Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft: Single Player Adventure Mode Announced

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Blizzard has announced a new single player adventure mode for Hearthstone. The first campaign is titled "Curse of Naxxramas" and will give players the opportunity to take their favorite deck into the famous floating citadel from World of Warcraft's Northrend location. Players will face off against the boss of each of Naxxramas' five wings.

What?!

Curse of Naxxramas will be a new single player campaign for Hearthstone. Straight out of Warcraft lore, Naxxramas is a floating necropolis filled with the stuff of nightmares. In Hearthstone, the Naxxramas Adventure will have players use their deck of choice to take on a host of creepy-crawly bosses in a series of card battles representing the five different wings of Naxxramas.

Victors will earn cards along the way, leaving a trail of defeated bosses in their wake, and ultimately unlock a chest containing an all-new Legendary card at the end of each wing! Curse of Naxxramas will add a total of 30 brand-new cards to Hearthstone, which players will be able to add to their decks only by completing the Adventure. Each boss will bring its own unique abilities, minions, Hero art, and taunt-filled emotes to the playing table.

How?!

The different wings of Naxxramas will be added to the game over the course of five weeks. As with The Arena, price of entry for Naxx will be payable with in-game gold OR real cashola, take your pick.

When?!

We’re currently working hard to get Curse of Naxxramas out to players as Soon™ as possible.

Find out more about Hearthstone.

    Its a free game!

There's nothing that "should have been in".

There's content they planned and released and then there's content YOU wanted (that they never promised you).

Hey, this will renew my interest in the game. It'll be interesting to see how many of these they can bang out in a year.

Hearthstone was one of the only Digital Card Games out there without a story mode. Judging only on what is the norm, it was lacking a component.

It is like me saying: "I will give you a vanilla milkshake, but you will only get it sweetened and thickened with heavy cream." Then down the line I say: "We are now going to offer frozen milkshakes." Your reaction would be: "That's nothing that should have been there. They gave you a milkshake, and now they are adding the frozen content."

Milkshakes SHOULD be frozen sludge. Just like card games SHOULD have story modes. They also SHOULD have an AI for Vs that could use the cards you want to play against, and they SHOULD have arenas with specialty rulesets, like "No legendaries", "Limited only" & other stuff.

Most diehard card players realized how Hearthstone was providing a veiled system of inconvenience that could only be overcome by using real money. And players realized that you will always stay at a relative level unless you had the advantage of some powerful legendary cards. This is now a way for them to cover that detail with a little bit of sand, and hope that people's drive to get those "story arc legendaries" will keep them in their game for longer than they currently are.

if you don't at least got 2 rag's and cairn's just quit . the game will become more expensive for you . mean while every one who played in the beta who got more dust per disenchant and more rewards per win in arena probably has max in game gold and wont spend a cent

since it just got ported to tablets 4 months tops before hearthstone dies out . carte was nice to before they started adding expansions ...

So grinding to get gold and spending zero real life cash to unlock Naxx is considered P2W now???

    ok. . .

p2w means exclusive content only available through real money purchases. HS you can get everything for free. it's not hard to do infinite arena runs to build your collection, that's what I did. sorry you are bad.

Sounds nifty. Will have to check it out once it is released. If it is anything like the original Naxx i expect tears.. =P

As for cost, my guess is that it will cost a dollar tor two per attempt but be crazy difficult. That way you will not feel the pain when you spend those 20$ =P

This have been a good conversation

You can unlock all the NAXX content with ingame gold, no real money required - I've not played for a while but I had arounf 600 gold on my account which equates to ~$6 real money.  I can bet thats enough to unlock all of NAXX.

There is still NO content locked behind a paywall.

There are a lot of reasons to complain about Hearthstone, but money isn't one of them. This looks neat.

You do realize that you can only have one copy of a given legendary in your deck, don't you?

    -----

How many of you have played the AI "expert" heroes?  How many of you felt the need to beat them more than once each?  The problem with the existing PVE in Hearthstone is that it's dreadfully boring, apart from as a tutorial when you're first learning the game.  And this is coming from someone who is almost exclusively a PVE player in most other games.

Playing the right card in the right situation, having the right minion attack the right target, and so forth is tricky and complicated.  It's essential for that to be the case in order for PVP to be interesting, as if there's always an obvious best play, winning is just a matter of deck and luck, not skill.  That's boring.

Now, I'm not saying that it's impossible to make sensible plays.  But the reason I bring this up is that it's vastly harder to write good AI than it is to play well yourself.  The "expert" AI routinely makes flagrantly dumb moves.  If Blizzard can't write dramatically better AI, then any additional PVE will mostly be a matter of the AI does really dumb stuff and then you win--or perhaps the AI has vastly better decks then you, and you hope that it does enough really dumb stuff that you win anyway.  And writing good AI is very hard in a game with the diverse card effects necessary to keep it interesting.

Most likely, the PVE will be a matter of, you play through it once to get the cards and then never touch it again.  So basically, Blizzard is saying, you have to pay (possibly gold, but even here, this is instead of getting card packs, possibly via arena) to get the cards necessary to keep up.

For what it's worth, while Blizzard hasn't announced prices, I'd expect something in the ballpark of $5 or 400 gold per wing.

dont the arena games cost gold per play? what makes you guys think you will be able to buy access to Naxx? Isnt it likely that it will cost gold for each run?

i played briefly in beta and just didnt care for the pvp aspect for the game :|

i guess I realize that card games are traditionally this kind of pvp .. which is i guess a reason im not that into card games.

was kinda hoping this game would bridge that gap for me, but it didnt, at least not initially.

adding pve stuff like this is a step in the right direction for me, but not if I have to farm pvp matches to get access (or buy gold)

if its a 1 time purchase (b2p) id almost definitely check it out.

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already :)
