EVE Online: Starbuck (Katie Sackhoff) Joins EVE Valkyrie

BillMurphyBillMurphy Former Managing EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 4,565

Katie Sackhoff, famous for her portrayal of Starbuck in the recent Battlestar Galactica series, is suiting up to play the starring role in CCP's upcoming multiplayer space dogfighter that utilizes Oculus and Sony Morpheus VR technology.

EVE: Valkyrie is a multiplayer spaceship dogfighting shooter set in the EVE Universe currently in development for VR headsets “Project Morpheus” on PlayStation 4 and Oculus Rift on PC. The game uses VR technology to give players the experience of being an actual pilot in an EVE space fighter and is being developed by the company’s Newcastle, UK studio.

“The first time I played EVE: Valkyrie I immediately knew I had to be a part of it,” said Sackhoff. “Even with the roles I have played, it is the closest I have ever felt to being a real spaceship pilot. It is a truly transformative video game experience.”

I loved BSG, but the whole VR thing doesn't appeal to me much. Maybe it's a lot better than I imagine it to be. My last experience with a "VR" headset was a Virtual Boy lol. It's really hard to get an impression of what it's like by reading about it. My frame of reference is technology that came out in the '90s.

I know I just said that it's hard to get an impression by reading about it, but I'd like to hear from anyone who has hands-on experience with the Oculus Rift.

Watch videos of people using it. When people actually get scared and sick from riding a virtual roller coaster, it's a good thing.

I've played it at shows, and this game alone is enough to make me believe the VR hype. Game is going to be incredible.

I doubt we'll see OR or any other such devices take off in a massive way. They'll likely be priced out of the lower end of the market, and be somewhat of a niche, high-priced item for "hardcore" gamers. A friend of mine had some time with one at some random expo he went to, as a professional, and said that it was fairly impressive visually and interactively but that it gave him a pounding headache and was generally quite weighty and uncomfortable to wear.

As to CCP and Valkyrie: another moronic investment by a studio that more and more seems less like a game development company and more like a glorified R+D outfit.

Who is going where?  I've heard of EVE Online, but I don't know any of the other news bits to force them into something that is even relevant.

Good for this person and the community that's getting them.... I think....

I still love her in the Big Bang episode with George Takei when she asked him "how would you know ?"

  • Po_ggPo_gg Member EpicPosts: 5,749

Yep, she's awesome (even in craps like the last Riddick :) ). At first it seemed a bit strange idea to respecc Starbuck into a girl, but it turned out great.

Btw, she's using Katee instead of Katie.

Think your stretching the definition of "Recent"...

Is this a real game or one that they'll just talk about for years and then cancel ?

dude, "being inside a game" is now a reality, not a cheap marketing slogan anymore

This is a real game, like DUST. They'll spend a ton of money on creating it, nobody will play it, and they'll spend the next few years wasting money trying to make it profitable.

Then they'll fire the people who worked on it so they can use the money to build a monument to make themselves feel better.

Dog fighting in space, even the concept is hilarious.  Just like WoD, CCP should deep six this game fast before it ruins their reputation.

Ummmm there are numerous space sims and that is the whole concept of Star Citizen's combat.  Hilarious concept indeed...

The question will be is how Star Citizen will affect the market for Valkyrie which Star Citizen has the Wind Commander creator legend behind the helm so I think Valkyrie's future is pretty bleak especially with all the features Star Citizen is bringing to the table and doubt VR will sway the reception much.

The ultimate evolution of this game will be when it becomes fully integrated into EVE-Online.

Imagine clone-jumping into a fleet carrier, putting on your VR headset and then launching a fighter from the carrier...

I've been playing Eve since 2007 and I totally agree with you.

CCP have a history of failures since 2008 (DUST 514 and WoD).

I don't think Valkyrie will be as good as Elite: Dangerous, which will  be released first.

CCP are up against a legend - David Braben. I'm a realist - I don't think this is a war that CCP can win.

CCP should have just concentrated on Eve Online and made it the best game it can possibly be. That game is their strong point, and I think they have wasted their chance - that boat has already sailed in 2008.

    Sadly it wont work.

For a good FPS game you need a decent server tick rate.

EVE-Online has a server tick rate of 1

In comparison BF4 uses a server tick rate of 10, this is also a low number due to the cross-platform nature of the game

In comparison again, Counter Strike Servers can be set to run with a tick rate of 33, 66 or 100

with 66 or 100 rates giving a much better player experience.

As a stand alone game set within the eve universe Valkyrie has good potential

but technology restraints will force it into the stand alone role.
