Names have a tendency to pull you in, even before you know what you are getting into. EQN:L had to draw on me that I was probably going to see some old EQ references and I would be reliving some of my old worthwhile exploration days... But now I see Landmark for what it is: a building game... and apparently, that is all it will ever be.

Am I disappointed? Not in the least... I got to like building. Hard work, skill and determination, along with a little imagination and creativity really do wonders for feeling accomplished in that game. I go back to readapt and see the reviews and such. And to think there are still big chunks of the game that haven't been released yet!

So if "Landmark" is just a teaser for EQN, then what is the point of the game? There are a 100 other "Builder" game out there, so what makes this this game worth the bread needed to play it right now?

That is the thing we tried to tell everyone. It is a building tool to be like a dev.

EQN = the real game with destructable content.

Landmark = the building tool with almost the same content but can't be destroyed.

Another way to see it :

EQN = The mmorpg / sandbox version.

Landmark = Where the buildings and content are created.

Basically if you are in building stuff you will play Landmark and make contents for me that will play the EQN version of it where i destroy stuff and you make it for me. " Your base belongs to me " :)

Edit : also Landmark let you do the building in real time inside the same game that EQN is. Except like i said earlier you can't destroy the content the other players makes. But no rendering needed to see your content because it is done in real time inside the game. That is the difference with other building tools that the other games offer you, because this one is inside the game itself.

But also you can create content like chairs, doors, house, castle, mansion, etc.etc. and sell them inside of Landmark. But not in EQN. That is also why it is seperate from EQN to prevent scam issue's etc. And not all the things you build in Landmark will make it in EQN only the really good stuff that gets voted to go in will make it.

There is a discussion brewing on the official forums about this.

Quote from OP - "I am really pretty bothered by the severance of this game from the Everquest name and franchise."

OP has a point, there probably would have been less hubbub about SOE making a something called Landmark.

It's pretty hard to understand how someone could be buying into an alpha of an MMO and not be informed enough to know the difference. I guess SOE has data I don't have. I hope they do.

That's its far better at it than previous games?!?

When the first Halo was announced did you say "there are 100 other shooters out"?

Also, its F2P so there is no "bread" needed unless you want extras.

There's 100,000 MMOs out there, why bother making any new ones? There's billions of people in the world, why bother living? It can apply to anything!

I can't tell if people are trolling, or if they are genuinely this confused about Landmark (Beta)?  Go watch a video.  Better yet, I'm sure tons of players will be streaming this weekend.  Go talk to them.  If you're just trolling, keep trolling I guess <shrugs>.

I was in Alpha from the beginning and it was surprisingly many that totally had misunderstood what Landmark was all about, my guess was that they totally focused on just EQ Next Landmark and subconciously ignored all the information that said otherwise.

And that situation is not funny as some people where quite upset, others found they liked it and played it even if it was not what they had wanted or expected

The inability of the masses to actually read is amazing.  You expect some people to be really dense, or even borderline disabled naturally, but  I was quite taken aback when I started my business at just how many people that were clearly above average intelligence just wouldn't read... even if you put something in bold and large font.

I've picked many a great book just by reading the title, something everyone says not to do. Go figure.

There is so much more to Landmark. It is an mmorpg of its own.
