Enron .. the name that brought putrid oil to shores to kill off many unusual wildfire.....seriously bad thing to bring up, in any form of example.
ArenaNet had multiple fan sites, and some fans had accounts with the same name across them all (same PW too, or similar enough to crack). Fans that got ripped off complained, so you hearing their complaints made you think it was a major issue.
I had fan accounts, and a GW2 account, yet never had an issue.
If you never had a problem, it's likely because you practice good security. Most don't even know what security is .. and that is what keeps Internet Security folks employed. Realize that, and you win a Yoshi sticker!
I think ESO will be the perfect test case for proving which side has more weight. If you (representing the ArenaNet/NCSoft apologist side) are correct, then there should be a widespread hacking issue with ESO as well. Because ESO has many fan sites out there and people use the same account names. Do you really think people, in general, have changed their account/password habits since GW2? Doubtful. Which means that the same exact hacking issue that plagued GW2 should theoretically plague ESO as well. And ESO should be even worse since I believe there will be an even more massive influx of people in the first week or so than GW2's launch.
If there are some widespread hacking issues, then you can bet your ass that we will all hear about it. It will be in all the communities and the developers will be talking about ways to solve the issue, much like what happened with GW2. So the test is simple: If there are no widespread hacking issues, then you pro-Company folks should be eating crowe and probably reevaluate your position on this. If there are widespread hacking issues, then I will have egg on my face and actually think about putting more credence in ArenaNet's version of the truth. I mean, the variables should all be the same here if we're talking about individuals being at fault. The vast majority of players out there don't put much thought into making sure their accounts and/or passwords are always different. So, if you pro-company folks are correct in your thinking, then we should have deja vu all over again with a bunch of people crying about hacked accounts.

well last i checked it didn't.
I just installed swtor for the first time in a year and it does indeed check your ip address and emails you a one time password to use if it changes.

GW2 had one of the smoothest launches for me. Quests seemed to work and no crashes and pretty smooth queues. Of course, LotRO was the smoothest launch I had ever taken part in. From what I have read, there are some bugged quests still in ESO, which should have been taken care of before launch. I'm glad that you seem to enjoy it though. I was turned off from the beta and cancelled my pre-order.

So OP is one of those that let their GW account get compromised, as has been detailed earlier in the thread and is still so pissed at himself he simply HAS to troll GW2 at any opportunity?
Check.
For someone with such a wealth of mmorpg experience as the OP, I am very surprised he can't differentiate between a full launch and early access. I'm glad ESO seems stable and people are having fun but maybe wait till the game actually launches and is stable two or three days later before proclaiming it any kind of success OP.

right on, that is either new or i just don't remember that.
Samehere , I enjoied a pretty smooth launch in GW2, My account was safe, I consider it a very positive experience.
I am glad Teso is having a smooth launch too, means there is hope that companies are finally getting that launch days are important, let's hope most future launches are smooth.

Only if the largest ESO fan site gets hacked. Using the same user name and password everywhere is fine until one of the places leaks it.
Originally posted by Satarious I remember the first week or so, GW2 was absolutely riddled with accounts being hacked because of their pathetic security. Not only does ESO not have this problem at all, but this has probably been the smoothest launch to date (and I've played them all). Also, the quest bugs all seem to be resolved. Great job, Zenimax!
You seem to forget that Gw2 had larger player base at launch
Also those accounts were going to be hacked one way or the other, the hackers had user's e-mail and corresponding passwords. So yeah, don't blame the game for being stupid and use the same email/password combo everywhere. Other than that, 2 weeks in, Gw2 became the standard of account security.
Also don't confuse pre-launch with actual launch. Because I was playing in the Gw2 headstart and other than the fact the trading post was down and the karma exploit that some people abused and got banned afterwards, there were no other real issues. Also that exploit was fixed on day 2 while servers were still overheating because of the load. If you are trying to undermine ANet's level of professionalism you fail miserably really.
So don't blow this out of proportions fanboy. Play your game and don't talk shit about things you don't know.
And atm im so confident in Gw2's security that I can give my account/password combo for the game in this forum and none of you will be able to access my account. Yeah, IP locked and mobile authenticator locked
Also not long ago ANet forced me to change my password because someone somewhere has been trying the same password to hack an account. Yeah, freaking kudos for that.
OP is right though... GW2 has had the best launch of the whole history of MMORPGs so far, and so OP should rightfully use GW2 as the best launch comparison to date.
However, to know if ESO launch is as smooth as GW2 launch, we will have to wait a little bit longer (it's early access for now).
Also I found quite a few bugs already - and I've just reached lvl 7.

BEST Launch since ever, even though it hasn't launched yet.
He's played ALL the launches ever.
LYING about the GW2 launch.
Some of us who were actually at the GW2 launch, had no problems at all, knew lots of people who had no problems at all, played with guilds who had members who had no problems at all.... would like to call you out for lying.
I guess enjoying the game you like playing was too hard for you... you had to go online and behave in such a toxic way.

Well lets be realistic here.
The number of sales is not likely to be newsworthy......otherwise, it would be newsworthy, right?
Unless I mistaken, Zeni/Beth have been very quiet about the number of pre orders....if they had broken any kind of record (like GW2 for example) then the marketing team would have been all over it.

In before he comes back with a "Sorry I was enjoying playing ESO too much to answer your posts"
For me Guild Wars 2 and Lord of the Rings: Online stands out as the smoothest MMO launches I have ever experienced. Even though both games were filled with players they worked and was enjoyable to play without server crashes, broken content to any important degree or anything of the like.
I hope Elder Scrolls Online has the same smooth launch in four days. I don't think any of us gain anything by hoping for the contrary. We need the new standard to be: "Everything works right out of the box" and not make any excuses for companies shipping out broken games.
Since it was traced back to various sites, no, I don't think your argument holds much weight.
Any game with a huge following can be susceptible. GW2 had a younger, more naive following, and thus had many security risks (many were used to Blizzard protecting them, then they had a rude awakening).
TESO audiences are likely a tad older, on average, but that doesn't really make them any more safe .. if they don't practice account security.
So TESO has a more adapt following, thus far. Not to say they are exempt from "hacking".
Lol! Well, I can see that you're just going to blindly hang onto ArenaNet/NCSoft's twisting of the truth like a pit bull. No, all companies have the utmost integrity and it's always the "unwashed masses" fault. Should I even bring up Enron?
I'm not going to extend this argument since I know that there are too many entrenched NCSoft apologists out there. I know for a fact that I'm careful when it comes to internet accounts and suspicious phishing style emails. I've been using the web since its birth back in the 90s and never once had my account for anything hacked. So I will never buy into this nonsense that it was poor security on the part of individuals that caused this issue since it happened to me as well. I mean, this was literally the only time that I had my account hacked in the many years of using the internet. So as far as I'm concerned, there's two likely scenarios that caused this:
1) They had a major breach and thousands of accounts/passwords were stolen
2) The accounts were cracked since ArenaNet/NCSoft was lax on security (since they didn't even have a retry policy starting out)
Enron .. the name that brought putrid oil to shores to kill off many unusual wildfire.....seriously bad thing to bring up, in any form of example.

The point is he did get, 'hacked',. He's argument is he's too smart to get, 'hacked', therefore NCSOFT/Arenanet must have had security loopholes so he's account got compromised.
Ignoring the misuse of the word, 'hacker', and the ignorance on actual phising methods, combined with the irony regarding intelligence..it's still a dumb argument to make.
It has been the best launch that I've ever witnessed in 10 years of playing MMOs. Couple of bugs I've seen but nothing major, I was expecting the server to buckle and massive queues but I'm quite surprised. Hats off to the Devs and techies!
You seem to forget that Gw2 had larger player base at launch
oh yeah? so you know how many people bought ESO then?
We might be able to use the Cyrodiil Campaigns for reference. As i said in another thread, if they had a huge amount of pre-orders they'd probably already be talking about it for positive PR, but it's unknown.
However, GW2 had 20 servers at launch. RIFT and TOR had alot too, btw. While there aren't normal servers in ESO, the campaigns, from my understanding, are closer to it, with each player (account?), being locked to 1 main campaign. So, with 10 Cyrodiils at launch, they may not have many.
Of course that's abit of a stretch, but the RVR zone is still a persistant area with, not only pop caps, but a faction cap aswell.
Comments
you can only access your account from the IP that has been given permission.
blizzard does this now as well and i don't even need my authenticator anymore, it just auto logs me into D3.
that is one thing GW2 definitely did great and other mmo's are starting to do it now.
