The original (basic) portion of the game will probably always be free now. At least untill 2007 as Funcom States. The basic game is huge and includes all of the land of Rubi-Ka and all but two professions. technicaly you can go to lvl 200 with just the basic game, however most people at some point will get the expansions with a subscription. ($10 plus as little as $8 per month) With the expantions you get Shadowlands, Notum wars, and Alien Invasion. This game is deep, fun and expansive. Not for the mentaly challenged or those with limited spans of attention. Of all the mmorpg's I've played. this is the only one I will always have a subscription to. Oh, many of the old textures in the game have been replaced and the game looks quite nice.
Yeah, originally it was only until 2006, then sometime in September I think they extended it to 2007. If it gets subscriptions, I imagine it'll stay that way.
I started as a so called "fr00b" (free account) just to check the game. I haden´t played any MMORPG since Ultima Online was kinda new, so I had no expecitions. After a month or two I was addicted, ordered all the expansions and still enjoy every second of the game.
The free account are ok, like somone mentioned already you get whole Rubi-Ka (huge) to play. But to be honest, the game are ten times better with the expansions. Better items, easier to get XP, buy items from player shop and so on.
The best thing with the free accounts is that there will always come new players to the game. It´s boring when a game only involves the old veterans. I enjoy playing and helping the new players which normally start with a free account.
Anarchy online is the only mmo ive stuck with.
Ive played a bunch of others for like a month or so, but i always lose intrest.
WoW is runner up for me, i played that for like 4 months.
This ive done 7 months and am not bored.
The game is great, has amazing depth, and is free.
Now the game is sposed to become p2p for basic in 2007, but if people keep joining, it will be prolonged,
or made free forever.
The expansions do make the game great though,
i dont agree with it being easier to xp, other than their being more places to xp,
and there are more types of xp, (shadow xp, alien xp, perks)
it is easier to xp once ur past lvl 100 with xpansions.
I suggest trying this game for a month or so as i did.
And then upgrading,
at least to shadowlands if you cant pay 10$ for all 3.
Its worth it,
Alien invasion, shadow lands, and notum wars all add great perks to the game.

AO is what kept me entertained this summer...Good game if played in short bursts..I had a Trader and got to lvl 20ish? Kinda disliked the specialization system, I never felt like I was getting better from level 1. Also..the graphics or horrible. This ones gunna stay free..at least w/o the expansions..then slowly they'll become free also. Not enough subscribers..(don't bash me for saying this) the servers were empty imo...lots of high levels..not much people lowish.
