Looking for an awe-inspiring/discovery MMO

N-DWN-DW Member Posts: 1

Hey guys,

I'm fairly new to this forum, I've been lurking here and there and keeping an eye out for some of the upcoming MMO's, but I haven't been very active on the in-depth search for some good MMO's that I might like, because I really didn't have the time. Now I'm finally getting some stuff done, and getting some breathing space to maybe start a new adventure in a (hopefully) awesome game. I hope you guys can give me some advice or point me in the direction I'm looking for.

I'm not a native English-speaker, so I hope you can forgive my sometimes shabby grammar and/or spelling.

I don't really have a lot of MMO experience, I've only played WoW (Vanilla -> Wrath) and GW2.

What I like in a MMORPG:

  • PVP
  • Great storyline and lots of Lore (OR something like Dark Souls, that game isn't to overwhelming with lore, but still has this historic feel to it.) Sci fi, Medieval setting, etc... I don't really care, as long as it's good.
  • A vast open world, with lots of secrets to discover
  • A learning curve, but not to steep.
  • Grinding is okay... But not too much, I get bored after an hour of grinding.
  • Roleplaying is a bonus.

What I really like and haven't found in a lot of games is this awe-inspiring, discovering feeling. I LOVE moments when you look at your screen and think: this is effin' awesome. Or the more subtle feeling that you get when you discover an area that has a story to tell. Even if it's just a small house with some weird kids in it (Goldshire stuff). I've played EVE for a while, and I had a similar feeling, but because of the vastness of space and all of the posibilities that you have to go out there and be amazed by other players or the world (space) itself.

But maybe I'm just looking for that nostalgic feel that you get when you first play a game like that, that fascinates you because it's totally different than what you're used to and you try to find out what's behind every stone/door. So I'm not sure if ANY game can live up to that. But I certainly hope so.

I hope I can get my point across, but if I have to explain some stuff in detail, I'd be happy to.

Many thanks for taking the time to read this and I look forward to your comments!

I haven't tried Secret World, though I've heard similar things from friends who play it -- that it's very different and at least that gives you some moments of discovery.

I'd also recommend giving Elder Scrolls Online, strangely.  This game wasn't on my radar at all until it was released.  I'm a fan of the fantasy MMO genre and have also played EvE a bit (I totally know what you mean about the awe and discovery in that game).

ESO has been a real surprise for me.  I found it a bit generic and bland for the first few levels (bad design in the start areas imho) but since about level 6-7 it's been the most fun I've had in an MMO in years.  The leveling is very slow, the crafting takes forever, and the world is build around exploration, immersion and discovery.  It's strange.  I think in the end it will be always be a controversial MMO because it's not going to appeal to people who want more splashy / saturated colorful world, but it's a very deep MMO and has a lot of emphasis on character progression.

Anyway, it may not be your thing, but I'd recommend giving it a try.

I can sum the secret world up quite succinctly.

    #2 - press 2 & wait a second

    #3 - press 2 & wait a second

    #6 - Goto #1

Decent quests, Good lore, Zero game play..

Guild Wars 2 has a very detailed world with lots of hidden areas and optional lore. It's also very pretty.
