A combat question/remark

thekid1thekid1 Member UncommonPosts: 789

Just played the beta a bit and left while doing the combat training. I played a lot of other mmorpg's, Guild Wars 2 being my last a year ago.

I feel a bit silly but I forgot how these other games did combat. I know some of them had auto shooting and some had auto tracking the enemy.

Wildstar does not have either (right?)

I seem not to be able to reliable and smoothly target/hit the enemy while moving. I have to keep right mouse button pressed while using the W A S D keys and at the same time hit 1 or 2 on the keyboard; it feels very awkward to me. (Or use the mouse on the hotbar but that means movement is compromised/changed.)

It's like I'm back in 1988 playing on the MSX 1 without a joystick. (Or am playing a LEGO game without controller..)

Is this me? Did I forget how to play a mmorpg? Or did I miss a setting in the  game to alter this? I can't believe it's supposed to be like this really..

This is not a flame thread, I'm not planning on playing this game anyway (subscription) I'm just very curious what's going on. I also really want to see the planet instead of this space station I'm stuck on because I like the art style and there seems to be a lot of work put in to it.

edit.

I played Spellslinger by the way so I had dual pistols

Can only talk for the class I had picked for a brief test. All my attacks were cone-attacks. A blue "pattern" on the floor would indicate what I would hit. Did some duelling and in my opinion it was not that hard to hit stuff. Hitting stuff on the move while they are moving with a normal crosshair in any first-person-shooter is way harder. Games like Tera, Darkfall and Mount&Blade were also a bit harder to master, as your swing attacks also were a cone, but without visuals those are little bit harder to time and stay on the target.

I had other issues with the controls. Games like TERA and GW2 have way better intuitive controls. Double tab dodging, I could not find a key to assign dodge to. So I only have to press the direction and can use a mousebutton to dodge.

I did some thinking and remembered how Star Wars Galaxies did things. (pre NGE, CPU, whatever)

Aiming/targeting and shooting was automated; you always hit the enemy even without input.

So you only had to use the WASD keys to evade and stay in range and use the mouse to press the hotbar (or use the keyboard to press 1, 2, 3, etc.)

But in this game you have to use the WASD keys and mouse (whole holding right mouse button) to evade AND aim.

PLUS you have to mash the 1, 2, etc. keys to continue shooting. You can't just take a second to decide which skill to use; you have to mash the keyboard or your character stops shooting. (or I missed a setting/option)

If you want to press a button to dodge in the direction you are running, that option is called directional dash I believe and is in the keybinds.

I presume you mean double-tap dodging? You know you can do that in Wildstar right?

    ..Cake..

There is definitely a key bind to dodging so you can turn double tap to dodge off.  Its under your keybind settings as "directional dash"

OP:  Im not sure if you want it to be like where u move your mouse and it moves your direction.. but there is an add-on for it called "deadlock" or something like that that makes it just like how it is in the recent dungeons and dragons game.

You can try the addon "Steer" if you like. It autolocks the right mousebutton as soon as your character moves and releases it when you stop.

It makes a huge difference in how combat feels.

On a sidenote: How long will it take until the  crappy bugged quote function of this forum gets fixed?

Like I said; I was merely curious what was up with the combat controls in this game. They feel extremely awkward and wonky to me.

This forum software sucks, always will.
