im a very pissed off mmorpg gamer who thinks that mmorpg developers are scamming us with every new game that comes out, its bad enough that we have to play to pay monthly fee's for these so call games(grindfests), then they also expect us to shell out nearly full price for an expansion "hey i know you have been playing for 6 months and paying us top dollar but u cant progress any further unless you hand over another 20 quid so that you can continue to pay us your monthly fee's". thats b.s if you ask me.
Not only do we pay the monthly fee's and pay for expansion but the games are unfinished and in most cases piles of crap. why is it if you pay more you get less quality for your money. my point is, we are being ripped off by back off the box promises that do not live up to their statements. imho every mmorpg atm is crap, and for the money these companies are getting off their subscribers each month, it borders on crimal. the patches we get for our money(this is what we are paying for) are so minute that you can hardly tell they have been added and usually the patches are to fix elements in the game they were too lazy to do from the outset.
make expansions free, we are already paying for them each month why make us pay again.

Well, it costs quite a lot of money to keep the servers running and to make more content over and over again.
But you are right, it's kinda lame that we have to pay full-price for games like this and still pay over $10 every month.
I think they should make the retail game and any following expension much cheeper than they are now, let's say $19,99. This seems like a fair price to me. Normally, games cost over $50. So with a price-tag of $19,99 you will be able to play 4 months (1 free month) for the price of a normal game.
The biggest message and player can ever send to a company, is cancelling his/her account.
If you dont want to pay monthly fees, dont. If you dont want to buy expansions, dont. If these games are SO bad and not worth the money, then stop playing. And if they are worth the money (which i guess they are since you play them) then stop complaining.
Paid expansions ruin mmorpgs
Mainly population problems and the fact that u need to buy it to advance in most mmorpgs.
EVEs expansions however are how it should be done

I agree and disagree with you ...
Expansions should be free on games with monthly fees.....
OR
Pay for expansions and there not be a monthly fee
I wish they (devs and companies) would pick one.....
Of course then there is something middle of the road where the cost of the game is made fairly cheap ($25 or so) and the monthly fee only be around $8.00.
I know that dev costs and server costs are not cheap but not everyone has that kind of disposable cash. This leads to people only paying for 1 or 2 games at a time... where if it was cheaper you could draw from a larger base of players. Often I have looked at a game and thought "That looks pretty good but I really like my current game... and I cannot afford to play both"
Witty saying to amuse you goes here.
Expansions are typically designed to keep the highest-level players in game who are usually also the longest subscribers. 3 expansions a year is a bit much, but 1 every 18 months is about right. Really depends on what is expanded of course. which game are you referring too anyway? You rant about the price of an expansion yet I would question what the monthly fee actually pays for, no company has been open about it. what should happen I feel is that after 6 months since the expansion has been released it is free, but free to start off would be better or would it?
Making an expansion costs money.
You pay for the cost.
End of story.
I have a tree, a tree that's in my garde, but my garden's too small for the tree, so the tree is in my house, that means i don't have a house .... who am i anyway?
If you don't want to pay for expansions, then don't buy them.
Plain and simple.
If you don't want to pay a monthly fee, then don't play the game. Go buy a single user game, not an MMORPG.
Give Morrowind a try. It is a great game and no monthly fee. There are two expansions, but you don;t have to buy them. Oblivion is soon to be released and promises to be a great game. No monthly fee.

It's just me, so open the door.
Asheron's Call has a free expansion every month. The storyline evolves and the game gets new quests and functionality.
Well you dont NEED them. Its up to you.
I like them, mainly because it filters out people. People who are NOT scared of them are the working class (adults) that make money and are mature, the people I enjoy grouping with in other words.
It filters out kids. I mean look at WoW...nice and mature bunch eh? NOT. And here comes Blizzards first expansion...oh my I can imagine the whining going on now....lol
It's actually quite sad to see sometimes when expansion is designed to add overpowered stuff that you need to have in order to stay competive in game, because they want boost their expansion sales. Some devs go far as ruining their game by adding pre order gifts that should never be add to game.
Good example is what happen to UO once they start these expansion like AOS. Each of them had pre order gifts and content that made old content look like useless, you had to buy expansion to be able compete.
I have no problem with expansions as long they dont 1) make old content useless 2) add overpowered skills, items, classes to game, but most expansion that I have seen do both.
More mmorpg companies should follow what CCP is doing with EVE and expansion are just big content pacthes that everyone get. No one is left behind and dev team have no desire to ruin balance of their game by adding overpowered stuff to expansion in order to boost sales.
Personally, I like the Korean method to distribution and expansions. Pay the monthly fee thats it. Free to download game off net. This takes care of a few things:
-It automatically determines if someone has internet access.
-It generates on average 5-10 times more players
-Updates require less effort to make an unbugged client(as the longer you use a client the more likely the data is to degrade and corrupt)
-Updates come faster.
I have to totally agree with the op. PPl are been riped off. Thats why im not playing eq2 anymore because what we are getting for what we pay is bs.
I'm playing Knight online at. Its a free online mmo. Ill be playing that till Vanguard soh comes out. That should be worth the money for me.
