After World of Warcraft and Everquest 2 have been out for over a year, im curious to see which one offers more from someone who has played both games to the max level. Ive only made it to 35 on EQ2, and have two level 50's on WoW. Currently I am subscribed with WoW and am playing a 50 Warrior who will soon be 60 (hopefully). Each game I have probably played 6 months worth, on and off.
In MMORPG's I think end game content is what you should look for, but its always hard to find out this information if you do not have a high level on the game. I know what all the instances are like after talking to people and wathcing videos of WoW, but I dont really see anything else it has to offer. Other then instances and PvP there really isnt nothing to do. WoW is really starting to feel like a huge waste of time.
In EQ2 I never got high enough to even know what the end game instances were, but it didn't really seem like there were many. Other then end game stuff, there is housing, writs, PvP arenas, etc. It seems like there is more to do in the game over all, but maybe not at the max level. The tedious leveling really turned me off, but it did seem fun along the way, discovering and meeting new people.
So which one offers more overall? I don't mean which one has more mounts or which one has better graphics, I really just want to see which one has the most content end game, and which one seems like it will keep advancing in the future?
Blizzard seems to offer content at an extremely slow pace, while I always see new patches in EQ2. Blizzard can't keep their servers up worth shit, at least not for my RPPVP server. I never really experienced server down times on EQ2.
Community wise it seems like WoW players were more active outside of the game. I constantly saw guides, screenshots, videos, and just overall more activity.
So if there is any higher level players from either games that want to comment, that would be helpful. Right now my server is down on WoW so there is nothing better to do.

or one can go for a game that doesnt even have endgame content like DAOC that keeps it fun for a long time due to great PvP.
seriously endgame content is a terrible idea in my mind.

I do prefer Pvp over anything else, but I still like the idea of raiding and getting good drops to advance your character.
DAoC does have endgame content. Its in the form of its PvP and RvR which is an endgame upon itself.
Endgame is one of, if not the most, important thing for a mmorpg. MMO's are supposed to attract a crowd for months/years. They are designed for longevity. Otherwise, after 3-6 months the original fanbase will just move on to something else. Endgame also applies to everything you can do in a mmorpg besides leveling/grinding.
If, after people maxed out their chars there is nothing to do then whats the point of staying in the game? Hence why you would want to have other activites for them to partake in. Whether its crafting, tons of raids, quests for high end players, PvP, wars to partake in, or whatever else someone might fancy.
bump
It's funny I was having a discussion about this very same subject this weekend. I'm not high level in EQ2, but it seems I hear people complain more about the end game of WoW, then the end game of EQ2.
Well to me it seems there is more end game in WoW, except is boring end game stuff that they keep making more of.
End game content in WoW horrified me. You had 2 choices end game.
1. Collect epic gear via PvE.
2. Collect epic gear via PvP.
Well, I tried both out. The PvE aspect was bad, almost all boss fights were the same. Now I know I will be ridiculed for saying such, but I really believed so. Main-tank, off-tank, put DPS in certain spots at certain times. I completed all of the first major end game instance (Molten Core) and most of Black Wing Lair. I quit the game right before The Gates of Ahn'Qiraj were released. I've never been in a single guild not full of BS drama, and such.
Epic PvE gear is horrible in PvP compared to epic PvP gear and vice versa.
PvP was also a pain. It took a friend of mine literally 3 months of playing for at least 8 hours a day to reach Grand Marshall, the highest alliance rank at which you gain your weapon, if he were to slack up one or two days he would lose double the amount of time he slacked off.
Of course, if you PvPd you would get the best weapons.
My main issue with WoW endgame content was that I never got that adrenaline rush from big bosses that games usually gave me. I chose WoW for PvP because EQ2 didn't have any. Instead I got lame zerg PvP, not anywhere near as good as DAoC's, and a worse raiding system.
How is EQ2 for high end bosses? Is there a rush? Does everyone work together? I know the game looks a lot less disney.
In WoW I played to 60 several times over in and eventually became the #1 ranked pvper on Azjol-Nerub after they first put pvp rewards into the game.. but I quickly got burned out after about 1.5 months of PvP (which was really just honor point farming/grinding at the time) and quit. WoW really is not a long-term game, its the kind of thing you can play for a few months and do everything there is to do, then move on.
EQ2.. I got several characters to 50, but the absence of PvP left little else to do in the game. Why spend hours & hours raiding just to have better weapons to kill mobs with? Then again, I notice they have now raised the level cap to 60, and soon to 70 with a upcoming expansion.. and that they also plan to add real PvP to the game, so if you take that into consideration, EQ2 actually has more potential than WoW in terms of an end game.
ya but i think he means endgame a bit more literally then me or you do.
me and you i think are implying the last section of the game that can go on for a endless amount of time dependent on how much you like RvR and such.
i think he means the end as in a more definitive end. like WoW has.....
and dont say WoW doesnt have an end because of its BG's which are at best shallow.....
its nothing to DAOC pvp or RvR......

Well I hit 50 tonight and ran sunken temple, it was fun but I did see how it was similar to any other instances, just different layout and mobs.
I downloaded DAoC trail and its done now, Ill try it out tommorow. I used to have a 30 skald along time ago then I deleted it so I could play Albion on that server (I was a dumbass). So Im not sure how much content I will be able to see in 14 days.
I still will hit 60 and run some end game stuff and see how it is, but Im not expecting much.
I left WOW as soon as I read pvp is coming to EQ2. I played EQ1 for two years and had enough playing time enough to max out multiple characters... In that time the highest level I attained was 55 (back when the cap was 60) mainly because all I did was PVP. If a mob ran in to me that was the measly xp I would earn and eventually level up.
I could have played PVP seemingly forever... There was no "end game". There was pvp and that was it. I ended up leaving because the pvp server I was on was empty and DAOC had come out but if was still filled with players I would probably still be playing to this day.
EQ2 has it's share of problems but from what I have seen there is way more to it than WOW. I am sure we will not see item loot when the pvp servers come out but that is ok... Wow doesn't have them either and the pvp in wow is so shallow I couldn't see myself playing it for long.
Honestly I don't know if EQ2 pvp will be anything close to what I am looking for but after playing EQ2 now for a couple weeks I am very impressed. I am definitely enjoying it more than WOW and could myself playing it far longer.
It got a bad rap and probably deservedly so but it is definitely better than when it came out! ( I beta tested it up till release). Glad I gave it a chance.
Have no fear, Xru is here.
Well if its pvp you want i not recommend EQ2.
However,if its pve then it has so much end game content you will never see them all and if you even come close new stuff is added all the time.
Sad you stopped playing at 35 with the view there was little end game content when the opposite is true.
Sorry got side tracked in my above post...
End game content for me can't just be more of the same (ie. get new item so you can kill new X mob better... ad nauseum)... Theres no more levelling now but instead you spend hours upon hours trying to get a new item and then start all over trying to get the next. This is what most games offer as "end game". Why build your character up for this? If the gameplay is fun that in itself can be a reason in itself I admit but unfortunately that is not what most end games offer... More along the line of bragging rights if you ask me (along with the social aspect of the guild).
For me though, for a game to truly be worth putting in all those hours levelling and amassing items there has to be a reason OTHER than just to be able to kill stronger mobs for more items. Some sort of nation building (ie. Shadowbane though it was poorly implemented) or PvP. Pvp offers competition (so many people see it as ganking only unfortunately) between players which no AI mob ever could. If done right it should be more challenging, more fun and more rewarding ... win or lose.
This drives a reason to continue amassing items and building your strength and to continue playing. Eventually all games must "end" for a player admittedly but hopefully it is because a new improved game has come out not because there is nothing left to do.
