ESO does Character Immersion really well!

I honestly haven't seen anything like this in quite a while, last time I really went motivated to explore the world and even talk to non-quest NPCs was in vanilla WoW but this game takes that experience to a whole new level. Has anyone else had the pleasure of just exploring the world and talking to everybody? Here's a quick commentary on the topic of Character Immersion,  aside from that i'd love to what everyone thinks about this topic!

ahh but for some of us, when the speakers mouth moves up and down like a skeleton it's a deal breaker. It's was ok in pac man when pac mans mouth moved exactly the same way evertime and gobbled up all the dots, but this is supposed to be elder scrolls.

So in beta whenever I talked to an npc all I could think of was pac man because the npc mouth just went straight up and down.

I agree, its horrible, can't believe they couldn't have made that any better, but then again, look at the character animations, which are just as horrible.

What do you think about immersion from a story-centric perspective?

ESO came close a couple of times to making me feel "immersed" in the world, the story and the character I was playing, but there was always something that dragged me back out and reminded me it was a game.

That wouldn't matter too much to me usually. I don't mind my games feeling like games. It is a rare and special quality when a game truly sucks me in. Every game in the TES franchise since Morrowind has managed to do it, which is why I love the franchise so much.

    And that's the problem...

TESO doesn't immerse me because it ALWAYS feels like an MMO. Where Skyrim felt natural, like a real place I could immerse myself in, ESO feels like a series of rides organised along a neat path that I'm directed to follow. And with this strict direction comes a permanent reason to not be immersed.

As I said, I don't mind my games feeling like games. However where I can see a game TRYING (and failing) to achieve a particular end, I don't enjoy myself. ESO FEELS like it's trying to immerse me, but it suffers from a mechanical bias away from immersion almost all of the time.

I really believe it has a lot to do with the first person perspective.  Even though you don't have to use it, and can scroll out to 3rd person, I'm guessing a lot of people are playing in 1st most of the time.  This leads to feeling like you ARE the character, rather than you are "controlling" the character.

Also, the realistic and very well done graphics are another big plus.  Elder Scrolls has always been great with making the world feel like it's almost "real".

Agree with both of you and i believe that combat and character/skill animations are of the worst i ve ever experienced, at least by an AAA mmo.

And I find both the combat and animations to be great and really fun. To which game are you measuring all this against if this is the worst you have ever layed eyes on?

I wont disagree with you or any1 else who finds the Combat or Animations or whatever ESO offers superb. Its my opinion and i respect and accept others opinion too.

As i said before, pointing some things i don't like in a game don't means i want the game to be a failure. I always want successful games to be released because its good both for gamers and the genre itself.

Btw i think ESO combat & animations are about RIFT's quality. Games like GW2, SWTOR, Wildstar, TERA, WoW, FFA are far superior and i m not even fan of them (except WoW & Wildstar at least what i have experienced from beta).

Anyway i m saying it again, different ppl, different tastes :)

I think they have put some major effort into making the areas you explore and adventure in, feel immersive.  Such as sneaking into the Barrows with skelly's all over guarding it, and you going in and eliminating them one at a time sneaking around.  As you follow the questline of the Barrows and it ends with you basically removing the curse, the skelly's actually disappear or are all lying on the ground dead, as you have saved the day!  So leaving the area (in the open world mind you) you don't have to fight the same skelly's on your way out.  That really clicked for me.

I wonder what happens if I ever return to the Barrows?  Will it remain devoid of skelly's?  I should find out.

I bet there are 2 phases of the Barrows for example.  One where the skelly's are moving about and the questline is available, and then another phase where it's completed and the server keeps track of which phase you need to be in.

Have you ever tried going back to the same place an NPC was who gave you a quest?  Most of the time he's/she's gone!  Sure, you can see other PC's around the area where the NPC "was" but for you, the NPC is gone!

There are a lot of quests out there.

Today in game someone said "I'm x level and ran out of quests" and all I could think was that I was much higher than him in the same area and was still finding quests.

Basically, people should look at the map. If there is a blank spot anywhere, chances are there's a quest or event or "something" there.

possibly. I've noticed several areas where there are undead. initially they were aggressive to me but after I finished the quest for the area they ignored me.

I've also fallen into the "let me just speak to this guy in a tree house" and Yadda yadda yadda, I'm freeing some servant of azura in coldharbor with a Twilight following me around.

That's what I like about this game, you start a quest and it could take you in any direction.
