Things always go wrong when you buy a boat....

So here is what happened. I got the 45-day free trial from Wal-Mart with the free character upgrade and everything was going fine. A player gave my samurai some great armor and I found some jewelry that got my luck up and had a good naginata. I was cruising along with my horse when I decided to buy a ship. So I after grinding the gold for it I headed out for the open seas. I hit one of the other continents and found some people and monsters there that I could not handle so I headed back for home. Unfortunately I hit another island and was almost killed by something on the shore. After getting away from this water monster came up and killed me before I could heal. So here I am dead on my boat but I can command the helmsman. I make straight for the direction I think is home when I notice my corpse is now a pile of bones. This worried me, but I made it home. I rezzed at an ahnk and headed back for my boat to find that not only had my corpse disappeared but I couldn’t board because I lost my key, I tried the one in the bank but had forgotten to drop anchor. I was royally pissed not because I lost my stuff but because I lost the armor someone had generously given me and my boat and horse were just sitting there. I was thinking I would delete this character and cancel my account for UO I was so frustrated. So I logged and began to look up information on dying on the UO website. That’s when I learned about item insurance. When I logged back in I find that my boat with my horse are no longer where I left them and this just added insult to injury. But, I began to think about why I was playing UO. I wanted something that was more challenging. This little setback had given my quiet the adrenalin rush despite being frustrating. I thought if this was WoW, the other game I play, this would have been a lot more boring because there is no threat of losing your gear. In WoW I could have rezzed at the grave yard and heart stoned back to a city to repair and  hang around till my rez sickness went away. There is no harsh reality. So my character got drunk. I bought new armor, all red, dyed all my other clothing red and bought a sword. Someone gave me a sash, a small item but the people I have run into on UO are very generous. So now instead of quitting I am working my way a little wiser now. This is a great game.

    Yes very frustrating.

But at least you know that you were able to raise enough money for a boat in a "short" time. These are all minor things that you lost and most of which can be replaced.

    A word to the Wise

"Never leave town with something that you can't afford to lose"

I guess I could add even more insult to injury by saying younger players don't really even need a boat, because many of the islands you need to get to can be accessed via Moongates.

Or I could tell you that there is a semi-legal program that you can use called UOAutomap that lets you view the entire world map. This makes everything a lot easier.

But yes just consider this a learning experience. I know the loss of a boat hurts, but next time you will be ready.

Well the boat can be replaced, but the armor cannot. But I tell you the experience I have had with the community in UO so far has been the best. Your right about getting the money. In WOW it can take days if not weeks to farm all the gold for what is considerd a basic in UO, the mount.  The community in WOW is sloppy and immature. All "the magic the gathering" kids with computers. So, despite what happened I think if it had gone easier on me I would get tired of playing because there is no challenge.

I will probably try PS server soon. What  I dont understand is why people want in old school UO? I have heards some of the things about it and it sounds good but what are the draws to it for old UO players? I like the leveless and classless sytem of you because it seems to me that there is not the min/maxing and munchkins like in other MMORPGs.

LOL, I miss UO, I used to steal ship keys then run to recall to them so I could drydock them. At one time I had close to 50 ship models in my house.

    *misses UO*...la

As far as the community, how is the population? I'm a "modern"-MMO player and really want to try out UO. Seems pretty useless though if no one plays anymore.

On the Atlantic shard (server) there are a few people in the evening in Zento the samurai city, but there are quite a few more people in the major cities. I dont get around much but there are peple online.
