Final Fantasy 11 - Whats the Catch?

Few months back I watched a view preview clips, and thought FF XI was looking the dogs balls. But everyone who has played it has said its not even that good.

Just wandered if anyone here actually finds this game good, and worth a buy (im a FF fan after all).

Just post your opinions, whats the ups and downs of the game etc, cheers!

1)It was too dang slow, and I had to get back to studying for midterms.
2)Storage was really really limited and you needed a lot of it.
3)I kept fighting the same reskinned mob over and over.
4)It takes ages to find a party, and if you do get one, someone always has to leave once you get out into the field. (This is perhaps not so bad if you join a hardcore guild with a theme running.)
    5)Inane Japanese/US conflict.
6)Lastly, once you suspend your account, the only way to resubscribe is to buy a new $50 box.

It was my first mmog. I never got past level thirtysomethingish before I hit cancel account, so my experience may have been limited. There's no way I would do that over in order to see what it was like above that, even if it was at a discount price. Seemed like it was just more exponentially more grinding they higher you went. I tend to shy away from all grinders these days.

    - The game is not meant to be rushed through. If you have played WoW and liked the pace of leveling in that game, you will most likely find FFXI too slow. However. if you are looking for less of an MMO lite experience, the pacing of this game may not bother you one bit.

    - Your storage can be upgraded. Granted, the quests to get the increased storage require semi-rare items. But it's doable.

    - Yes, you will find that sometimes you fight mobs that look the same as they did a few 10 levels ago. However, the game has a wide variety of mob types that you can encouner. The reason for fighting the same types of mobs is it is usually the safest/fastest route to Lv75. The new expansion has (at least) 2 new beastmen races and 4 or 5 different mob types planned. Along with the different Dynamis' and Promys there are lots of mobs. You just need to get to a certain level to fight them.

    - Static parties are great. If you can't find one, start your own parties. I usually find the people who have the "it takes forever to party" gripe have not tried to start their own. Not in all cases, just in most.

    - US/Japanese players don't have some hidden rivalry. There are idiots living in all parts of the world. And some of them happen to play FFXI. It is just something you may encounter once in a blue moon.

    - Your account can be reactivated within 90 days. Also if your character is more than 90 days old there are ways to get them back.

    - FFXI has one of the more involved combat systems. Different jobs work together and coordinate attacks to increase damage to mobs. Melee/magic jobs have all have to time their skills for maximum effect. Once you get the hang of it and set some macros, however, it becomes pretty standard.

    - The job system, while it takes time is quite cool. For certain (not all) classes, you have a variety of subjobs you can choose which greatly change your role in a group. You might find that you have multiple subjobs prepared for just the right situation so you are not a one trick pony. Like I said though...takes time as you have to level each job individually.

    - Economy is all over the place. Inflation is crazy on some servers. Unfortunately I don't have a list. Money making requires time. If you are the type that must have all the best uber super gear, prepare to spend some time on it.

    - Travel times are quite long. Up until you get an airship pass at Rank 5 you ride your Chocobo around. While it is faster than running on foot, the size of the various zones can make certain trips a snooze. White Mage teleports and Chocos are your friends.

All in all FFXI is a very deep game. The fighting/crafting/fishing/just about everything has its own intricate details. If you are an impatient gamer, might be wise to skip it. If you like to work for what you have and don't mind investing time for rewards, give it a shot. For the record, no I'm not an FFXI fanboy, I don't play the game anymore. Then again, I don't play anything at the moment. Just my honest opinion.

Kash summed it up perfectly. I loved FFXI I would still be playing it now if not for the grind, and forced leveling. If it provided as much Solo content as it did for Groups and Raids. Eased the XP requirements alot then I would go back. Even if it meant starting from level 1 again. To me the game was great. I just couldn't handle the grind. Mainly because I had already been playing games like Lineage 2 and Everquest. Not to mention a few foreign MMO's (Like RO). They all burnt me out on grinds. Probably Lineage 2 the most as before I quit playing seriously. I had just got to 58 with Gladiator.

If FFXI had come out before those. I can gurantee even with the heavy group requirements and grinding. I'd still be playing to this day. Because on many levels the game is alot better then alot of the other MMO's we play now. As it is one of the first MMO's to actually focus on having a story in game. Unlike alot of these other MMO's where you have to log off and go to a website to find out the backstory of the game. In FFXI you will be living the story.

    In War - Victory.
    In Peace - Vigilance.
    In Death - Sacrifice.

While I somewhat agree with you annoyances about the game, lowrads, I do have to point out that, if you cancel your character's ID (I forget the term) then you don't lose your account.  You just don't have to pay the $15/mo.  It's if you cancel your POL account (which controls all your access to FFXI/etc.) that will cause the cancellation of the CD key.  I still have POL installed cause some of my friends still send me email through the system (and it's free of charge to keep on my comp).

Also, to the next to last previous poster, you said something about having a way to get characters back?  I'm curious to know how, in case I decide to start playing when Treasures comes out.

Not guaranteed, but if you call the support number for POL they may be able to restore the Content ID. They were running a campaign thingy where you could do it online, but you'd have to check the POL website to see if that's still running. Last time I was there, it was not active. Best bet, call em.

Does deleteing the PlayOnline stuff from your computer cancel the CD Key? If so I think I'm screwed::::16::

I haven't played for at least a few months so I doubt my character is still there. Do I need to buy another cd in order to play now?

I might add that I never actually payed a monthly fee yet. I stopped playing after my free trial was up, and haven't played since. Does that affect it any?

Reinstall PlayOnline on your computer. If you still have your old CD-Keys, you can still play. If you lost your CD-Keys, you can get them again as long as you filled out the billing information part and a Squeenix rep can get them restored for you - my friend had to call PlayOnline because he uninstalled it and lost his CD-Keys but he managed to get playing again without having to rebuy the CDs.
