I've only played for an hour... I was lagging, so I didn't like it at all...My latency was low (good it tells me)... but it was lagging...like even on the log in screen, when I type letters it takes a bit/sec before letters would show up...:/
Well i don't like the steering, it's based on wasd and i prefer using a mouse for steering (rt clik and hold for EQ,EQ2,WoW) (leftclick and hold for DDO) and i couldn't even stay on the road without going very slow.
Looked through all the options and it isn't fixable
Tried to enter forums to see if there was a workaround to use the mouse for steering, and couldn't get in the forums.
So basically I saw what should be a great idea for a game to just be more frustration than anything else
So go for it if you like to steer with letters, otherwise it is just too frustrating to be worth the download.
Mostly, not enjoying this very much...I'm having framerate problems that makes it look very laggy...
I thought they did something to make u feel like the driver?...I start out using the car and I havent figured out where I go to be on foot...
The items and stuff is really confusing, as well with all the interface and stuff...alot of complex stuff...
however, running around running people down and killing stuff is kinda fun..
I have no idea how to group...I don't think the control I'm allowed over the vehicle is rigid enough, I think it's too loose:/...
The quests are sort of confusing on their own, and don't really seem to be about any main story... So I'm a bit loss right now as far as the main purpose( I know there's the pvp stuff for endgame...but ya know...)
I agree with Anwar, I really don't like the steering. I'm finding it very difficult to steer, stay on the road or chase and target mobs. Also the turning radius is way to big, it's very difficult controlling the vehicle and getting it to go where you want.
Not being able move your vehicle very well is just frusatrating and not very fun.

Yeah definatly. The game is way too complex. But it's problem is it's needleslly complex. There are a ton of stats but like no real depth to it. Wow... glad I didn't pre-order yet.
The download time is absurd. I logged in at 3:00 central, it's midnight now, and I've still got 200 megs left to download. Getting the client ahead of time did almost no good but I will post my impressions sometime tomorrow.
Had no problem logging on and creating a characte, all pretty basic. Cool vehicles with colors and so forth. I picked the Bounty hunter character type (human)
Noticed a little lag but not much, steering is abysmal at first but gets a little bit easier with practice targeting is also very touchy.
Quests were interesting but a little difficult to sort out. Bottom
Bottom line, level 3 after 3 hours with a about 8 pices of loot including a piece of armor and a bunch of medals.
Dl took me 2 1/2 hours total including patch. I played for 7 hours stright after I first logged in and I think that AA is wicked.
I play alot of driving games and at first I thought the stearing was bad, but then i realised that it is well suited to the game. Im not sure if all the cars have different stering but the bio terminator is very sharp, easy to turn 180's.
system requirments are very high, I noticed some video lag, the textures are high. It needs to be optimised for sure. They reccomend 1 gig ram and mean it.
I thought the game over-all was not complex and I didnt have a problem trying to figure out controls, UI ect. I thought it was simple and stright forward.
This is the weirdest game I've ever played. I can't tell if I like it or not.
The steering is ok when you get used to it..... I'd rather it be a different system, I really think they need to work on the controls a bit. It's hard to use the different turn types... no matter how I configure it. I think a mouse would work much better.
I've played for just over 4 hours and for the people that are saying this game is complex, it really is not. I dont know if its harder for the other races but as a Mutant Avenger Ive found the game is hands on and easy to pick up and play, but challenging enough to keep you entertained. For those having problems with quests, a quick once over through the mission log will get you on the right track (although I heard some Mutant Shamans were having some trouble). For those who say the game has no depth, read through the dialogue. I know many players who simply spam through the dialogue and expect some magical blimps to appear on screen to show them where they are going. While this is the case if you take one quest at a time, if you just spam through npcs and try to do quests without reading of course you are going to have a hard time.
The steering is a bit tricky to get at first, but its well suited for the game. Tab Shift tab and home ( the key I mapped for targeting closest mob) help with targeting mobs and fighting them, so if you are having trouble fighting mobs make sure to use the tal function (tracking function).
The quests in the game are a nice change of pace from the "collect x item from y mob for x npc", as there is sometimes a little more involvement. For example my first mutant mission I had to go into a heavily guarded humie base (nick name for humans) and deactivate a orbital tower, I also had to stay still and dodge fire while doing so... adding alot of challenge to the game. Another mission I did was as simple as delivering engine parts and installing them into a broken down truck. Another fun mission involved going through a race track littered with enemies.
I dont see how people think the game is "needlesly complex", people have been asking for a more immersive game and AA delivers. You want an easy game? Go to WoW, or one of the hundreds of other hack and slash mmos out there... you want an action paced plot rich and twitch/skill based game? Go to AA.
Ill definetly be picking this one up.
Just on the border of your waking mind There lies another time Where darkness and light are one, And as you tread the halls of sanity, You feel so glad to be unable to go beyond. I have a message from another time...
Okay maybe I can shed some light on the game and the responses people have been giving.
First of all with the 'choppy'ness of the game. If your latency is good and it's still choppy, then it's probably your system/video lag. Now before you get upset cause you have a 7800 or XT800 or whatever, let me say this. At this stage of the beta they are still working on optimizing the game's graphics/systems. This means that they are still working on ironing the engine and stuff out so it runs smoothly for everyone. Don't fret, it's likely that it will only take the right game patch to come down and your system will be fine. I agree it's a little choppy for me too, but it's nothing to worry about as they're still working on it and it'll be nice and smooth for everyone once the game is done.
The steering. I know some people say it's a little weird, and it is because it's using a realistic physics engine and most people coming from other mmo's need to get used to it. That's okay, just drive around for a while and get a feel for it. There's alot of effort gone into the steering system because obviously this is a driving game. You can buy different tires that will grip better on different surfaces and stuff like that. The car will drive differently on sand than it will on gravel or on concrete (kinda like real life, yay). I do hope they add the ability for mouse-steering for those who want it, but I might suggest if you can't get used to the wasd steering, perhaps try using a gamepad or joystick or even a driving wheel joystick (a little too obvious, I know). Just give it some time to get used to it and I'm sure you'll be fine. It really is fun driving around and running into things, or over people. Going off jumps and flying through the air so you can come crashing down on whatever's below. I was once pulling in to talk to my quest guy who was standing next to an Antenna tower, only I accidentally rammed the tower and it all came crashing down. I was sure everyone was looking and calling me a bonehead, hehe.
The quests, well sometimes they get repetitive, but honestly most games have similar quests. When you have to put out 100+ quests for each race, sometimes you get a little similarity. In general the quests aren't really that tedious though, and give you waypoints and stuff so you don't have to spend lots of time searching for things.
Complexity. Okay I understand this one. When you first get into the game it seems a little daunting. There are lots of stats and items and stuff, even your tires have stats! The thing is you don't need to know everything about the game when you start out. My advice is just to learn as you play. Drive around and shoot stuff, have fun. There are newbie tips that tell you things you need to know too. Don't worry about min/maxing yourself right from the start, cause there's a long way to go and whether you use a chaingun with 1-4 dmg or a rocket launcher with 4-7 dmg doesn't really matter in your first day or so. Don't worry about using all the items you pick up right away, go and do your stuff, then when you go back to the base to heal or whatever, just take a look at the stuff in your inventory and ask questions if you need help.
Finally for getting out of your car. You have to be in a Town for that. For humans, the first town is Upside, and you won't go there probably till you're level 5 or so. But it's in there.

I am running:
Radeon 9600XT (128mb 600mhz core clock, runs better than most 256s) 2.4GHz Celeron 1.28 GB RAM
The game was choppy for me at first, then I lowered the video settings just slightly and it ran VERY smooth.

Actually you've got it exactly right. I know I read it somewhere (can't remember where exactly) but one of the 'known issues' is that the game has not been optimized for people with under 1 gig of ram yet. If you have less than 1 gig of ram, you should expect a performance hit.
"Because it's easier to nitpick something than to be constructive." -roach5000
Sounds like those people with low ram are having troubles. Just remember Steve said that you would need a gig of ram, and even then sounds like you have to lower your settings a tad. Now let's see some screenshots!

Bang!
This is why I don't like this game. For a CAR MMO, you would think the steering would be more responsive than having it feel like your car moves and handles like my Ogre on EQ2....
Mouse sensitive steering would have made all the difference.

The steering is fine. You guys just have to learn to use the space bar and turn if you want to turn quick. The problem is the game is aimed towards 12 year olds.

Played a few hours so far. Well look like i'll pass on this one. I prefer controlling a human character over a car. I don't like how you have to steer and use the mouse to target all at the same time. Game also seems to be quiet redundant, i did a few quests and beside the go kill X amount of mob Y there is not much to do.
Been in beta since it started (more or less) and the game has been getting better and better. It just would NOT work if you had mouse steering. The way the game plays, you have to have the mouse to control your turret weapon. That being said, I'm running on an XP 3200+, 1GB RAM, and a nVidia 6800 at default settings and it runs very nicely for me. Fun action RPG...light on the RP, heavy on the action.

Comeon anyone out there who can tell us unlucky non-US residents or people otherwise unable to play what its like?
