Give me a Difficulty Option!

SomeHumanSomeHuman Member UncommonPosts: 560

Does anyone else remember mmorpg's that had servers which were at a harder setting, or was that just for pvp?  I'd love to have an option to tick for game difficulty just for my own client, but it'd be great to have a "Hard"server for any of the games I've enjoyed over the years.    Would it hurt balance to have this option at least for PvE elements?  I guess I could just run around sans gear, but I'm not sure that would really do the trick in some current games.

I know this topic has been touched on before, but it's always worth responding to..  YES, we should have a variety of difficulty servers..  Take WoW for the example.. Make some servers in which the average trash mob is 300% tougher.. This would make soloing ultra difficult, combat longer and endorse grouping once again outside of the LFD instancing.. Naturally I feel some tweaks would have to occur as well such as increase group and rain size to accommodate everyone..  I would even make dungeons harder as well..

I've been saying that for years....WoW does come to mind when I think that.

HOWEVER, I figured out developers reasoning in why the easy crap :

I used to believe developers when they say that the soccer moms were complaining that " little Davey can't play the game because it's too hard " so they made it easy......This is not the motivation, it's to burn through content faster to sell expansion's.

There was a game called City of Heroes that gave everyone the ability to set difficulty level number and level of bosses.  People would team as well.  I still miss it.

If memory serves, EQ had this instance dungeons from Lost Dungeons of Norrath, and users can adjust the difficulties for better drop rates. DDO also have similar adjustments.

But really, most gamers will just pick the easiest difficulty if the loot is still the same but lower drop rates. Otherwise they can just raid or something.

The possibility of the universe collapsing into a singularity is higher than the birth of a perfect MMORPG.

Ah, maybe it was dungeons I was thinking about.  Maybe it's just my old fart-ness, but I'm sick of running through the first 15-20 levels without dying or being challenged.  I think this is tied to the MSPORPG mentality, too.  My last attempt at a non-beta/alpha mmorpg was FFXIV, and that was my experience.  It felt like playing tic tac toe by myself in a beautiful world.

Not true. Just look at D3. No one is playing on normal. But you are right, loot is not the same. Some set items and legendary items won't drop until torment. Plus, since the loot is random, drop rates make a huge difference.

Difficulty option works beautifully in that game. Everyone was complaining that inferno was too hard ... once that is in ... no one complains about difficulty anymore.

Plus, why would you care about what others are doing as long as you have the right difficulty to have fun?

    Single player games have them.

Well for me that;s the great thing with MMORPG's I don't need a difficulty options because I can already make a MMO more challenging by what's already ingame. Problem is people will say they don't want to gimp themself. But if a game is to easy and you can make it harder yourself then it's not about gimping yourself but more about just seeking more challenge.

I like difficulty options in singleplayer FPS/Action games. Don't need them in MMORPG because we can already do that with games in this genre.

This is why I dismiss the whole "harder" bandwagon. Games are about repetition and sequence. The only people who benefit from "hard" are macro users and they only benefit if it's forced on to everyone. I question the motives.

with great success, i may add ... it is a new feature that MMOs can learn from.

We can also "gimp" ourselves in SP games, but I also like the reward of wearing loot and progression.  I'd also like combat not to be about patterns and repetition.  Some AI for mobs are improving.  I remember first fighting a goblin in Darkfall and getting my butt handed to me.  That was part of the reason I stayed in so long.  I don't see how it could hurt other players for me to have a harder play-through.  I'd like to have to ask for help from people and maybe group to achieve a goal.

Would it only be a matter of shifting some numbers in the programming?
