Last year at SOE Live the team here at MMORPG.com got wind that Sony was working on another black box project that they were not willing to talk about yet in addition to EverQuest Next, and EQN: Landmark. Earlier today the internet got confirmation just what that project is. It was announced during an episode of Game Talk Live featuring SOE President John Smedley, their new MMO is H1Z1.

I heard Smed dropped the "swg spiritual sucessor" thing on Twitter, but i can't confirm it.
Regarding the article, i agree. "Individual, intelligent AI". Yeah right, i'll believe it when i play it. As for more than 1 type of zombie, let's hope so. If the only enemy type is the "decaying human being that rushes at you", like in the video, then the pve will turn stale in a short time. If they have stuff like Hulks that can break walls apart and would require some multiple players, that'd be great.
Forvige my skepticism aswell, but i need to see if the survival aspects of the game rule supreme, or if it'll turn into gank/farm fest of an mmo.
Is this the game that is supposed to appeal to SWG fans?
I can't help but to think of this whole project as cheesy. It's like releasing a Vampire MMO during the whole Twilight phase.
I've never really been into the whole Zombie thing. I know I don't speak for everyone, but I'll probably pass on this one. I never liked MMOs that involve modern earth etc. I know Fantasy and Sci-Fi have been done 1,000 times, but it's the genre I prefer.
If I want to experience Zombies, I'll walk into a Walmart.
This was my thought too.
Im a fantasy guy so this has limited appeal to me, but those indie games dont have the same scope as an MMO
One could say on a stretch, that Vanilla WoW and WotLK WoW were heavily zombified.
I haven't seen anything that call this swg vet home yet.
My god even people working at this site don't even know what an MMO is anymore... No DayZ Rust and all those are not mmo's This will be the first on a MMO scale. and exactly what i predicted it would be. A survival MMO where you need eachother and build shelters etc. No giant douchebagery (altho that will probaply never go away) i wonder what limitations they will put in when u die.
I mean if you wanna create a post apocalyptic world where the focus is mutual survival you got to put in a way to stop douchebags from destroying shelters and potentially letting zombies overun places. Altho that might be something you should be able to do in a turf war. Humz :P
edit: The swg experience would probaply be the crafting / housing / socialism. it seems to be set up in that way
I for one am SHOCKED!!!
mmorpg.com giving a sceptical/negative review of a SOE product? That's just CRAZY! What is this world coming to?!
All razzing aside, I'd love to know what exactly Smed thinks SWG players actually wanted/miss, and how this game is going to fill that perceived void. It really seems they've truly lost the plot this time.
that makes no sense. theme park vs survival horror? its not just about having zombies in the game
As an SWG Vet this game appeals to me, I like world building and sandbox open world communities etc.
This game is very similar mechanically and spiritually to SWG.
If you can't see that, I doubt you played SWG.
I see the connection. Smed mentioned something about trying to be a farmer. the game seems to be heavily about building communities. He mentioned player driven economy. This is exactly the sort of stuff people loved about SWG.
He shouldnt have said it and let players draw their own conclusions, but on paper I can certainly see the appeal. We just dont know how involved the crafting is or what kind of character building (skills) there will be.
well
What im imagining and offcourse pure speculation.
They way they are probaply going would be no levels. Just skills raising building skills crafting skill shooting etc evrything you do ingame you keep getting better at it. At first tho we probaply will be fucked XD
Eve like skillsystem? and with crafting think PotBS you cant make evrything yourself u really would need the help of other people. and work as a community to get certain goals achieved.
This can be really complex/deep and immersive if they implement it right.
+1
Unfortunately I think that the SWG extremists take "Spiritual Successor to SWG" as "We're re-making SWG!"
As far as the game itself, I think my kids will probably like it. I'll probably be heavily involved with The Repopulation at that point and I only plan on playing one sandbox.

I was using a touch of sarcasm as a joke. Thus the phrase "on a stretch" Didn't that tip you off that I wasn't taking that seriously?
And since when does "survival horror = zombies"? That's like a fantasy setting with only undead. And no, no undead dragons, undead knights, just plain undead humanoids.
Atleast fantasy games have a wide variety of enemy types that require different ways to engage them.
Why not create more monsters anyway? Flying beast that search for victims, hellhounds that track down players, large monsters can require teamwork to kill. So many different ways to create creatures that can be horrifying and boost gameplay.
EDIT: Yes, there aren't that many zombie mmos, but since the genre revolves around keeping a good, stable playerbase, why not make a game that tries something truly different.
Hell, a werewolf survival horror mmo would be more interesting.
All I've seen is zombies getting shot in the face and smed saying you can lght stuff on fire. That doesn't scream swg to me. If he had said, "this game has more non combat professions than combat ones and here are some of the many social systems you can partake in." Then yes I would share your sentiment. You'll have to excuse me if I don't suddenly think "swg successor!" Every time someone says massive open persistent world. That is a huge jump for me at least.
Agreed

there arent ANY
not a single one, at least as far as AAA games and high/medium profile indies.
Lets just wait and see what happens though I really don't care much and I agree with others who mentioned this game should have been more "Resident Evil/Silent Hill Online" than Walking Dead we will see what happens. Honestly though I think just going from the Walking Dead angle this is not a solid financial choice in the long run. Unless this game has more than just zombies and pvp surrounding it in the long run this will have no staying power. Don't get me wrong I am happy seeing more non fantasy entries but SOE needs to put as much meat on this thing as possible and throwing around zombies nad group pvp is simply not enough. Those other zombie types better own.
Now an mmo with 28 days later/I am Legend Zombies and all that comes with those types of zombies? Oh yeah, I'd be there for that one. Slow roamers? Who cares
Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!
That's just it.
There is next to no information on this game and already this thread is going back and forth on how much of a SWG successor it is.
The thing I recall about SWG was that it's IP, It's setting, it's theme were almost incidental. One of the things that made SWG fun to play for me was that the game stood up by itself even though it was a Star Wars title. What I mean by that is that this game's mechanics need to stand on their own and the game cannot be dependent on the whole zombie thing. Otherwise that just makes it another Theme Park.
