I was a big UO fan in 98-99 until they started to patch and patch and patch while screwing the gameplay, but still no other games offer as nearly as much interaction with its world. I also liked the fact that there were no levels and the only way to progress was by using skills. Only in UO I could buy a shovel and run to the closest mountain to dig some ores and melt them into iron ingots to either sell or use for blacksmithing purposes. In most MMOPRGs now, all you can do is farm ingredients off monters, which is somewhat a pain. Economy-wise, UO was great : newbies had to make money to equip themselves so most of them would gather ressources (wood, ingots, leather, wool, fishes, etc) and sell them to crafters (blacksmiths, tailors, carpenters, bakers, alchemists, etc) who sold their stuff to adventurers who constantly needed to renew their equipement. I also liked the fact that there were no Godly Breasplate of the Wales kind of items, so GrandMasters crafters were useful and people could chose the way to earn their money : gather, adventure or craft without having to fight (except for adventurers). I also loved player vendors, where one could hire a NPC to sell his stuff at his house. Housing... damn it was great.
You could do so much in this game that you can no longer do in any of today's games. You can't buy yourself a boat and a fishing poal, or use your cartography skill to find your way around or to find treasures, you can't buy a house, decorate it with furniture built by a carpenter, you can't tailor yourself clothes and dye it the way you want, you can't live off crafting without having to fight monsters... there's just so much.
Well I'm somewhat nostalgic about UO right now... as I'm getting bored with every MMORPGs I played ever since I quit UO. They all feel the same. WoW plays the same way EQ did, GW has so little to do, AC is dead, ShadowBane sucks.
Is there any game being developped that is going to be the next UO?
