There is a huge F2P market to choose from. But it would be hard to nail down without knowing your tastes. I am currently playing Star Trek Online, Star Wars The Old Republic, Fallen Earth, Planetside 2, and APB Reloaded. All those games I have played for years and have done so on my last pc which had Vista. Of all those games, the only one I can't really recommend for F2P people is SWTOR simply because it's too restrictive. Star Trek Online has about the best model I've seen in a long time and so it's my favorite. You have access to the whole game without paying anything. Updates and expansions are free. If you want more iconic ships though those will cost money but you can grind dilithium currency and then trade it for their cash shop coins in game if you put in the work so you can even get the premium content for no cost.
aion is your best bet it has one of the best f2p models out their second choice would be SWTOR dont let the haters make you think SWTOR is bad it's not and it's very good too both games should run well on vista
Best F2P mmos ive played: Rift, Tera, Fallen earth those 3 imo are the highest quality Free 2 play mmos. Tera has great pvp system in place. Rift has really really well done PvE raids and leveling dungeons, Fallen earth is very time consuming and intricate when it comes to crafting.

I say NoScape
Since you were fine using vista I figured you were looking for something archaic, limited and can run on a etch-a-sketch.

World of Warcraft?
Hahaha say what you want about this thread but these two responses have made my night haha
Anyone else got a better suggestion? So far all ive got is generic IP's and that SWTOR isnt worth playing (wich I already knew).
I run Tera on Vista.
