Validation of my opinion through Youtube personality's??

sludgebeardsludgebeard Member RarePosts: 788

The idea going into this post is that several notable Youtube personality's have stopped playing ESO, out of a dislike of core features, direction of ES lineage through the game, and our upset with content being put behind a pay-wall.

Each of them has valid points for disliking ESO, I am not here to argue that. What I am here to argue is the idea that certain posters need Validation of their opinions through these specific personalitys, and why that is logically speaking a poor way to judge a game.

These personality's literally make a living off content, and not nessecarily creative content, more or less they are being paid to "Play and Review a game". They arent being paid to come up with interesting ways to play a game, they are here to show us what an average play through looks like in a game, in this case ESO.

To me that speaks volumes of what other people try to do, which is use their opinions to validate their own opinions on something they are SEEING and not EXPERIANCING.

Why is this an issue? Because Experiance is something completely different from observation, sure you can watch the Angry Joe videos and decide you dont like ESO, theres nothing wrong with that.

But its illogical to think you would have the exact same experiance as Joe, had you played the game yourself. You would be making choices, figuring things out in your own unique way, and most importantly be getting a direct experiance with the game itself.

You wouldnt need to post what Joe says, or Yahtzee, or Francis, because you would have an opinion formulated on something far more personal, something removed more from what is honestly a singular or groups opinion based on their limited time with a game.

ESO may not be the worst game ever, or even the most un-original. But do you really think Joe or any other youtubers have the time to play a game that isnt pulling them subscribers like mad from watching the playthroughs?

Im not trying to imply that their continued time in ESO is based on viewer count alone, Im just saying its much easier for them to dismiss a game that lacks in several areas rather than trying to have a unique, fun experiance within the game itself and instead put up a low-scoring review and call it a day.

In other words, there's no need to look for validation from youtuber's, they provide you a singular, average experiance, lacking in creativity, or attempts to make thgame more enjoyable than what it is beyond the core content. Theres plenty to do in ESO that isnt just based around strictly grinding and raiding PVP.

Not making fun of you but merely pointing out that it's spelled "personalities"

People should always decide for themselves.  however, I've learned that if there is a perception by the playerbase that the game "is not good" based on these "external sources" they are likely to leave the game shortly afterward.

It's sad, but negative publicity is like a fast rolling snowball launched from a top of the hill.   Regardless of how much you try to not listen to people around you, it still affects a lot of people.

I got nothing against Eso, I hope enough loyal fans love it to stay and pay teh sub so that the game has a long and prosperous life, however, that really does depend on how much money they were expecting to get from the game and from the monthly subs.  If they don't meet that expectation.. this game will likely be just like SWTOR....

That's not necessarily a bad thing, since SWTOR has done financially VERY well since changing to F2P model. However, that means you're going to get a lot more cash shop items introduced and a completely changing of the current model. I think a lot of ESO fans will leave because of that, not because they don't enjoy the game.

I think ESO is hampered by the weight of unattainable expectations.....

I completelly agree with you a hands on opinion  is the only way to make a good decison on whether the game is right for you.

I wouldnt even say they give an average view, they give a "Im paid to be negative and rip the game aprt view to rack up the hits.

Any graphical, audio, or gameplay restrictions not seen in other mmos but found in FFXIV can be blamed on one thing.

I respect other peoples opinions. I also only pay attention to those that I feel mirror my own preferences and nuances about games. With that being said, I still don't understand the idea that people have around here that if I agree with a youtube personality that I am somehow unable to form my own opinions or that they are validating my opinion. If I listened to the critics then I never would have bought and played ESO for example. But I did and in hindsight I should have listened to them because my experiences, while my own, seem to coincide with them.

Its just a game review, which is a tool in order to guess if you will or won't like something.  If you can find a reviewer who has similar tastes then you are in good shape.  Of course it doesn't mean that you will have the same experience.  For me personally I don't like MMO PVP, so instead of being a 5/10 as it was for AJ, it would be closer to a 4/10.  If I don't like in game PVE then I will hate a game.

The one fallacy I have to all of this is... that what people think, and even those with access to a larger audience... actually matters.

The simple reason is that this genre, the mmorpg, relies on the masses. People a multitude of players it cannot function or rather it wont function in a way that the publisher and developer want. If they deem its not worth it, if the numbers are to low, the life line gets cut.

This is not something single player games experience. Single player titles can appeal to 1 person and be hated by the rest, and it wouldnt matter for that 1 person because they still have access to it. Massively multiplayer titles dont have that luxury and if the trend is that subs are dropping, and the perception is going "south" then theres a pattern that follows. Validation matters because thats where the trend is, its where the life line is. Again, only for this genre.
